McFly @ Liverpool Empire

By site contributor Marie Wilkinson
The McFly boys return to Liverpool to treat a screaming, mainly female audience to a night of great guitar pop.

The Theatre was buzzing with the crowd eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Fabulous Four. After the Support Acts, the relatively unknown State Warning and the new teenage sensation Lil Chris, the boys from McFLY arrived on stage to the screams and chants of an audience of mainly teenage girls.

From our seats we had a clear view of Tom, Danny, Harry and Dougie as they launched into ‘Friday Night.’ The stage was awash with flashing lights and smoke rose from around Harry’s drum kit. By the time they moved onto ‘Please Please’ the audience were on their feet, singing and dancing. It was a sea of waving arms.

"a fantastic atmosphere, combined with good music made for a brilliant night"

Many of the old favourites from their debut album, ‘Room on the 3rd Floor’ were included, such as the title track and ‘That Girl.’ The 2005 Comic Relief song ‘All About You’ was also in the set list along with the upbeat ‘I’ll Be OK’ from the ‘Wonderland’ album and their forthcoming single ‘Baby’s Coming Back.’

The noise from the crowd could have raised the roof when the immortal Queen classic ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ blasted through the speakers accompanied by thousands of singing fans.

The musical flow was briefly interrupted when Tom’s microphone failed to work at the start of the moving song ‘Bubblewrap’. The main set finished with my personal favourite ‘Obviously’ and the band left the stage.

The audience shouted for more, and we were not disappointed when they came back and performed ‘5 Colours in her hair.’

The concert was a huge success, leaving me and no doubt many of the audience singing during the journey home and looking forward to the next time. Overall, a fantastic atmosphere, combined with good music made for a brilliant night.
