What is Cinco de Mayo?
Cinco de Mayo is a special day celebrated on the 5th of May, and its name even means “Fifth of May” in Spanish. It marks the anniversary of an important moment in history when Mexican soldiers won a big battle against the French in 1862 in a place called Puebla.
Today, people in Mexico and many Mexicans living in the United States celebrate with colourful parades, lively music and lots of delicious food. You might see mariachi bands playing, dancers wearing bright traditional outfits and floats decorated in green, white and red, the colours of the Mexican flag. It is a joyful day full of pride, culture and fun.
