Vaughan Williams - Dives and Lazarus

Sara Mohr-Pietsch maps a musical route to Ralph Vaughan Williams' orchestral setting of the English folk song Dives and Lazarus.

Sara Mohr-Pietsch maps a musical route to Ralph Vaughan Williams' orchestral setting of the English folk song Dives and Lazarus. On the way, we hear other settings of the same tune that Vaughan Williams made and music that influenced him, with pieces by Richard Wagner and Maurice Ravel. There's music by Vaughan Williams' film collaborator Doreen Carwithen, plus folk song settings down ages, from Guillaume Dufay in the fifteenth century to John Coltrane in the twentieth.
