Number One Project

Liverpool musical stars past and present team up to cover songs for a special album and concert for 2008.

Atomic Kitten

Atomic Kitten will release Anyone Who Had A Heart

Atomic Kitten and Elvis Costello are amongst the Liverpool pop legends who have come together for a unique musical project.

The Number One Project will see more than 20 acts from Liverpool's music scene past and present record their own versions of songs made famous by Liverpool artists.

The recordings will form an album Covers and Collaborations which will be released at the beginning of Liverpool's year as European Capital of Culture.

All proceeds from the project will go to local charities including the Radio Merseyside Charitable Trust.

A single, Atomic Kitten's version of Cilla Black's 'Anyone Who Had A Heart', will be released on 21 January, 2008 in a bid to take the number one slot in the charts, and add to Liverpool's 57 number ones.

Elvis Costello

Elvis Costello will record Little Children

"This is the perfect reason for the girls to have some fun together, we love the song and the idea of celebrating our city's year as Capital of Culture while raising money is too good to miss," says Atomic Kitten's Natasha Hamilton.

"We're proud our third number one gave Liverpool its world leading status and we're going to do our best to add to that in the future."

On 19 January, two days before the single's release, a line up of Liverpool music legends will perform at a concert at the Liverpool Echo Arena.

Artists confirmed for the album include Elvis Costello who will record a version of Billy J Kramer's hit Little Children and The Real Thing who will cover The Beatles track Eleanor Rigby.

Beginning when Lita Roza took the number one spot in 1953 with How Much Is That Doggie in the Window?, Liverpool artists have had 57 number one records. The last number one was Atomic Kitten's The Tide is High in 2002.
