7 Dances 7 Days : Salsa

By Hannah Green
I learnt the romantic dance of Salsa on Sunday 3rd September. Easy to pick up, with the ability to turn even the most hesitant man into a sexy dancer, I think every man should be forced to learn to dance Salsa.

It is every girls worst nightmare! You go out clubbing, or to a family party and your date doesn't want to, or can't dance. For a while you dance by yourself, or with your girly mates, but you cannot help feeling guilty that whilst you are enjoying yourself, your date is feeling unhappy and lonely without you.

Well I think I may have just tried the dance that solves this problem!

Sexy Salsa

Salsa dancing requires the man to lead, and the woman to trust her partner. The man suggests a step and the woman agrees to follow. Once you have the basic grasp of the steps any man can lead a woman confidently.

Salsa is easy to pick up

I went along on Sunday 3rd September with a friend, who freely admits that he was not the best dancer in the world.

We attended a beginners class at Que Pasa in Southampton, which started with one on one tuition with an instructor who took us through the basic steps. Most dances run on an eight beat count, salsa stays on this same count but you only step on six steps. One, Two, Three and Five, Six , Seven.

Both of us where forced to count these steps out loud to ensure that we didn't step on each others feet. Once we had mastered that Salsa was pretty easy to pick up.

Two ways of learning

There are two ways of learning salsa, the basic class with an instructor teaching you the steps is great, however it has the slight side effect that the lady generally knows what is coming. Therefore she can sometimes lead which doesn't work for more complicated steps.

The other way for women to learn is to be lead by a more experienced partner. If the man is confident in what he is doing, he can lead the woman in such a way that where she naturally places her feet is the correct foot work.

As well as learning through the first method, I was lead through some of the more complicated steps by one of the instructors. First time he lead me I managed to do it perfectly.

Free Style Salsa

After the hour lesson, the rest of the evening was dedicated to free style salsa dancing. The intermediates and advanced dancers mixed with the beginners to dance to the music.

They really showed me what can be learnt after only a few lessons. As the partnership relies on the man leading the woman, as long as he correctly suggests a step, the woman will follow.

Overall I had a wonderful time, once I let my partner lead me! I would recommend anyone to learn salsa as once you have mastered the basic's it is a fun and sexy dance.
