The true story of the Ruth Ellis, the last woman to be hung in the UK, is told in this sombre film that won the Cannes 'Best Picture' award of 1985. Moody and atmospheric, it now debuts on a reasonable UK disc.
Previous VHS outings of this film were pan and scanned, so it's nice to see it in widescreen on DVD. Despite not being anamorphic (a process which carries extra coding to create a more detailed picture on a widescreen TV), the picture is quite clear in daylight scenes. Darker settings do suffer from a little grain but it's not a big problem.
The 2.0 sound mix is mono, but free from any distortion.
Extra features consist of a token photo gallery and a trailer. It's a disc worth buying for the widescreen option if nothing else.
