3pm Building a Library. Jonathan Cross surveys recordings of Manuel de Falla's ballet The Three-Cornered Hat, and makes a top recommendation.
Commissioned by Sergei Diaghilev for his Ballets Russes, Falla's ballet premiered in 1919. The story, based on a novel by Pedro Antonio de Alarcón, is about a magistrate infatuated with a miller's faithful wife, whom he attempts to seduce. Falla's deeply evocative music brims with unmistakeably Spanish dance idioms.

Top choice:
Philharmonia Orchestra
Yan Pascal Tortelier (conductor)
Chandos CHAN8904
