Narrated by Pete Wylie, founder of 80s band The Mighty Wah!, the hour-long guide by Liverpool Culture Company takes music fans through 50 years of world-shaking pop. Wylie takes the listener on a tour of venues, music shops and buildings such as the Cavern Club, The Jacaranda, iconic 70's club Eric's, and present day beacons such as The Zanzibar. Here is a look at some of the stops on the audio tour in the words of Pete Wylie himself: The Cavern/Eric’s"We’re in Mathew Street and Bill Drummond of the KLF reckons there is a ley line running down here. It is pretty incredible that two great clubs, The Cavern and Eric’s, both happened in the same street in a small city. "Eric’s is the most important place in my life, ever. It opened 1 October 1976 and I came as a fan. It closed March 1980 and I played on the last night. I met Julian Cope here, me and Ian McCulloch from the Bunnymen came here." "I know it’s obvious, but at the time of Merseybeat there were a lot of clubs and the Iron Door was a rival of the Cavern. It’s where the Beatles first played as The Silver Beatles in 1960. "To me, this venue will always be Club Zoo which is where we came to know Teardrop Explodes in 1980." The Jacaranda"The Jacaranda was a coffee bar in the late 50’s. Alan Williams, the Beatles first manager (the man who gave the Beatles away), owned it and The Beatles used to come and hang around here, rehearse here and play here. | | The Jacaranda is also on the tour. |
"In exchange for letting them come and sag off college, they painted murals in the basement and you can still see some of Stuart Sutcliffe’s and John Lennon’s paintings downstairs." The Zanzibar"The Zanzibar is the unsung hero of the Liverpool music scene. I think in twenty years time, people will talk about The Zanzibar in the way people talk about The Cavern and Eric’s. "There was a night here run by Gary Bandit called The Bandwagon. The Zutons, The Coral, The Bandits and all the most successful bands from the current era of Liverpool came through here."
