The standout chefs from the week’s heats battle it out again in the quarter-final. The stakes are higher, the challenges more demanding, and the judges’ expectations are greater than ever.
It’s quarter-final time again as the standout chefs from this week’s heats come together for another battle in the kitchen. The stakes are higher, the challenges more demanding, and the judges’ expectations are greater than ever.
First up is the invention test, where the chefs must make a surprise ingredient the star of the show. This time, it’s saffron, one of the world’s most-prized spices, renowned for its distinctive aroma, delicate floral notes and rich golden hue. But its extraordinary character comes with a challenge. Too little and its subtle flavour can disappear, but too much or poorly handled and it can overwhelm a dish with bitterness. The chefs must find the perfect balance, using their creativity and instinct to showcase saffron at its best. With just 70 minutes to cook and serve, can they transform this precious ingredient into something truly exceptional?
Next, the chefs face one of their toughest tests yet, cooking a two-course menu for three of the country’s leading food writers and critics, Leyla Kazim, Xanthe Clay and David Ellis. These seasoned critics know what separates a competent chef from a potential star, and this is a chance for the competitors to demonstrate the depth of their talent, with dishes that combine outstanding flavour, technical skill and individuality.
Taking the critics’ feedback into account, Marcus and Monica must now decide who has done enough to secure a place in knockout week. With the competition entering its most demanding phase, only the chefs who consistently deliver at the highest level will remain in the race for the coveted crown.
