Bestival 2006

The third Bestival took place over three days in the leafy surroundings of the Robin Hill Country Park, with a whole variety of music and random delights to make the festival go with a swing.

This year saw the festival super sized with 11 stages to choose from, all hosting a phenomenal amount of music from bands and djs catering for all tastes from rock and indie to funk, disco and house and everything else in between.

Gogol Bordello

Elsewhere around the site, there was plenty of fun and mayhem to check out. You could boogie as long as your legs could stand it in a vintage big top and if you’d always wanted to be a dancing diva, you could take an expert-led Charleston, swing or lindy-hop lesson.

Or, if you ventured into the Bestivalley you could take your vows in an inflatable church, get closer to your leafy surroundings with a spot of tree climbing, or get your creative juices going by moulding a self portrait out of local clay.

The main stage was obviously the place to be for many over the three days. Flanked by rows of enormous flags billowing in the wind, the stage boasted an eclectic set of bands.

Highlights included Gogol Bordello who, under the light of a silvery moon, got the festival spinning at full tilt on the Friday night when they brought their crazy world of unique gypsy punk tunes and wowed the crowd with their frenetic stage show.

Neil Tennant / Pet Shop Boys

Sandwiched in the middle of the long weekend were disco-pop legends, The Pet Shop boys who put in an incredible show to a striking neon backdrop with Neil Tennant dressed up like a general over-seeing a troop dancers wearing military outfits. They played all their much-loved classics alongside some new material.

And who could forget Saturday’s fancy dress parade? Over 15,000 Besti-goers were transformed and ready for action in a range of random costumes from the Island’s Needles lighthouse to lycra-clad superheroes, cavemen, strongmen and even bearded ladies. You can see them in all their glory in our gallery.

Finally, bringing a huge dollop of glitz and glamour to finish things off on the main stage on the Sunday night were the much-loved Scissor Sisters, who had gone for the festival’s original 'Circus' fancy dress theme and were dressed to the nines as clowns.

As expected they put on a spotless, dazzling show and kept the party in full swing with their monstrously infectious throbbing disco rock.
