Fallout from abuse report

Their cries for help were not listened to at the time, but now victims of abuse in Catholic run orphanages and industrial schools have inundated helplines set up to listen to their stories.

Wednesday's report from an inquiry into the abuse once again highlighted the horror inflicted on children for decades.

Described in the Dáil as the darkest chapters" in Irish history, the Republic's government is to meet in special session to discuss the report's recommendations.

Even though the inquiry's remit was south of the border, its revelations are a reminder of the physical and sexual torture of children in similar circumstances here.

Our Dublin correspondent Shane Harrison has the latest on the fallout from the report and the anger that its findings will not be used for criminal prosecutions.

His report contains some flash photography.
