Jane Shepherdson on the significance the collection had on the high street
It's thanks to the vision of ex-Topshop brand director Jane Shepherdson that the high street chain is the force it is today. When Jane left school to become an allocator at the then-unfashionable Topshop, she harboured an ambition to develop beautifully inspired and, most importantly, sought after collections.
After working her way up the rungs of the shopping giant, Shepherdson decided the best approach was to team up with the hottest young names in fashion. This led to successful collaborations with Zandra Rhodes, Jonathan Saunders, Christopher Kane and Emma Cooke. To add to this movement, a brave new Unique collection was also launched by Topshop’s own in-house designers and saw the high street exhibit at London Fashion Week for the first time. Instead of copying the catwalk they were now inventing it.
