It is a year since Lazarus Chakwera became president of Malawi, one of the poorest countries in the world. The preacher turned politician won power promising to create a million jobs and clear the rubble of corruption. But a year on, the economy is being hit hard by the effects of Covid-19, his government admits it has no idea how many jobs have been created and he has been criticised for nepotism. He is about to take on the presidency of the Southern African Development Community but can Malawi's president even honour the promises he made to his own country?
