Complaint

This bulletin included comments by the athlete Caster Semenya on gender testing at the Olympics.  A listener complained the report failed to include a statement that Semenya has male biology.  The ECU considered whether the item met the BBC’s accuracy Guidelines.

Outcome

This was a very brief report about Semenya, which referred to “the world’s best known hyperandrogenic athlete” who was disputing “gender verification tests”.  In the ECU’s view this was sufficient to inform listeners who Semenya was and there was no prospect listeners would have been materially misled by the absence of further information.
