My Father ,Alfred William Gilbert worked for 'Griffiths Demolition'as a crane driver and worked on various bombed buildings around the country,as I understand this was stressful as they often found bodies,23 Queen Victoria Street 10th May 1941,Holborn Circus 16th April 1941,St Katherines Dock 7th Septmber 1941,Bristol Docks,in freezing weather,(These are the dates of the bombing)
not sure of dates worked on,judging by the pictures published in Front Line 1940-41 The Official story of the CIVIL DEFENCE
must have been very soon after .
My Father was taking the workers wages to them when he was injured in the bank tube disaster and was left for dead, when his 'boss'spotted him aand asked for him to be taken to hospital,he had burns to his face and hands and was treated at Hill End Hospital St Albans which I think is where Airman were taken, when my Mother visited him he was bandaged and just had slit for mouth and eyes,he had skin grafts, this affected him for the rest of his life.As a resolt of this she lost the baby she was carrying.
I have written this in memory of my Father and other demolition workers who as far as I know have not been recognised for the work they did
If anyone knows of anything to do with this story I would like to hear from them.
