The ceremony started with a spectacular stunt, as American Aaron "Wheelz" Fotheringham, hurtled down a massive ramp in a wheelchair and performed a back flip through a giant ring.

The Brazilian flag is raised as musician Carlos Martin, who does not have full use of his right hand, played the national anthem on the piano.

The parade of nations starts. The first 'nation' out is the Independent Paralympic Athletes, led by Syrian refugee Ibrahim Al Hussein. Each nation carried a jigsaw piece. On one side was the country's name, on the other an image of all the athletes taking part.

Equestrian rider Lee Pearson, who has won 10 gold medals, led Great Britain out and said: "That was one of the most amazing experiences of my entire life. I am a proud Brit and I'm even more proud now after leading the ParalympicsGB athletes out."

Finally the flame was lit despite heavy rain and the crowd went wild. The flame being lit marked the official beginning of the 2016 Rio Paralympics - let the Games begin!
