Maple Syrup and Charcoal?

Hi, this is Dan with Newshour today.

The campaign group Sense About Science says that this year there has been a big rise in dubious theories about how the body works.

Cheryl Cole told the world about her blood type diet and how it gave her extra energy.

Singer and actress Olivia Newton-John says that she takes digestive enzymes and plant tonics to boost her immune system.

Other unusual ideas about boosting bodily functions have prompted strange diets, from Naomi Campbell's maple syrup, lemon and pepper regime to Girls Aloud's Sarah Harding sprinkling charcoal over her meals.

Sense About Science says there's no need to 'boost' because the body does it naturally, and there are no shortcuts to good food and enough exercise.

Have you tried a 'celebrity diet?' How did you get on?

Or do you think they're all nonsense?

On air: What's the problem with Elton becoming a parent?

This topic was discussed on World Have Your Say on 28 December 2010. Listen to the programme here.

Hi, this is Ros updating Dan's earlier post. I don;t think many of you saw this story coming. Sir Elton (along with his partner, David Furnish) have a son born to a surrogate mother in California on Christmas Day, and there are three things being talked through online.

1) Should a gay couple be allowed to have a surrogate child?

2) Is Elton too old to become a dad?

3) The merits of the name Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John. (As a man wth a woman's name, I'm passing no comment...)

There's also some concern about the level of scrutiny young Zacharia will live with.

Are any or all of these issues worthy of consideration, or should we just raise a glass to Elton and his partner, and let them get on with bringing the boy up.

Is the Pope Welcome In The UK?

In some ways, the visit of Pope Benedict XVI to Britain next week (he's here from Thursday 16th to Sunday 19th) is more exciting than the previous Papal visit, by John Paul II in 1982.

Sure, JP2 was a rock star and the mood of love and reconciliation with the Church of England was in the air then.

This time, the atmosphere is darker, overshadowed by the child abuse scandal and the Vatican's decision to make it easy for Anglicans to leave their church and "come over to Rome" if they don't like the idea of women bishops.

The news is that takeup of tickets for the openair masses at which Benedict will officiate is much lower than expected. Contributions from the faithful to defray costs of the visit are coming in short too.

And yet Roman Catholicism remains a central part of the lives of hundreds of millions of people around the world.

Some of those feel that the Pope and those around him have let them down and led them into a social, medical and theological cul-de-sac.

How will Britain's many faithful Catholics respond to Pope Benedict XVI? How much impact will the demonstrators from the Protest the Pope campaign have? We'll be examining these issues on World Update in the coming weeks.

How important is local media to you?

I've spent the afternoon learning about hyperlocal multimedia sites from Ed Walker, who runs yourCardiff, a community site that points ahead to some of the ways online media will develop from newspapers.

It's not print, it's not local TV, it's not radio, but it's got elements of all of them.
The site breaks news too - like this video of police smashing the car window of a pensioner

Ed has some ideas on how things might be adapted for the developing world - "start with a daily text message to mobiles" he suggested.

If you're involved in local media projects for your community, we'd like to hear about it.

We'll transmit the interview with Ed Walker on World Update sometime this week, and incorporate your ideas and comments.

Northern Ireland's Bloody Sunday Inquiry: Money Well Spent?

World Update will be live from Derry/Londonderry in Northern Ireland next Tuesday 15th and Wednesday 16th June, to cover the release and aftermath of the report with huge significance to peace and reconciliation there - the Saville Inquiry into what's called Bloody Sunday, the day in 1972 when 13 protesters against British rule were killed.

Britain's Parachute Regiment was accused of indiscriminate shooting. The official British response was that the soldiers were attacked and fought back. A previous inquiry was dismissed by families of those who died as a whitewash.

On Tuesday, hours before the report is published, we'll hear from the relatives of the victims, from eyewitnesses and from the military side.

Were the Paras told to 'teach the hooligans of Derry a lesson' as has been alleged? Or did an IRA gunman fire first, as some have claimed? The Inquiry took hundreds of testimonies over more than six years.

Then on Wednesday, with the full report available, we'll measure the impact of its revelations on the power sharing peace plan in Northern Ireland and the continued campaign for Irish unification still being fought by dissident Republicans outside the peace deal.

And what about the cost of the Inquiry, estimated to be around $600 million dollars? Was that a price worth paying?

Let us know. And join us if you can.

In answer to the claim from the drugs companies that they need to make profits to fund further research, he insists that only 15 percent of their profits are ploughed back into R&D. But the high prices they charge for their patented medicine make life saving therapy inaccessible to the sick in developing countries where the need is greatest.

Join me, Dan Damon, for World Update at 9GMT, 5 Eastern in the US and lunchtime in East Africa, to hear Sir John's robust disapproval of the big pharmaceutical companies, and give us your comments here, so I can read some of them out on the programme.
