Friday 4th August | | Team the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. |
Well what a week this has been. If you scroll down you will find my first entry at the beginning of this week. ChampagneYesterday I was honoured to get a press pass to the Ladies Day Champagne reception at Cowes week. My full review is coming shortly, but I had a wonderful time. Before I went to the reception I took some pictures of the tug of war. Owing to the weather the racing had been delayed, so some of the boat teams including last year's winners Bear of Britain had not returned to the marina. Therefore two teams were called from the crowd to take their place, including team "the Good, the Bad and the Ugly". This team went on to beat one of the boat crews but were knocked out in the semi finals by the eventual winners. Dames | | Dame Ellen MacArthur |
The Ladies Day trophy was a glamorous affair, with all the major athletes from the world of sailing in attendance. I did not have a clue who the majority of them where! Thankfully Gemma Farrell and Rachel Howe from team sail4cancer took me under their wing. They pointed out all the important people and made me feel very welcome, this was helped by the support of the BBC South Today sports team. After taking photos of the nominees and the winner Betty Moore, I was privileged to have interviews with all of them. This line up included Dame Ellen MacArthur who gave me a great interview, even though she was tired after a long day of racing and just leaving the event. Listen too the BBC Radio Solent breakfast show to hear my interviews. One of the nominees Kerry Gruson was kind enough to offer to take me sailing on Friday. So check back later this week to read my account of my first ever sailing adventure. Dancers | | Gemma Farrel (left) Rachel Howe(right) and friends |
The reason I originally went to Cowes was to look into the entertainment side of the regatta. There are many acts on offer, providing a wide range of musical entertainment regardless of taste. The best show by far was the African Acrobats who could perform fantastic stunts with no apparent fear. Check out my Cowes Gallery to see what I mean. ShowsAs well as trying sailing for the first time this weekend, I will also be going to my first production at the Mayflower in Southampton. The West End Showcase on Sunday night will bring together west end performers and local Hampshire children into one great show. The children have been participating in a week of workshops to prepare them for this great production. I will be going along on Sunday to conduct a review of the production. So expect lots of interesting articles come Monday. ................................................................................Tuesday 1st AugustWell this is the beginning of my second week working for BBC Hampshire and strange events have occurred. Those of you who are very astute will note that the promised article on Southampton City Gallery has not yet appeared!! Don't worry dear friends, help is at hand , for it has not disappeared but is merely stewing slowly to allow for full flavour and quality when it is eventually published. Courgettes | | The courgette in question |
This week I was fortunate enough to have some extra money left from my food budget (we students must plan for everything don't you know!) So I decided to be a little bit varied and buys something I have never tasted before. I chose an aubergine simply because I liked the colour. Upon hearing this news a very kind and special member of the BBC team ( who wishes to remain anonymous) picked me from his own garden a courgette to go with it! So BBC Hampshire is full of kind generous people who not only aid with the journalist life , but also offer cookery ingredients. PhantomToday has been predominantly spent working on articles for the upcoming weeks. One such is a review of the West End Showcase that is happening this Sunday at the Mayflower theatre in Southampton. There is also the One beat festival on the 12th of august and a dance feature which you will have to wait and see about . The big boss Matthew Price came in today as well. Said he had read the web blog and noticed his name so I thought I would add it again! Cruises | | Cowes Week on the Isle of White |
No unfortunately I am not about to sail off into the sunset. Hopefully I will soon be stepping aboard a cruise ship to see what the life of a sea bound entertainer is like. Since I have lived in Southampton every where I go I see signs telling me about the amazing cruise ships that dock here. So I thought I would try and find out what the fuss is about. CowesFinally the big article and adventure of this week. I have been invited to attend the Ladies Day Champagne Reception on Thursday. This event see's the presentation of the Ladies Day cup and offers me the opportunity to examine the much talked of entertainment. |
