Wrongdezvous was supposedly about the festival in a club and putting the icons of differing music spheres head to head with the entertainment of live performers and circus acts. Hence a line-up bolstered by names like Derrick Carter, The Ramones, Happy Mondays and even Peaches Geldof. Grand designs then for a clubnight, but one which they managed to pull off. Entering the Carling Academy the first thing that strikes you is the diversity. When we stroll in there is the kling and klang of art-rockers Blondelle kicking off in the second room, Chris Lake belting out some lovely techy goodness upstairs and the Trash Pussies car crash mixing records to a visibly amused crowd in the basement. | | "Resident Jemmy in pure cutting edge style" |
Veering from room to room, there’s plenty of opportunity for you to get into one set, but we found out there was more fun to be had wandering around.
The fete market thing going off on the balcony of the main room was hilarious; try hoola-hooping after a few beers and the results are laughable, but at least the lovely Laundrettas were on hand to iron the shirts we had hastily slung on before the evening began. If we want to get into the nitty gritty of which performers shone, then props fall outwards to the angular rhythm of Datarock and the big room funk of Sonny Wharton. Derrick Carter’s boompty bump offering was solid and the Happy Monday’s troupe, with some insane mic mumblings from Bez, brilliant crowd pleasing fodder. Not forgetting resident DJ's Alex Wasikowski opening and resident Jemmy closing the night in pure cutting edge style. But quite simply what we enjoyed the most was the madness of it all, and whilst there was plenty of room to move around in this time expect the word to spread of Liverpool’s freshest evening. Elbow room might be precious in the future, but boy it’ll be fun. |
