Seeking Asylum: A family affair

A candid look at the lives of asylum seekers in our region.

Immigration is currently a hot political topic.

Both public and politicians are deeply divided over the issue. But moving away from the heated headlines; what is the experience of asylum seekers in our area?

Many have come to the UK after fleeing torture and persecution in their countries. The families live in limbo as they await the decision as to whether they will be granted permanent leave to remain.

During this period they are not allowed to work and rely on benefits to survive. Case workers claim that in some cases the money provided leaves families struggling to get by.

Radio Humberside reporter Elecia Thomas has spent time talking to asylum seekers in Hull to produce this exclusive report.
