It's interesting how some otherwise pedestrian thrillers can improve on DVD, just like "The Bone Collector".
This type of movie has to rely on building tension and the super busy 5.1 encoding on the disc helps do that. From subtle creepy noises in the background to the thunder that cracks and rolls around your room in chapter six, there's plenty to unsettle.
A tale of a psychotic that leaves his victims dead and without their bones, it is not particularly original. But it still has the odd decent set piece and looks good. The imagery throughout is sharp and vibrant with the dark interior cab scene in chapter three full of detail. It's the type of genre film that demands plenty of gloom and this DVD does plenty to enhance the creepy places that Angelina Jolie has to investigate.
The main added feature on the disc is the commentary from director Phillip Noyce. There are no rules about what a commentary should contain but generally they focus on explaining how various effects were achieved and some anecdotes from the filming. Noyce decides instead to deconstruct the film to psychological levels that quite frankly it doesn't have. It gets a little wearing after a while but you're left in no doubt that he likes his film. And let's face it, job satisfaction is important, so at least he's happy.
