Museum brings Captain Scott's Terra Nova back to Cardiff

A painting depicting Captain Scott's ship, the SS Terra Nova, leaving Cardiff Docks on its ill-fated Antarctic expedition on 15 June 1910, has been bought at auction by The Cardiff Story museum.

The painting, by Richard Short, an accomplished painter who settled in Cardiff after retiring from life as a Master Mariner, was bought for £13,000 at auction at Bonhams in London on Friday 30 March.

<img alt="Terra Nova leaving Cardiff for the South Polar Regions, 15th June 1910, by Richard Short.
Scott's expedition is now renowned in world history, as he and his companions were not only beaten to the Pole by Norwegian Roald Amundsen, but also because it ended in the death of five of the expedition members, including Scott, from starvation and the extreme temperatures.

Cardiff was instrumental in the expedition proceeding. Scott named Cardiff as the Terra Nova's home port in recognition of the support the expedition had received from Wales, and Cardiff in particular. It can be argued that without this support, in both money and in kind, Scott would not have left in time to reach the Pole in 1912.

Funds were raised and sponsorship secured from businesses in the area resulting in donations from steam coal to cooking utensils, lamp oil to the provision of dock facilities. Cardiff had also raised more cash than any other city for Scott, and two leading Cardiff shipowners, Daniel Radcliffe and William J Tatem became two of the expedition's most fervent supporters.

The painting was commissioned by Alderman WH Renwick and WH Newtown to mark the city's pride in playing such a key role in the expedition, and the money required for commissioning it was raised from public subscription. Hanging in the library of the Coal Exchange building in the docks, when news reached Britain of Scott's death in February 1913, the Union Jack and black crepe were draped around it, echoing the profound sense of shock that was felt in the city. When the Terra Nova returned to Cardiff in that same year, 60,000 people welcomed it home.

The Cardiff Story's museum officer Victoria Rogers said: "We're delighted to have secured this stunning painting for the museum and the people of Cardiff. The tragedy of the expedition had a profound effect on the city, which had taken Scott and his companions to its heart, and this painting is the perfect piece to commemorate the expedition and to help tell the story to our visitors.

"Items like this don't come up at auction very often, so we're very thankful to Cardiff Council, UK Antarctic Heritage Trust and the V&A Purchase Fund for their support in securing the painting for generations of Cardiffians to come."

The Cardiff Story is based at the Old Library in the Hayes in Cardiff's city centre. The museum focuses on telling Cardiff's history through the eyes of those who made it - its people. It is open seven days a week and entry is free.

Appeal for Sir Kyffin Williams artworks held in private collections

A north Wales gallery has launched an appeal for privately held artworks by Sir Kyffin Williams to go on show in a special exhibition.

Oriel Ynys Mon in Llangefni, Anglesey, wishes to borrow original artworks held in private hands. The gallery is planning a major exhibition of Sir Kyffin's lesser known works, to run in the Kyffin Williams Gallery later this year.

Sir Kyffin Williams

Pat West, curator of the exhibition, said: "We're very keen to hear from anyone who has original works by Kyffin Williams.

"Once an artwork is sold to a private owner, unless it is lent to a gallery, you could say that it almost disappears."

The exhibition, From The Hearth To The Oriel, will run from 17 March to 7 October. Some owners of Sir Kyffin's paintings have already come forward.

"This is an opportunity for everyone to experience the pleasure of standing in front of some great works of art," says West. "We have already had some phone calls, and owners are looking forward to seeing their artwork in a gallery setting.

"We have borrowed from private collections in the past, but never on this scale. I would encourage anyone who's interested to get in touch."

John Harrison and Ned Thomas crowned Wales Book Of The Year authors

Photo: Celf Calon

John Harrison's Cloud Road, an account of his five-month journey through through the Andes, has been named as the English-language 2011 Wales Book of the Year.

The winner of the Welsh-language award was Ned Thomas for his autobiography Bydoedd. Read more about the book and its author on the BBC Cymru website.

Harrison grew up in Liverpool, but moved to Cardiff following his postgraduate studies. He works as a freelance writer, lecturer and travel guide in remote regions, and has twice won the Alexander Cordell Travel Writing prize.

Cloud Road was published by Parthian in 2010, and recounts his time travelling in remote villages along the great road of the Incas - the Camino Real, or Royal Road. Harrison walked more than 1,500 miles, from the Equator to Cuzco and to Machu Picchu.

<img alt="Ned Thomas.
The other shortlisted English-language works were Terminal World by Alastair Reynolds and What The Water Gave Me by Pascale Petit. The judges on the English-language panel were Francesca Rhydderch, Jon Gower and Deborah Kay Davies.

Ms Rhydderch said of Cloud Road: "Open this book - any page will do - and you will find lyrical, sharply observed descriptions that convey you to another time and place, while keeping you anchored in the realities of the here and now.

"It has a layered texture that comes from deep, unstinting research, and a control of voice that is the hallmark of a committed, well-practised talent. This is an unusually powerful and moving book."

Richard Burton to get star on Hollywood Walk of Fame

Welsh actor Richard Burton is to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles, it has been announced.

A fundraising drive was led by Professor Dylan Jones-Evans, director of enterprise at the University of Wales. He was informed on Wednesday that the application for a star had been successful.

"I learnt of the announcement that the decision had been made via Twitter but didn't realise our application had been granted until I checked my email.

"Normally these stars are paid for by film companies or studios hoping to promote their movie but I think it's important for Wales that we raise the money ourselves.

"It's what Richard Burton would have liked, for us to do this ourselves is important and shows national appreciation for his talent and standing."

The campaign group must now raise around £28,000 to create and maintain the star. For more information visit the BBC News website.
