The Big Wide World

It's all change at the mo. Get my grades from uni in a week (yuk) and my three years of microwave noodles and Daytime television are over. It's terrifying how quickly the past three years have gone, but everything's looking good. My summer's filling up nicely with meetings and other projects I've been asked to get involved with so I'm very lucky to have some work lined up already. It is a daunting prospect to leave the security of student-hood and become a 'real' grown-up but thanks to winning the bursary loads of oppurtunities have opened up to me and it looks like an exciting time ahead. So, all you budding comedy geniuses should really follow my lead - landing a placement at the BBC has been fantastic, not to mention showbiz. I saw Les Dennis the other day, jealous?

Back to basics

The re-write continues and yet again the business of comedy becomes very serious. Things are so hectic at the moment that I'm finding myself having 3 minute bursts of inspiration before stressing about something else I've forgot to post or fill in. Not too surprising then that staring at my computer is beginning to drive me mad - that's why I've rediscovered my trusty notebook. Keeping a scabby piece of paper and a lovely pen close at hand has been fabulous this week. Without forcing my brain to think too hard, when a joke or an idea has popped in to head I scribble it down. That way, when I pluck up the courage to return to the computer I already have a couple more things to squeeze in to my script. I'm sure an obvious tip for all you writers, but a bloody good one.

Here we go again...

Time for me to rewrite my first draft. Although it sounds like a pain-staking task, I do enjoy it. The bulk of the script's down so it's just a case of strengthening the characters and sprinkling a bit of magic comedy dust over it. (Mind you, if it was that easy I suppose there wouldn't be a re-write... aaarrgghh!) My best inspiration for gags definitely comes from real people. Living in Costa Del Salford means I only have to hang out of the window for a bit of inspiration. It's also great when I'm stuck for character names - the amount of Levi's, McKenzies and Destinys on my street has certainly opened up my eyes.
Watching Gavin and Stacey on BBC3 has inspired me too! What a great sitcom, and the charcaters are fabulous, particularly the lovely 'Nessa. It's such a simple idea, executed brilliantly and rapidly becoming my new favourite - thank God 'cos something's got to replace Peep Show!

Chim-chimminy

Confirmed this week that I'm off to London in the summer to have a nosey round the set of Grown-ups when the second series goes in to production. I can't wait as I get to shadow Susan Nickson, the writer, for the week and see what really goes on behind the scenes. I've also heard from the Two Pints team about doing some work with them in the summer, so it looks like once again my dreams of a week in Benidorm must go on hold... Oh well, the life of a 'real' writer, hey?
As well as frantically sorting out my diary, re-writing my script, graduating from uni, finding somewhere to live and fitting in my second job, I forgot my blog last week so many apologies - if my head hasn't exploded by next week I'll be back with the next exciting installment - how glamourous this media life-style is x

A day out... in prison.

Last week I got to have a nosey around the set of a new BBC3 sitcom at the Pie Factory. I was lucky enough to have read a few of the scripts before I went down there so I knew I'd be entertained. It was very strange walking in to the set - which looked exactly like we were in prison. Perhaps I should have taken a bus-load of my neighbours with me to show them the error of their ways and put them off continually stealing shopping trolleys and driving them in to people's cars...
It's so exciting to actually watch a sitcom being filmed, but obviously pretty hard not to let out a big Grotbags-esque cackle at the funny bits. It's definately spurred me on with my own writing. I'm in the right business, if only for the free sandwiches. It never fails to amaze me just how much hard graft goes in to comedy, it's certainly not as easy as you might think to make people laugh. (Are you reading this Lenny Henry...?)

I've finished my first script now, so it's back to the drawing board. If I'm gonna win a Bafta, I might as well aim for two or three and get them all out of the way at once...

Let's Brainstorm, yeah?

Last week I took part in a writing residential here at the BBC. Myself and eight other writers worked on new ideas for TV and radio, as well as ideas that could be carried across to the internet. All the technical talk did make my brain hurt at first, but it was really interesting to have to try and think outside the box. We had loads of discussions and talks from real writers(!) about creating a whole world for your characters' to live in, which was great. I don't know if I liked it as much as the free wine, but I've definitely refreshed my own knowledge as well as learning a lot of new tips. On the last day we had to present our ideas in groups of three, which was terrifying but amazingly we pulled it off. We had to put together a visual pitch with the aid of a video camera - it was brilliant to try and get our characters on their feet and improvise situations with them. I defintely need one, and if I don't come up with anything I can just film myself setting the kitchen alight and send it to You've Been Framed.

Fair Play

I’ve had a fantastic Easter, back home at Hotel Wincup. There’s nothing like lying on your parents’ sofa and watching Most Haunted. Not only has my trip home been relaxing, but inspirational too.

The fair was in town – it needs little explanation. On Monday I celebrated my 24th birthday with vodka, redbull and travelling folk. Me and the fabulous Tom Holland, number one fan of the waltzers, hit the funfair on two separate occasions. We did receive whiplash from the Dodgems and Tom lost a bit of knee on the ‘Jumping Frog’ (which I think was a children’s ride) but the fun we had has made me think twice about my ‘No win, No fee’ lawsuit. It was hilarious driving into elderly people and screaming louder than the kids, and the Fairground Supervisors (P.C. term) provided me with plenty of ideas for my script and characters, most of which are quite disturbing… I’m sure I saw someone drinking Fairy Liquid from the bottle.

Ah, the children of the night

I can’t believe it - it’s still sunny in Manchester! Obviously, to counteract such a glorious predicament my body has decided I need a cold. Nothing goes better with an ice cream than snot. However, it’s my birthday on Monday so I expect I’ll get a few diamonds to make me feel better – for reference, all shopping vouchers will be burnt upon opening.

It’s been an interesting couple of days at the BBC. I was able to watch some sort of bomb-scare from my window yesterday, so that lightened the mood. This is Manchester, so it couldn’t have been an Easter bonnet parade. My script’s coming along, although yet again I face the daunting prospect of feedback from a real BBC Producer! It’s great to hear what other people think of my work, as long as they use phrases like “hilarious”, “so funny I wee’d” and “Norwich genius”…

This week I’ve been watching a lot of ‘Nighty Night’ and ‘Peep Show’ so I’m trying to get back to my filthy roots. I often think I’d be better suited to late night Channel 5, but the BBC asked first. I’m like a vampire – once you invite me in, I just don’t leave.

I should be heading home to Norwich for Easter, which is exciting. I haven’t been back since before Christmas, and I hear we’ve got an indoor toilet now so I can’t wait. I shall be entertaining myself on the journey home with the latest instalment of ‘Love It!’ magazine – a must-have for any up-and-coming media types. I never get bored of real life stories about stripping dwarves. (If anyone from ‘Love It!’ is reading, I’m sure you now owe me a free subscription…)

It’s my Dad’s birthday next week too, so Happy Birthday El Scorpio! (He’s a wrestler.) And just in case any of my family were thinking of buying me a nice ‘writer’s’ pen for my birthday, I’d rather just have the cash x x x

Coming out of hibernation

Apologies to anyone that reads my little blog, I hope you’re not all members of my immediate family! I haven’t been at the BBC for the last couple of weeks as I’ve been tied up at uni with my FINAL show – scary, but it means I get to watch Rikki Lake more often. Everything went really well and we haven’t been expelled yet so I don’t think anyone minded the odd rude word.

On Monday night, I went to the Comedy Store for the screenings of two new BBC Three pilots. It was a great evening, and fab to finally see the programmes I’d heard so much about since I started here. Apparently my fog-horn laugh was heard all over the club, but it wasn’t just because of the free drinks. The pilots were really funny and looked great and I’m always a sucker for a few well-placed swear words. I have to admit I was a bit jealous though, so I’m even more inspired to get on with my new script.

Things are going really well and its so nice to know that uni is finally over and I can concentrate totally on my writing - that’s if I can resist the beer-gardens. Summer in Manchester is a very bizarre occurrence. I feel like the Blue Peter tortoise being taken out of his cardboard box for the first time in months, but you can keep the lettuce, I’m only interested in cocktails.

Secret Babies

I've had another hectic week. As well as working on my new script for the BBC I've had rehearsals for my final Uni theatre project too. Learning lines is certainly harder than writing them, as Hollyoaks is on literally all the time. I've been waiting for that teenager to give birth to her secret baby for months, but surely she could have held off for another couple of weeks until I've got a bit of work out of the way...

I'm back in at the BBC next week so I'll be able to get some feedback on my episode ideas. I'm sure you're all gagging to know what they are but I'm not risking someone stealing my amazing ideas and snatching that comedy award right from under my nose. I've also started writing a short film which we hope to make in the next few weeks. That sounds a bit dubious but I can assure you it's nothing racy, just two Nuns having a punch-up on the moors. Good family entertainment.

As played by Tom Selleck

As last week started off with another thrilling Channel 5 documentary, it's been a strange few days. 'The Twins That Share a Body' on the Monday night has left me full of questions, not such a good thing when I'm working on a new script. I'm working from home this week as the BBC is pretty hectic at the moment. It's great to spend some time writing in my room but I have really had to restrain myself from extensive Conjoined Twin research on the Internet and stick to working on my script.

It's been an unusually sunny week in Manchester though, and that teamed with a cocktail I discovered called Magnum PI has resulted in another pleasant week. My writing's going well and I'm feeling productive, and I've had no alcohol today whatsoever. It's so nice to have time to enjoy writing instead of feeling stressed that my jokes aren't funny and my puncuation's rubbish.

Oh, and Happy Birthday Mum! I hope your present arrived on time. If it hasn't I shall be writing to Watchdog x

Mutter mutter mutter

It's amazing. After a couple of weeks of terrifyingly clichéd 'Writer's block' my brain seems to be full of ideas again. I've had so many thoughts popping in to my head I've caught myself muttering, a bit like Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man. Obviously, whether or not those ideas are actually funny is another matter entirely.

I hadn't realised that being a comedy writer could be such a daunting prospect, but the pressure to be funny now is an incredibly serious matter. Always one for multi-tasking, I've been working on a few different ideas over the last couple of weeks. Obviously I thought they were all hilarious, BAFTA written all over them, but I'm actually working at the BBC now and professional funny people read my ideas. Scary. But absolutely amazing. It's great when I write something that my Mum and Dad find hilarious but sometimes I wonder if their opinion could be slightly biased. Having to show my work straight to the BBC is ever so slightly terrifying but when people like them it's fantastic. Now I'm learning to relax and trust my own sense of humour, although trying to remember that not everyone finds old people falling over funny. I can't help it, I've been brainwashed by You've Been Framed.

In other news, I was pleased to realise my suspected Bird Flu was merely a common cold. Unfortunately it means I'm no longer eligible for compensation but I do get to have some Calpol and go to bed at 8pm. Yessss.

Small. Porky.

Just when January was proving to be cold and rubbish, a fantastic new fad is sweeping the nation. Mini-pigs! Tiny little pigs that you can dress up and carry in your handbag - hooray! Already proving very popular in China, mini-pigs are the next big thing for (sh)IT girls and I can't wait until the Arndale Centre is full of young Chavettes carrying miniature farm animals in their Primark bags. I think a mini-pig would be the perfect accessory for my new career. Chihuahuas are very last year, and you can't milk one of those. I'm contemplating buying a min-pig from Ebay, but I don't know if it would survive the jiffy bag...

Anyway, I've been at the BBC for about 4 weeks now and it's been fantastic so far. I've already been to the North West Comedy Awards, which were brilliant. I also got to have a look round the set of 'Ideal' a couple of weeks ago which was really good. Moz's flat looks just like my Student Halls so I felt right at home - except there were no cleaners that looked like Jimmy Krankie, stealing my cigarettes and spitting on the floor.

It has been strange trying to think of my self as a 'writer', instead of just some girl with a big gob that writes things. It's a great opportunity though and it's wonderful to have experienced people reading your work without them writing "See me" at the bottom in red biro. I shall endeavour to develop my ideas, and try and raise some serious philosophical debates within my blog. But don't hold your breath x

About Kate

After 21 years in sunny Norfolk I decided to lock up my combine harvester and head north.

I worked in Daytime television for three years and decided the time had come for me to explore and develop my skills.

Having always been a huge fan of Northern comedy, and Blanche from Coronation Street, I decided that Manchester would be the perfect place to start.

I began a degree in Media and Performance at Salford University in 2004. Over the past three years I've tried my hand at all sorts, including stand-up, but have always enjoyed writing the most.

I suppose it comes from a love of the way people talk to each other, and I love nothing more than listening in to old ladies' conversations on the bus.

After taking a scriptwriting course at university last year I realised that writing for television was something I really wanted to pursue. Luckily for me, my lovely tutor put me in touch with Comedy North and after being put forward for the Writer's Bursary I won.

Winning the Bursary and working with the comedy department here in Manchester has been a dream come true. I still can't quite believe that they've let me in to the building, let alone given me all the support and advice I should need in embarking on a career in writing.

I couldn't have hoped for a better opportunity, particularly at the beginning of my career.

Now I just have to write that award-winning sitcom…
