Meet 'Mountain Queen' and 'Everest Man' as they break Everest records

- Published
For most people, climbing the tallest mountain in the world would be a once in a lifetime achievement - even if you didn't reach the top.
But for two of Everest's mountain guides it's such a regular trip, they've both broken world records for the amount of climbs they've completed.
Lhakpa Sherpa who is known as 'Mountain Queen' has broken her own record for the most times a female climber has reached the summit after scaling it for the 11th time.
Meanwhile 'Everest Man' - whose real name is Kami Rita Sherpa - also broke his own record after climbing the 8,849m for the 32nd time.

How tall is Mount Everest?

At the top of mountain, it's very cold and capped with snow all year round. Around 800 people from around the world attempt to climb it every year
Mount Everest sits on the border of Nepal and China. The summit is believed to be the highest place in the whole world.
Until 2020, Nepal and China's authorities couldn't agree on how tall the mountain is.
It's now agreed that it's 8,848.86 metres (29,031 ft) tall - that's around the height at which passenger planes fly.
Mount Everest is thought to rise about 40cm every 100 years, so it will continue to get bigger, but very slowly.
How long does it take to climb Mount Everest?

You need lots of specialist equipment to get to the top including ice axes and boots with crampons (sharp spikes)
It can take 10 weeks for a trained climber to make it to the top of Mount Everest and they must go through rigorous training first.
The climb was first attempted by the British in 1921, but the first successful climb wasn't for another 30 years.
In 1953, the team of climber Edmund Hillary from New Zealand and Nepalese Sherpa Tenzing Norgay became the first to reach the summit of Everest.
Highest or tallest?

Mauna Kea is taller, but a big share of its height is under the Pacific Ocean
While Mount Everest claims to be the highest peak on Earth, is it the tallest mountain?
Well, from base to peak Mauna Kea, a volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii, is taller.
Mauna Kea sits on the floor of the Pacific Ocean, but there is also some debate as to exactly where the base sits down there.
However, according to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) its total height from base to peak over is 10,210 metres (33,500 ft), making it the 'tallest'.
