Long-suffering residents in Norbury can finally breathe a sigh of relief. After having to put up with intimidation, antisocial behaviour and living in fear, Magistrates granted the authorities closure order to have the property in Newlands Road, which had been used to sell Class A drugs shut down.

The court heard that the tenant had loud parties on a weekly basis, and had gangs gathering outside the property on a nightly basis. Neighbours were forced to avoid walking past the property as they faced intimidation not only by the tenant but the visitors.

In July a joint operation began when local police and the council’s antisocial behaviour enforcement team swooped on the flat and uncovered traces of crack cocaine and drugs paraphernalia including electronic scales, crack pipes and burnt foil.

Upon hearing the overwhelming evidence (including statements read out from local residents) magistrates granted a full three month closure order.

Councillor Dudley Mead, said: “This is an excellent result by the council and Croydon police - a real partnership effort. I would like to praise all the residents who provided evidence to help us put a stop to this illegal activity”.

“We have zero tolerance towards drug dealing taking place in our properties and we will always take the strongest form of action against the perpetrators."

The council has now begun proceedings to claim back the property.
