Chick Young
A portrait of journalist Chick Young, through print and radio to national TV fame, with contributions from Hazel Irvine, Graeme Souness, Jonathan Watson and others.
A portrait of journalist Chick Young, who for more than five decades, has been a familiar voice and face in Scottish football.
We chart the full arc of his life and career, from his upbringing in Glasgow, where a love of the game first took hold, to the classroom decision to study typing and shorthand that quietly set him on the path to sports journalism.
Through newspaper offices, Radio Clyde and BBC Scotland, we follow Chick’s rise from copy boy to national broadcaster, a reporter who built close relationships with the game’s biggest names while earning a reputation for sharp questions and sharper humour. We revisit his defining moments: covering Scotland abroad, cultivating enduring bonds with managers and players, and unexpectedly becoming part of popular culture as Chico on the comedy sketch series Only an Excuse.
His life was changed forever by the tragic death of his son Keith, and here he speaks candidly about his grief and how he eventually returned to the game he loved.
With contributions from Tam Cowan, Tony Roper, Phil Differ, Hazel Irvine, Rob MacLean, Martin O’Neill, Graeme Souness and others, this is a portrait of a broadcaster shaped by football, loss, loyalty and the relationships that have defined his life and career.
