YMCA Round Up

By Lozz Rose
A round up of YMCA's football week...

UNDER 11s:
BLACKPOOL RANGERS 0 YMCA 7

In appalling weather conditions and on a difficult pitch at Bispham Gala Field YMCA dominated this game from the start last Sunday. Jack Burton opened the scoring with a long range strike and he notched a further goal minutes later to give YMCA a comfortable 2-0 lead at the break. In the second half YMCA continued to test a resolute Rangers defence and their constant pressure eventually resulted in further goals from Hargreaves, Allen, and three more from the outstanding Burton. Rangers never gave up but YMCA deserved this well earned victory just a few days after clinching a Hogan Cup final place in a 4-1 extra time victory over BJFF.

UNDER 12s:
YMCA 1 BJFF 4

YMCA's five match unbeaten run came to an end against title favourites BJFF at a wet Seafield Road on Sunday but they should remain upbeat after an encouraging team display. They made life difficult for the visitors from the start by preventing their danger men from making an impact and such was YMCA's early dominance it was a shame that they could not capitalise with a goal. They almost took the lead when after some fine work from Jack Hellon on the right wing resulted in the ball being cut back for Jamie Abbey but his effort narrowly went over the bar. BJFF then began to press and they took the lead after YMCA failed to clear from a corner .A further setback came just before half time with another goal for the visitors, again from a corner, which was headed home. In the second half BJFF scored another two further goals to make the game seemingly safe but YMCA notched a reply through Matthew Carlisle when he brilliantly beat two players before slotting the ball past the BJFF keeper. With seven games still to play YMCA can take heart from this performance and hopefully claim more points in the coming weeks. In defence Joe Virco and David Mitchell were excellent throughout.

UNDER 13s:
ST ANNES v YMCA - POSTPONED DUE TO A WATERLOGGED PITCH

UNDER 14s:
YMCA 6 ST ANNES FC 2

YMCA came out on top in a very entertaining and sportingly contested local derby at Seafield Rd last Sunday. They shot into a 2-0 lead inside the opening 10 minutes with two superbly taken goals by James Gardiner. His first was a bullet header from an excellent cross by Chris Barlow and then he fired home after great work by the busy Jack Cronin. Barlow then made it 3-0, bundling the ball home from an exquisite corner from Harry Foley and then Gardiner completed his hat trick to make it 4-0 at half time.
5 minutes after the restart the lethal Gardiner bagged his fourth goal of the game and his 41st of the season to further increase YMCA’s lead. St Annes though, who displayed great spirit throughout, then pulled two goals back but even though the pitch was becoming heavier and more difficult by the minute YMCA still managed to produce some fine flowing football and Max Bradshaw fired home YMCA’s 6th goal after some brilliant play by the impressive Jonathan Brown. Nathan Armstrong, James Pollock, Ashley Jones and ‘keeper Tom Sharples were all notable for YMCA.

UNDER 15s:
FOXHALL v YMCA – POSTPONED DUE TO A WATERLOGGED PITCH

UNDER 17s:
Hogan Cup semi final
YMCA JUNIORS 8 YMCA SENIORS 1

Lancashire Under 16 champions YMCA Juniors proved too strong for their YMCA counterparts at Seafield Rd last Sunday despite being a team a year younger. Luke Andrews gave them an early lead but the Seniors equalised with a superb strike by Callum Chadderton. However Juniors soon regained the lead through Craig Davies and Simon Williams added another shortly afterwards. A thunderous drive by Man of the Match Alex Pickering increased the Seniors lead to 4-1 at half time. After the restart Juniors remained on control and added four further goals. Substitute Johnny Cundliffe weighed-in with two goals, Andrews notched his 2nd of the game and Mattie Hardman capped an impressive midfield display for the Seniors by also finding the target.

UNDER 11 GIRLS:
THORNTON CLEVELEYS 0 YMCA 1

YMCA progressed into the final of the North Valley League Cup with a 1-0 victory last Sunday. YMCA started brightly driven forward by captain Millie Gallagher, they went ahead in the seventh minute with a fine drive from Gallagher. As he half continued YMCA came under pressure and only a fine save from keeper Becky Sullivan kept retained their lead. The second half flowed from end to end with YMCA unable to increase their lead despite a number of clear chances whilst at the other end were denied an equaliser with Sullivan pulling off three more excellent saves .
