Ladysmith Black Mambazo

Ladysmith Black Mambazo

As the group return to Oxford a year on we interview band member Albert Mazibuko before their gig at the New Theatre (Sunday 4th of June).

Nearly twenty years ago Paul Simon took a trip to South Africa and met Ladysmith Black Mambazo in a recording studio in Johannesburg. He was captivated by their sound and incorporated much of its traditions into his seminal "Graceland" album which helped bring the spotlight of the stirring music of Black South Africa onto the World Stage.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo were actually formed back in 1960. The type of music sung by the group is called ‘Isicathamamiya’ and originated in the South African mines. As such the band represent more than just great music and immense talent - they were handpicked to sing at President Mandela's inauguration for a start. New South Africa embraces them whilst they embody the traditions suppressed in the old South Africa. In short, they are a National Treasure.

Their new album "Long Walk To Freedom" was released earlier this year and features guest vocals from the likes of Melissa Etheridge, Emmylou Harris, Sarah McLachlan and Zap Mama plus many acclaimed South African artists.

Danny Cox caught up with Albert Mazibuko before the group’s Sunday 4th of June gig at the New Theatre, Oxford.
