A group of German nuns and sisters who ran the domestic side of the camp. The camp was a religious cloister in which mental defectives were cared for before the war. I remember one poor wretch who had been locked up in a gloomy windowless cell for eleven years. We used to peer secretly through a peephole in the door and watch him pace his cell like a caged animal mumbling and burbling to himself. Other inmates were allowed to help in the kitchen or vegetable garden. One particular favourite of ours was a poor creature who used to lope around the camp shouting abuse at us children much to our glee. Most of the inmates had been moved to make way for the internees. Their fate may be imagined.
