Dios Salve a la Reina

Dios Salve a la Reina.

God Save The Queen

"The hits they rattled out were tighter than Freddie Mercury's pants!" Can this Queen tribute band really be almost as good as the real thing? Nina Finlay goes ga-ga for God Save The Queen.

Now, as far as tribute bands go, they never really do it for me personally, unless they are absolutely spot on – and I can definitely say that God Save The Queen fell into the right category, or should I say `Dios Salve a la Reina’ as there is a twist to this band, they’re an Argentinian tribute band who’ve recently been receiving a lot of attention due to their fantastic performances.

The Carling Academy was chocka-block on arrival and filled with the sweet smell of nostalgia. I can’t even begin to imagine what an actual Queen gig was like when the frontman was alive, but I haven’t attended such an enjoyable gig in a long time.

"They provide a visual extravaganza coupled with such great music."

Nina Finlay

With a 26 song set, and one of the biggest reputations in music history to contend with, God save the Queen stood up to the challenge. The hits they rattled out were tighter than Freddie Mercury's pants! Their costume and stage presence were uncanny, the only slight difference being that ‘Freddie’ didn’t actually sound exactly like the famous British icon, but he was as near as damn it. He strutted around the stage like a proud peacock, with all the passion and confidence you would expect from the real thing, and with the rest of band donning appropriate wigs and clobber it was a wonderful sight to behold.

Air guitars

Under Pressure, I Want It All and Who Wants to Live Forever were among the first songs. They soon tackled some of the more catchy hits like Radio Gaga and an amazing Bohemian Rhapsody. The crowd was fantastic - there were air guitars (and legs) everywhere. They just couldn’t get enough and when they shouted for more, that’s exactly what they got - not one, but two encores encompassing Champions, God Save the Queen and the grand finale, Don’t, which I especially enjoyed. Of course `We Will Rock You’ got its usual welcome (Dum Dum Ch, Dum Dum Ch) which is always a crowd pleaser no matter who is delivering it.

These doppelgangers are without a doubt worth a trip to see. Their set is long, but never gets tiring. They provide a visual extravaganza coupled with such great music, a fantastic time is bound to be had by all.
