The Jan De Bont re-make of "The Haunting" does lack tension. The compensation is some very impressive effects. And the DVD reproduces them all to a precision that adds some much-needed terror at close quarters.
For a DVD not overburdened with extra features, four stars may seem a little high. But this is a film that is a challenge to the format and there are some real showcase moments on this disc.
As is common with horror films, the lighting is subdued - hell, even dark! But while we could all play the 'poke holes at the plot' game, there's little faulting the incredible art direction of the movie. It's gothic styling gone mad. And within every frame is a truly impressive level of detail that adds texture to an otherwise paltry movie.
The only other saving grace is the soundtrack. Turn the lights off, take the phone off the hook (you don't want people to know what you're watching now!) and enjoy the aural terror. This is one busy 5.1 track that is geared to make you jump and there are some tasty shocks in store for you.
Included on the disc is a 27-minute 'making of' documentary, hosted by Catherine Zeta Jones. She presides over what is essentially a cheese board of overpowering, gushing comments about the movie. But it's still worth a look for plenty of behind the scenes footage and interviews with the technical staff.
