How can you look after your amazing lungs?

Chris and Xand explore the remarkable science of the lungs. How do they work, what affects their health, and how can we protect them throughout our lives?

Welcome to What's Up Docs?, the podcast where doctors and identical twins Chris and Xand van Tulleken explore the ideas shaping our health and wellbeing.

In this episode, recorded live at Crossed Wires Festival in Sheffield, they are joined by Professor Robin Condliffe, Consultant Respiratory Physician at Royal Hallamshire Hospital.

Together, they explore the extraordinary science of the lungs. From the moment we take a breath, our lungs are working constantly to deliver oxygen to every part of the body. But how do they do it, and why are they so vulnerable to disease?
Robin explains how the lungs work, how they interact with the rest of the body, and what happens when things go wrong. From asthma, COPD and respiratory infections to lung cancer, they examine some of the most common lung conditions, the symptoms to look out for, and when it's time to seek medical help.
They also discuss how air quality affects lung health and explore the latest advances in respiratory medicine. Finally, they ask what we can all do to keep our lungs healthy for longer.
