To mark the death of Sir Peter Hall, HARDtalk takes another look at an interview with him from 2009. Stephen Sackur talks to the theatre director- a hugely influential figure in the performing arts for more than fifty years. As artistic director of the Royal Shakespeare Company and then of the National Theatre, he championed state funding for the arts, but with the economic hard times came tough questions: were taxpayer subsidies necessary to foster creative excellence?
