Drought and famine drive Wang Lung and his family from their farm, and in the city they are reduced to begging and pulling rickshaws to survive. A workers' riot offers them an unexpected chance to return home, where, working the land once more, their fortunes steadily rise. But prosperity awakens desires Wang Lung has never had to reckon with, and he becomes consumed by his obsession with a concubine, Lotus.
