Operator Please

Operator Please @ Barfly

Operator Please are the new young pups on the indie ciruit. This (mostly) female band received an extremely warm welcome from the fifty or so strong crowd at Barfly. Nina Finlay was there.

How refreshing to see an almost all-female band. With the exception of a male drummer and bass player, the band are made up of a female keyboard player, lead singer/guitarist and violinist. Operator Please are a up and coming product of Australia and are about to begin the NME ‘new bands’ tour.

"mesmerised by the sheer standard of good music"

Nina Finlay

Operator Please took to the stage with confidence, though not in a cocky way. They received an extremely warm welcome from the fifty or so strong crowd, including a gang of hyper-active, jumping, testosterone fuelled teenagers covered in neon headbands and bracelets. Picking up their instruments, I wasn’t expecting the extremely talented young musicians that they clearly are. These Aussie teenagers took me by surprise. Their sound is a mixture of indie/rock with a dash of, dare I say it, pop, thrown in for good measure, not too dissimilar to the `new rave’ we’ve become accustomed to recently.

Mesmerised

These young pups have a cool sound, catchy dancy tunes with a new fresh feel to them. The addition of the violin is the icing on the cake and gives their tunes an edge, something different that seems to be lacking in other up and coming young bands at the moment, 1-0.

The crowd was pleasantly lively, perhaps more mesmerised by the sheer standard of good music they were being treated to and not so much with their image. In every sense of the word, this is what Girl Power should be, their look isn’t exactly conservative, they’re not stick thin, they are what they are, and what they are is damn good.

It would be a shame with such energy and raw talent under their belts if Operator Please don’t get the media attention and constant radio play of the bands that these guys have been supporting, including the Kaiser Chiefs.. it may be a case of too much too soon.

All in all, bravo young Operator Please and move over The Gossip, this one’s definitely one to keep an eye on.
