Hi:Fi South

The summer festival season opener got underway this Bank Holiday weekend with thousands of people cramming into The Matterley Bowl to party in the great outdoors for the long weekend.

The two day outdoor party got underway on the bank holiday Saturday afternoon with over 20,000 festival goers pulling on their wellies for a weekend of grassy dancefloor action.

The festival was centred around five arenas in the leafy surroundings of The Matterley Bowl and aimed to bring rock and dance acts together.

Saturday's live line-up featured Brighton's Go! Team, psychedelic rockers The Super Furry Animals, Mylo who played a DJ set and headliners Hard-Fi whose mix of rock, dub and disco conquered the most reluctant dancers.

Sunday night saw the legendary Ian Brown in the top slot. He was joined in the live area by laid back duo Lemon Jelly, drum n' bass outfit Kosheen and Isle of Wight funksters The Bees.

For those with an appetite for something electronic, a packed bill of DJs were also manning the decks of four arenas over the weekend covering all genres of dance music.

They included Audio Bullys, Paul Oakenfold, Judge Jules, Pete Tong, Sasha, Shapshifters, Carl Cox, 2Many DJs and local deck wizard, James Zabiela.

Hi:Fi also featured a variety of non-musical entertainment including a full fun fair, market stalls, chill out areas a cinema and powder room where you could be transformed from a bedraggled mess into a festival queen!

A simultaneous one-day event in the north-east of England took place on Saturday 27th May, at the Matfen Estate near Newcastle.

Christian Thompson
Not a bad event. Sound systems poor throghout the whole event which made talking to people easy, but we werent there for that. Unless there is a guarentee of a marked improvement on sound I wont be going next year. Such a disappointment when you pay your £100 + and are let down because you can hear a bloke and his missus having a row instead of twisted basslines and broken beats. SORT IT OUT HIFI, SUCH POTENTIAL AND YOU FAILED TO REALISE IT!!!!!!!

Lauren from winch

The highlight of the festival for me was the drum and bass line up on Saturday night. Anyone who is anyone in drum and bass played and another highlight was Kosheen.

Absolutely amazing line up from D and B to House to Break Beat and a touch of Psytrance for good luck! the weather is poor but with music beer and 1000s of peopole having a good time i am looking forward to a big one!!! Hope everyone enjoys big time. Safe.

Amy Peirce
Think its a fantastic idea - really hoping I can go - love Hard-Fi - and think its about time they got the recognition they deserve Headlining this festival. I know it means alot to them too. Plus, the mixture of music genres is great - I especially am looking forward to the Bands and Drum n Bass arenas. Am'

James
Just won 2 weekend tickets, well chuffed :D The lineup looks AWESOME. Saw Hard-Fi at Brixton last Monday so they have a lot to live up to ;)

Tom, Southampton
Looks a wicked line up with Hard-Fi, Ian Brown and a mix of top name DJ's this is the type of event people have been calling for. Got my ticket

paul buss
nice one, we need something like this to liven it up down here

Dan
The line-up and Homelands was always mediocre. With Oakie, Buuren, Tiesto and Digweed amongst others you have to be crazy to think that this won't be the event of the year!

tsbstratford
new festival new era

tom hicks
for the last 6 years we have been going to homelands but its too short lets hope this new hifi south can pull it off lets hope the security do there job to keep the creeps out selling the drugs

Born2Conform
The musics too different. The crowd that go wont end up seeing any of the bands. And the ticket price is so much more than homelands ever was. BRING BACK HOMELANDS

Jason ThRaves
Bring it on...

Ffion
if this is replaces homelands i will be upset, looks good otherwise.

Ollie Hayman
2many DJ's rock my pants. It's gonna be quality!

stacey newnham

bruce

katie knaapen
i think its great and will be attending . cant wait

Paul J
Always up for new ventures, although stepping over the 'Homelands' territory is a little low. Should be a good w'end though. Nice line-up.

chris
it's a good idea with a bit more variety, jus a shame they had to use the Homelands weekend!

Finn Bruce
It is going to be absoloutley immence!!!!!! cant wait. line up is brilliant!

Marcus
Absosulely brilliant i went to homelands and it is fun and safe. a good time all over

stacey newnham
i think if is all good that they are turning it into a 2 day fest but it is not homelands! Are they still going to have d&b tent? i think they should keep it 2 1 day if its not doing to be homelamds and it probley be better. xxxxx

Darren Lawrence
Sounds great. I went to Global Gathering last year and what was missing were more live acts. Combining Indie and Dance is the way forward. Bring it on...!

Tim Pike
Its good becuase its pretty near to where i live. It would be better if they could get a few more bands there though

Alun
Sounds good, hopefully more big names will be added to the bill. Good news for the South to have a music festival here (I usually go to V in Chelmsford).
