On air: Is Nigeria right to suspend the Super Eagles?

This topic was discussed on World Cup Have Your Say on 30 June 2010. Listen to the programme.

Nigeria's president, Goodluck Jonathan, has suspended the Super Eagles from competition for two years following their poor performance at the World Cup.

What's your reaction? Has he done the right thing to 'punish' poor performance? Is it something you think other countries should consider? Or is this simply an over reaction?

On air: Are your country's spies your national heroes?

They lived seemingly perfect lives, a typical couple in their 40's, pillars of the neighbourhood and their communities. But according to the FBI, they were just covers for the alleged Russian spies that were living in the United States.

The day after 10 people were arrested Russia has, of course, blasted the allegations as baseless:
"In our opinion, such actions are groundless and pursue unseemly aims."

The story has been picked up almost everywhere as bloggers and news media pour over the details of the 'ordinary people' who posed as married couples. This blogger says it's the same old story and the Cold War is still being played out.

And whenever stories of international espionage hit the headlines the blogosphere comes alive with all kinds of comments ranging from fascination about the details, even suggesting their own theories about who, if not Mossad, may have killed Hamas operative Mahmoud al-Mabhouh.

But does our fascination with spies mean that we see them as national heroes? If they've helped a country to protect it's citizens from a serious threat, that's one thing, but what about paid informants that endanger other people's freedoms? Should spies be seen as national heroes?

On air: Should we feel sorry for Tony Hayward?

He's one of the most infamous men in the world. BP chief executive Tony Hayward has been vilified for being the man at the helm of the worst environmental disaster in US history.

Even though he says he's 'personally devastated' by the spill, and taken full responsibility for the clean up, he's still one of the most hated men in the US.

You can follow Tony Hayward's testimony to a US Congress committee on the BBC News website from 1500 BST (1000 EST).

Is it fair that Tony Hayward is pilloried by a hostile press? BP has now agreed to a $20 billion compensation fund for victims of the oil spill and during Tuesday's Congressional hearings top executives from four major oil companies admitted they are also ill equipped to deal with one.

And after President Obama's address, is there a case to say that the politicians should have ensured stricter regulation for deep sea drilling in the first place?

This blogger suggestsTony Hayward has been made a scapegoat for the failures of politicians, lack of regulation and highlighting the mismanagement of the big oil companies.

But this professor from Harvard Business School thinks BP needs a new leader who engenders confidence:

Tony Hayward's actions have not been responsive, and when that happens, a manager is dispensable.

On air:Is it up to young people to change the world?

Today is Youth Day in South Africa, a day that honours all the young people who lost their lives in the fight against apartheid and Bantu Education.

It's a day that many see as a celebration and whereas others remember the struggle against what was essentially racist legislation:

"Natives [blacks] must be taught from an early age that equality with Europeans [whites] is not for them."

You can read more about the why the protests began here

As young people in South Africa prepare to celebrate the day a movement began to change their lives, the Soweto newspaper editorial says both young and old have forgotten the sacrifice made over 30 years before:

Booze, bashes and other unmentionables characterise how both young and old celebrate this day. We are in danger of forgetting our history. We do not guard our gains and victories. We let our memories scatter in the wind.

Is it fair to say younger generations forget the sacrifices the older generations have made? This blog feels the courage of the students should be honoured.

But these students from Soweto spoke to the BBC's World Today this morning and said they can't live up to the ideals of those who fought against oppression:

I think most of us realise they fought so hard for us to be where we are today, we are trying to embody how they want us to live but it is difficult for us to embody how they wanted us to live, I can't imagine not having this life.

Should young people today be responsible for overcoming oppression and fighting for justice? Is it fair to give them this kind of responsibility? And how much should those that have overcome oppression be remembered once they have achieved their aims?

WHYS will be at the Hector Pieterson museum tonight with people who took part in the marches and helped children who had been injured to safety.

Should Chris Brown's punishment carry on?

He was vilified by the press, made to apologise publicly and convicted of assault. But it seems singer Chris Brown's punishment goes further than just a criminal conviction.

He has now been denied entry to the UK and his planned concerts will no longer go ahead. It's prompted a twitition on twitter, calling for Brown's visa to be granted on the grounds that his remorse of his attack on his then girlfriend Rihanna is well documented.

It's one of the most shared stories on Facebook with comments like these:

Chris Brown denied a visa in the UK and has had to cancel his tour there. Oh come on, England!

just can't believe how petty this country can be, when you look at what others get away with.

i think he should be allowed in this country everyone makes mistakes...... im going dwn there and thats what im gonna do........ i think its bang out of order and i want the whole world to know it

and there's a Facebook petition too.

But it's not all good. There are a fair few comments in support of the decision of the UK authorities on this blog

Serves him right, He shouldn't hit women

Law should be the same for everyone!!

Where do you stand? Is the UK government right to refuse a visa on security grounds? Chris Brown is a singer with a huge international following and he's been convicted of assault on another major star. But does he seriously pose a security risk as the
authorities say?

Is his criminal conviction and the punishment handed to him enough, or does he have to pay further by not being able to tour internationally?

On air: Is North Korea a real threat to the world?

Chloe here, there seems to be alot of confusion about North Korea and whether it is an aggressor we should fear, or a victim without the power to inflict any damage... should it want to. So on today's show we are assembling a panel of 3 people to answer your questions about North Korea. You can post them here.

Sheetal's original post:
Not according to Michel Chossudovsky from this think tank.

North Korea is portrayed in the international media as a threat to global security, but there is absolutely no evidence to that effect.

And he's not the only one. Douglas H Paal at the Carnegie Endowment for International peace thinks the threat to the world is rather small:

North Korea is an industrial midget and not really in a position to pose a large-scale threat to the neighborhood.

There's no doubt South Korea has the military firepower and some powerful international friends, so as this article suggests, why can't South Korea stand up to North Korea?

Maybe Hillary Clinton's support will give South Korea the confidence boost it wants, and she thinks the world has a duty to respond. But does it?

South Korea, of course, is in the line of fire, so to speak. But is the possibility of North Korea using it's nuclear weapons against other countries real? And with relations between the two neighbours arguably at their worst for some time, surely the threat is regional? Or is any response from North Korea a threat to us all?

Jamaica and Dudus Coke - two names that are still on many most read news sites around the world today. Today, more people have been killed in Kingston as security forces continue to look for Dudus Coke and battle with the people loyal to him.

The WHYS team were fascinated to hear the details of how 'garrisons' work in Kingston.

We'll go back to some of those people in Jamaica to hear what's happened in the past 24 hours, and discuss further benefits men like 'Dudus' can bring when the state fails to provide.

One thing that came up in our editorial meeting and things we've read online, was that Christopher Coke certainly divides people, but why are people willing to lay down their lives for him? It's hardly a meeting of like-minded politics, but somehow two British political parties - one on the left, the other on the right - are to govern Britain for the next few years.

Attacks on the pope and the church come not only from outside the church, but the suffering of the church comes from inside the church, from sin that exists inside the church

The words of Pope Benedict on the abuse scandal that's rocked the Catholic Church.

It seems to be the most direct condemnation by the Pope since news of alleged cover ups of abuse by catholic priests in numerous countries.

And blogs are buzzing with reaction: - New Reformation Advocate writes:
I agree that it's laudable and forthright. The pope appears to get it, at last...Such frank acknowledgment is encouraging.

This blogger says:
It is seemingly a split from the stance of other church leaders, who continue to blame outside sources for the bad press surrounding the Catholic Church today.

And jesterfyl: am impressed (and I am not easily impressed by him). B16 is starting to see what the world has seen for a while.

For the bloggers above, the Pope has finally seen what many have seen for a while and this, as this journalist writes, is why it's so significant.

Does the change in tone by the Pope mean anything? Do you think the Pope's words will force the Catholic Church to reform? And do you welcome what the Pope has said?

David Cameron becomes the new British Prime Minister.

ANOTHER UPDATE...Conservative Party leader David Cameron has become the new UK Prime Minister with Nick Clegg, head of the Liberal Democrats as Deputy Prime Minister.
Watch and read about David Cameron's first speech outside 10 Downing Street

UPDATE: Just 25 hours after Gordon Brown stated his intention to resign, he stood outside 10 Downing Street and resigned. As I write, he is in Buckingham Palace tendering his resignation to the Queen. David Cameron is expected to go to the Palace in the next hour and become the new UK Prime Minister.

SHEETAL'S ORIGINAL POST:
British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has just announced he intends to stand down. This follows days of speculation after a general election failed to produce an outright winner.

He says he has no desire to remain in his current position in light of the economic climate and has asked the Labour Party to start a leadership contest.

So after days and weeks of a less than enthusiastic press, and an election where the Labour Party lost support, we'll be taking your reaction to Gordon Brown's decision to stand down.

On air in Haiti: WHYS in Tent City

If you've any questions for the guests that you hear on today's show, please post them here.

Sheetal: This is the latest blog from Mark in Haiti...

There's so much that you see here that will stay in the memory forever: driving down a street where 4 or 5 buildings are fine and then the next looks like someone has flattened it with a giant fist for example.

But it is the tents which define Port Au Prince more than the rubble. They occupy every free space in the city, they are on roundabouts, in parks, on the hills and sometimes, in the middle of the road. They are grouped in twos and threes, and in other places in groups of thousands and thousands.

It's hot here, and very humid. I can only begin to imagine what it must be like when that heat is magnified by a layer of canvas. Unbearable would be one word for it. And yet hundreds of thousands of people are living like that and have been for months.
What troubles many people - apart from the obvious dire circumstances of how people live - is that it's hard to see when the tents will disappear. We've seen some evidence of rebuilding on a large scale, but we've seen the more wretched sight of people breaking down the rubble of their houses with a single sledgehammer, presumably to one day re-build.

We've also seen people living in tents in the grounds of their old dwellings. As a result, people are afraid of the rains that have just begun and the hurricanes which are predicted for later in the year.

On our way up to the orphanage, we saw the tents clinging to the sides of the hills and you didn't need to be a meteorologist to know that they could so easily be washed down the slopes by the mud and the rain.

So people are getting angry as well as afraid. Some blame the Government, others the aid agencies and the NGOs (we've seen graffiti saying "down with the occupation") and some foreigners in general.

We'll be at the Terrain Acra camp today which when we walked around there on Tuesday was grim but accessible. When the rains come it will be a different story.
We'll aim to give you an idea of what it must be like to live in such conditions - just a stone's throw from where you once lived in comparative - and I emphasise the word comparative - safety and comfort.

As we were heading away from the orphanage today we stopped for a beer. As we entered the bar we saw a guard packing what looked like a serious gun. Our fixer - Dris- said with a shrug "that's Haiti, man" as if that's what life is like here. I imagine that isn't the sense of fatalism being shared in the camps.

WHYS will be speaking to lots of people living in the camps today. We'll be happy to put your questions to them during the programme. if you wnat to know how they are coping, what their day to day lives are like, please send your questions in now and the team in London will send them to Mark, James and Alicia.
