Twiggy

Known to millions by her childhood nick name, Twiggy was the world’s first supermodel. Raised in the London suburb of Neasden, Lesley Hornby changed the face of fashion forever, becoming an icon for a generation. Her image still endures, 35 years on.

With her waif-like figure, androgynous haircut and striking false eyelashes, Twiggy was like nothing anyone had seen before. She came to symbolise an image that would epitomise the swinging 60s era of new-found freedom and youth, with millions of teenage girls idolising the 16 year-old. She quickly became a household name, with a face that graced the covers of Vogue, Tatler and even her own publication, Her Mod, Mod Teen World. Twiggy had firmly captured the world’s imagination - so much so her photograph was encased in a time capsule and sent into space!
