Disney DVDs have not often been found lacking in quality but extras and interactive elements for the kids were always conspicuously absent. This feature packed release of "Tarzan" onto DVD marks a major sea change in that policy.
A raft of mini featurettes is available on this disc that guide you though the many levels of development the film went through. The principal argument as to why this film was animated is that the original Edgar Rice Burroughs character was so lithe and animal-like, that a live action film would have been impossible to achieve. The animation process is certainly fascinating and the storyboard comparison and abandoned sequences give an interesting insight into the time and talent taken to create this movie.
On DVD, the film takes on an almost 3-D quality that is impossible to fault. The picture is nigh on perfect and is stunning in its depth of quality.
The 5.0 sound mix is also very good with thunder, crashing waves and the inferno of the opening storm very impressive. The soundtrack by Phil Collins and N Sync is far from classic but the presentation is fine.
Plenty of features have been added for the kids including trivia games, a read-along story version of the film and trailers for forthcoming films.
