WEIRD SHAPES

In the small hours of a Monday morning from 2-3am you can hear a selection of my favourite new tunes compiled into an hour-long mixtape of nonstop music. All the audio is sourced from the BBC Introducing Uploader - some of it recommended by friends and colleagues and some discovered via Twitter and my own Fresh On The Net blog.

From 3am each Monday the latest mixtape is available free via the 6 Music Downloads Page - where you'll also find archived episodes from the previous 4 weeks. All the tracklists and start times for each track are published here - together with a link to each artist's website. These are the listings for Monday, 22nd April 2013.

WEIRD SHAPES - We Need This [Start 00:13]
http://www.weirdshapes.co.uk
"All we've done for the last 12 months is bang our metaphorical brains against every literal piece of studio equipment that we've amassed during numerous recent ebay scouting missions" say Weird Shapes (above). The first product of this technological rampage is this track We Need This. As always its a self assessment, against the backdrop of an escapist eulogy written in the confines of British heavy industry. We Need This is the first in a long line of tracks that we're going to be releasing on different blogs over the coming months. It got its first play on KYEO/Narc and is available to download for free from our Soundloud page (sounclound.com/weirdshapes). So if there are any bloggers out there who might want to feature some exclusive Weird Shapes material, plus an interview with the band, please get in touch dan@weirdshapes.co.uk."

JESS HARVEY - Don't You Wonder [Start 03:35]
http://facebook.com/JessHarveyMusic
A new discovery - whose music forwarded to us by Kelly Betts from BBC Introducing in Beds, Herts and Bucks - Jess Harvey is an 18 year old songwriter who plays keyboard and guitar. Her debut studio EP, "Heard if not Seen" can be heard and downloaded online, along with various live recordings and her latest original tracks. Experimenting with genres such as pop, jazz and acoustic, her aim is to blend "mellow jazz vocals, intricate piano parts and layered vocal harmonies". She can regularly be found performing around Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire, and you can catch up with her on Facebook, Bandcamp, Youtube and Soundcloud by googling "Jess Harvey Music".

BIGGER THAN SEATTLE - When We're Apart [Start 07:03]
http://www.facebook.com/biggerthanseattle
This track was recommended to us by Louise Brierley who co-hosts BBC West Midlands Introducing. Bigger than Seattle are, we're told, "an Indie Rock band who started out in early 2012 as a quartet of musicians from different Stourbridge based bands: four blokes out to blow your mind with natural grooves and vibes." Within a few months they had recorded their debut EP Cherish This - and by the end of the year were "playing great venues in cities around the UK. 2013 promises a host of new songs, recordings and further UK gigging. See our twitter for more updates".

CURXES - Further Still [Start 10:37]
http://www.curxes.com
Brighton's Curxes (pronounced "Curses") consist of the impossibly glamorous Roberta Fidora and Macaulay Hopwood - who describe themselves as "a decorative set of bones, channelling the ghosts of discotheques past" - and for many of our readers will, I'm sure need no Introducing at all. Their Wordpress-based website is not only visually rich but warm and entertaining in style - and clearly written by the band themselves. (A wonderful contrast to the many other fast-rising artists whose idea of interactivity is a form saying "subscribe to our mailing list" and the email address of their management office.) For example: "Among otter things this month (yes, that was deliberate, we’re sorry), we’ve been cooking up some clatterbang with our special brand of “narcissistic flutes” for Scotlandia’s own Chvrches, in a special 1996-style affair: Chvrches vs Curxes. The song is called Recover and you can listen/taste the difference between the original and our remix below. It was released digitally on March 25th and will be out vinylly for Record Store Day (20th April 2013). Yum." This track Further Still premièred on The 405 before making an appearance on Electronic Rumors, Hand Clap Movement, Wonky Sensitive and Faded Glamour. The song is available not only in this week's Mixtape but as a free download from their website. As Curxes themselves say, "help yourself pop pickers…"

FLUTES - Kilburn [Start 14:10]
http://www.uptheflutes.com
"Hello there, we are genuinely honoured, very excited and admittedly a little surprised that you have a desire to learn more about our band. The roots of Flutes started over ten years ago, when Godfrey met Andy at university on the windswept coast of Fife. Add in Rob and Alex, and for the past 8 years we’ve been concocting a musical story together which contains the following elements: a church hall in Oxford, corporate espionage, recording in sheds, recording on industrial estates, the M6, an old white minibus, too many London gigs circa 2007/08, grizzly old men, a BBC sound technician with a fetish for vintage microphones, big belly laughs, and a Scottish football stadium. More recently, we decamped to a static caravan in Craigenmuir on the outskirts of Glasgow. This put us within striking distance of the recording studio Chem19 to finally document the songs which provided the soundtrack to this chunk of our life. Guided by Jamie ‘The Tornado’ Savage, we’re happy to report that we have a record that we’re dead chuffed with. To top it off, my old primary school friend Mark Buchanan has directed a couple of fantastic videos to accompany the album. We’ve got lots planned for 2013 so please do visit our website for updates, new releases and live dates."

THE LAKE POETS - April [Start 17:59]
http://thelakepoets.com
Sunderland musician Martin Longstaff sometimes makes noisy brasss electro music with eccentric local supergroup B>E>A>K. Since April 2010 he has also been writing and performing delicate emotional acoustic music under the name of The Lake Poets - sometimes alone with his guitar and sometimes with a band of kindred spirits. His live shows to date have included appearances in Durham Cathedral, Sunderland Minster and London’s Roundhouse Theatre. On record, The Lake Poets' music is released by the local label he co-founded, Tiny Lights Recordings - which is also home to Natasha Haws, Blank Maps, The Railway Club - and O'Messy Life whose music also appears at the end of this week's mixtape. launch show for début single, ‘City By The Sea’, at The Sage sold out 3 months in advance. The launch shows for all three of his singles have sold out months in advance. This one - produced by Mick Ross & James Mottershead - comes out next Monday (April 29th) and he next plays live at at Newcastle's Evolution festival on May 26th.

MOUNT FABRIC - Heuristic Fits [Start 21:33]
http://www.mountfabric.com
Mount Fabric are nothing to do with fabric, or how to mount it: they are in fact falsetto, reverb, toms, distortion, effects, shattering highs and abusers of all things classic. They plan to release a series of singles throughout 2013 that focus on the meaning of life, of which Heueristic Fits is the first. Last year they opened for the likes of Alt-J, Dum Dum Girls and Exitmusic, toured California and headlined the new music stage at BT's London Live in Hyde Park last year - before retreating to their Manchester studio to record new material. Their passion lies, they tell us "in creating interesting music; from their avoidance of chords, choruses, and lyrical clichés, to their ultra-cheap D.I.Y. recording set-up, they try whenever possible to avoid the obvious and pursue the slightly unusual. Heuristic Fits will be followed by a second single in June, accompanied by a launch night at Manchester's Ruby Lounge on June 5th."

DARK BLUE - The False Idol [Start 25:27]
http://darkblue.bandcamp.com
"Dark Blue descended from the planet Jupiter three weeks ago, landing on the top of a mountain in New Zealand. Despite the lush scenery, he didn't much like it (due to the many biting insects) so opted instead, to live in Bingley, West Yorkshire. Since then Dark Blue has become fascinated with the local architecture and discovered many books about music at the local Library, which has inspired him to create his own sounds. In June he will be releasing an EP of the music he has created - from which The False Idol is a taster."

THE RAMISCO MAKI MAKI ROCKING HORSE - Danger Danger [Start 30:09]
http://www.ramiscomakimaki.com
The Ramisco Maki Maki Rocking Horse is an alternative indie folk artist from the Scottish Highlands. "Armed with his acoustic guitar and fuzz box the Horse throws forth wherever his hooves land, a guerrilla rocker of sorts with a history of pop-up shows that span parts of the UK, Europe and North America. Previous to becoming The Horse, Ray McCartney was a founding member, songwriter, performer and producer of The Kazoo Funk Orchestra. He performed as Little Beard before leaving the collective for brain surgery late in 2008. Ray was also the founding member / songwriter and frontman of El Jugador until the band split in 2005. A recent session Ramisco did for BBC Scotland with his backing band The Wat Wat Kings will be aired by BBC Alba's RAPAL Tbh on April 25th at 10pm. His latest EP, Squawk!, is out now."

NB: BBC Alba is a Scottish Gaelic language digital TV channel jointly owned by the BBC and MG Alba, launched in 2008: the name Alba is the Scottish Gaelic name for Scotland. It's the first multi-genre channel to come entirely from Scotland with almost all of its programmes made domestically.

OH SO QUIET - Rain At Night [Start 32:49]
http://www.ohsoquiet.com
Oh So Quiet consists of the core duo of Lucas and Malena Zavala plus a live band. Originally from Argentina, they grew up in the creative environment of a family packed with architects, fine artists and musicians. When our protagonists reached the respective ages of 7 and 3, their parents decided to move to England. By early 2011 they had gathered together musicians from other parts of the world to form a live band, combining indigenous Latin-American music with Western World indie and folk. The full lineup includes Spanish-American Axel Martínez on bass, Lithuanian Silvija Vil on violin and Belgian Martin Gregoire on drums. Their debut release - the Oh So Quiet EP - is released next Monday April 29th.

COUNCIL TAX BAND - A Salty Grave [Start 36:32]
http://counciltaxband.bandcamp.com
"Andy, James, Charlie and Laura have unremarkable haircuts and lack an interesting backstory: the best they can hope for is to have a good time before being consigned to the dustbin of art rock obscurity. However, Council Tax Band are happy for you to invent any old guff if it helps them fulfil their ultimate goal of selling their music to be used on adverts flogging cardigans and mobile phones to The Great Unwashed. Their EP Three Songs was recorded in a room full of cardboard boxes in around a day, using a combination of borrowed gear, and gear they bought themselves by slogging their guts out in a variety of shit jobs. It’s the first thing they’ve done that they consider fit for public consumption. Prospective 'fans' can download Three Songs for as much or as little cash as they like on our Bandcamp page. Council Tax Band also have Facebook and Twitter accounts exactly where you'd expect to find them, should you feel an overwhelming need to track their bowel movements. Gigs:
April 26th - Bedford, Esquires
May 3rd - London, Cakey Muto
May 21st - St Albans, The Horn
May 24th - Middlesbrough, The Westgarth"

There, you see readers - far and away the most entertaining and informative band biog of the week.

SILENT CITIES - Beating Heart [Start 39:31]
http://www.facebook.com/SilentCitiesUK
Silent Cities is the "blissfully obscure" music project of singer, songwriter, and fingerstyle guitarist, S. Maddison. Last year on this blog I wrote about Silent Cities saying "It's not a question of chords, lyrics, melody or recording quality it's simply that sometimes you can tell within seconds that you're listening to The Real Deal. And - take it from me - this artist, my friends, is The Real Deal." This track Beating Heart is alas not included on Mr Maddison's forthcoming debut EP which is is now streaming at his "new and very official website". Its physical & digital release will take place at Leaf on Bold Street, Liverpool on the 18th May in collaboration with Mellowtone and Rebel Soul.

PETE BEAT - Borderline [Start 42:46]
http://www.petebeat.net
Pete Beat is, he says, "an adventurer in the space of all possible sounds, seeking out sweet harmonies and funky beats wherever they may be found, regardless of danger to his person. Pete Beat released his Doctor Doctor EP (which includes the track Borderline) in March, this being his first release in over two years. A departure from the house and breakbeat styles of his previous released, the new EP has been described as "80s tinged electro pop". Following this, he is back in the studio working on new material. Look out for new tunes, and at some point in the future, a live band being formed (if he ever gets round to it and can find some like minded members to join)."

THE MAY BIRDS - Leah's Song [Start 46:53]
http://www.themaybirds.co.uk
The May Birds are a 4 piece Female band based in London who have spent the last two years playing out in London, Brighton and Bristol. "Our basic setup is guitars, cello, piano and four vocals" they say "but the more time we spend writing and playing the more we're experimenting with bass, percussion and banjo amongst other things. So it's an interesting time and our live shows are developing in a way that feels really exciting. We played Live and Unsigned last year and have since had brilliant support from Annie Nightingale who was judging. She helped get us played on Radio one's Introducing show with Ally McCrae. We're about to start hosting our own music night - called Dusk - at The Bedroom Bar in Shoreditch. The first one will be on May 28th and we have some wonderful acts on the bill. Leah's Song is set to be our next single: we made a video for it on the boat Ella lives on and it will be out soon! "

PJP BAND - Vicious Luck [Start 50:45]
http://www.thepjpband.com
When Plymouth's Patrick James Pearson Band (now known simpljy as PJP Band) played Glastonbury’s BBC Introducing Stage two years ago, one bystander commented: "Astonishing for a keyboard driven outfit, real grit and power"... oh, hold on - that was me. Last year they recorded their debut album with producer Pete Miles. Last November the first single from the record I Am A Racer won the public vote on Radio 1’s Review Show - and the video subsequently clocked up 10,000+ views on YouTube. Their self-financed followup album And So It Goes will be released on their own OUF Record label on June 3rd. They play a series of dates to promote it during May including an appearance at Brighton's Great Escape Festival on May 15th. Vinyl copies of the album are already available through the band’s website.

O MESSY LIFE - Challenger [Start 54:39]
http://omessylife.bandcamp.com
"O'Messy Life is a band of hacks from Newcastle that make a kind of grunge-cum-pop punk racket with doom-fuzz riffs, actual guitar solos, heartland-rock pianos and a lyrical preference for delivering otherwise unsavoury levels of self pity through the prism of character narrative" they tell us. "We were once described by DJ legend Steve Lamacq as a band that 'listened to their parent's The Damned records'. We actually listen to a lot of Bruce Springsteen, Dinosaur Jr and The Weakerthans and read a lot of Ray Carver. We released three EPs and two singles in the last couple of years and are currently writing a two-EP set of Doom Ballads, based on the the NASA Constellation programme. This track Challenger comes from the first of these EPs - a five track release due out in July on Tiny Lights Recordings. We also play occasionally as backing band to Withered Hand and our current collaborators are also members of Bridie Jackson & The Arbour."

He reserves the right to stumble blindly from one subgenre to another along a broad path that might be described as dance music. The limitations of being a solo artist - along with the sheer lack of portability of analogue musical equipment - means that he very, very, very rarely plays live. Though it has been known.

GEORGIA RUTH - Week Of Pines [Start 04:43]
http://www.georgiaruthmusic.co.uk
Raised bilingually in Aberystwyth, Wales, Georgia Ruth says her harp playing is inspired more by the guitar styles of Bert Jansch, Meic Stevens and old folk revivalist records than by the classical instruction she received as a child. This Spring she releases her debut album on Gwymon Records, entitled Week of Pines and featuring various musicians including members of Cowbois Rhos Botwnnog. The band's stated aim is to "take you on a musical journey with our modern, poetic lyrics that tell truthful narratives of the lives and times of the youth of today" and they play the legendary Lomax venue in Liverpool this Saturday, April 20th.

FLAMING JUNE - Rumpelstiltskin [Start 14:11]
http://www.flamingjune.co.uk
This is the title track of Rumpelstiltskin & The Perils and Promises of Womanhood - Flaming June's newly released seventh EP on Anchoress Records. The video for it can be found here on YouTube. Built around the vocals of songwriter Louise Hamilton, this five track EP features several songs that spring from Louise's dedication to raising awareness of domestic abuse - and celebrating the strengths and victories of her female protagonists. The Launch night for the release is this Wednesday 24th April at The Hunter Club in Bury St Edmunds.

SPOTLIGHT KID - Budge Up [Start 17:56]
http://www.spotlightkidsound.co.uk
Spotlight Kid, we're told "continue their assault against sonic mediocrity with an assuredness and an emotional depth so many guitar bands are currently lacking. This is the sound of a band rising to the top of their game, while wearing their hearts on their sleeves and performing live shows like their next meal depends on it. Influences from the likes of The Cure, Swervedriver and My Bloody Valentine have allowed Spotlight Kid to produce a heady mix that runs through the entire gamut of emotions." In the last year Spotlight Kid have supported The Joy Formidable on their sold-out UK tour, been chosen by BBC Introducing to play at this year’s Glastonbury and have been playlisted on Radio 1.

SAM THOMAS - I’m Gonna Be A Witch [Start 22:13]
http://samthomasmusic.com
Sam Thomas grew up as the son of a former Opera singer and took percussion lesons from the age of four, which inevitably led him on to playing a full drum kit. "That was more fun as a kid" he remembers. By the time he was a teenager, Sam had learned to play guitar, piano and bass and was performing in his school’s swing band, orchestra and choir. A music course at the University of Westminster was followed by work experience, internships and a chance meeting with Just Music's John Benedict who signed him to the label and hooked him up with producer Mark Sutherland. Two years later Sam's debut album Blind Theatre is ready for release - and this is the first single - taking influence from 1930’s Disney cartoon soundtracks.

PROFESSOR YAFFLE - Sometimes [Start 25:41]
http://soundcloud.com/professoryaffle
Professor Yaffle is the alter ego of longstanding Introducing favourite Lee Rogers - and also the name of his band. "I'll finally be bringing out my album Hermitically Sealed on the new liverpool indie label Nowhere Music, this Summer." he tells us. "We're in the studio putting the last couple of tracks together at the moment but we'll be taking a break to record an acoustic session and interview for Dave Monks' show on BBC Radio Merseyside in May." About this song he says "I wrote the tune and we let our percussionist Michael Holcroft produce it - as he had the most faith in the song. He became a bit obsessed with it, but that said, he did a superb job... "

FLASH PAN HUNTER - Quiz Show [Start 31:12]
http://www.flashpanhunter.com
"I love repetition, syncopation, discordance and experimenting with odd structures." says Brighton artist Clark Gregg - aka Flash Pan Hunter. "It’s not like I’m clever at it, I just enjoy accidentally stumbling across something strange and interesting and then expanding it". Recorded with folk producer Tim Bidwell, this single comes out next Monday, April 22nd. It's taken from his forthcoming debut album Quick Way to Enemy - an instruction manual ("or destruction manual" says Clark) on "how to make enemies of yourself and your friends quickly" - which will be released on July 30th.

TRWBADOR - Safe [Start 35:05]
http://www.trwbador.co.uk
Trwabdor describe themselves as "an acoustic/electronic duo from West Wales" - yet half-Welsh, half-Dutch singer Angharad Van Rijswijk and all-Welsh multi-instrumentalist Owain Gwilym are so much more than that. In 2011 their superb own-label compilation Owlet Music Vol.1 featured "A collection of songs from around the place....A celebration of beauty, DIY ethics and forward thinking" and is still available from the label's website. Safe comes from Owlet Music's latest release - their own long-awaited and self-titled debut album which came out this month. They play both Focus Wales in Wrexham on April 27th and the legendary Green Man festival on August 18th.

LOW DUO - Keep Your Sparkle In The Pain [Start 37:56]
http://www.lowduo.co.uk
First, the official blurb: "Fiercely minimalist, Low Duo are brothers Adam and Leigh Greenwood from Sheffield who write songs with just two layers - one voice and one musical instrument. They have been described as 'stereo Nick Drakes' by The Guardian. Following three critically acclaimed EP's, their self-released first album proper, Dive and Slide into the Blue, is now available via their website." Unofficially: I've been a huge fan of Leigh and Adam's work ever since clapping ears on their supremely melancholy It Was You and Me in January 2011. They've been session guests on 6 Music Introducing and if the lean, atmospheric and understated stylings of this new song appeal to you half as much as they do to me, don't hesitate: nip along to www.lowduo.co.uk and buy the album. Now.

LUCY ZIRINS - Morning Light [Start 41:01]
http://www.lucyzirins.com
Songwriter Lucy Zirins hails from Burnley, Lancashire and three years ago won the accolade of being named as one of PRS For Music's "Class of 2010" songwriters. Having recorded her first E.P at age 16, and another soon after, Lucy has just released her 12-track debut album Chasing Clocks, from which this song is taken. The album was produced by Michael Messer at London's famous Toe Rag Studios and her website includes a video of behind-the-scenes footage of its making. Currently unsigned and self-releasing, Lucy continues to gig and can next be seen live at the Chop Chop Monthly Music Night in Colne, Lancashire a week on on Saturday - April 27th.

PECULIAR DISCO MOVES - Automatic Choice [Start 44:36]
http://peculiardiscomoves.com
"From humble beginnings rehearsing in a Glue Factory, a dentist surgery, and a studio once used by The Lighthouse Family, North-East quintet Peculiar Disco Moves have evolved into a band who glorify the trials and tribulations of raw British life within the boundaries of their own unique brand of feelgood, fun, inspiring, progressive-pop narratives. They have just followed up their 2011 debut EP with a three-track extravaganza called The Domino Effect, released at the end of last week. The band hope to take their sound further afield and are planning a tour for later in 2013"

JOHN SMITH - Salty & Sweet [Start 48:19]
http://www.johnsmithjohnsmith.com
Devon-born guitarist and songwriter John Smith (pictured above) released his fourth album Great Lakes at the end of last month, marking the occasion with a sold-out show at London’s Purcell Room the same night. It's been the culmination of relentless touring as both headliner and as a support act, opening the likes of Iron and Wine, James Yorkston, Jools Holland, Gil Scott-Heron and (most recently) Richard Hawley. In this slow-but-sure way, he has built up a loyal international following. He's currently on tour in Ireland before heading across the channel to Paris - and is set to achieve a lifetime's ambition this Autumn when he plays a headline show at The Union Chapel on Novermber 14th.

BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY - Satisfactory Man [Start 51:24]
http://www.facebook.com/beautifulcountryband
Beautiful Country is a Brighton based rock band made up of brothers Ryan and Vernon plus close friend Anthony on drums, all of whom originally hail from Stoke-on-Trent. They suggest you "think of Bruce Springsteen and The East Street Band distilled into a 3-piece, a little rougher round the edges and with a chip on its shoulder." They recorded their debut EP with Nick Tauber and Jack Ruston at Paul Weller's Black Barn Studio and are currently on the lookout for suitable management. You can catch them live next Tuesday (April 23rd) at The Prince Albert in Brighton.

NINETAILS - Mama Aniseed [Start 56:06]
http://www.ninetailsband.co.uk
This track comes from the superb debut EP Slept And Did Not Sleep by Liverpool outfit Ninetails who are now represented by former Talk Talk manager Keith Aspden. Never a band to stand still their music has - we learn - been evolving rapidly since this recording was made. If you're lucky enough to live within striking distance of Merseyside, they play a double headline show with The Physics House Band this Friday April 19th, at Mello Mello in Liverpool. "This will be your last opportunity to hear us play Mama Aniseed and Rawdon Fever" they warn "before we cocoon ourselves in the new material."

These are the listings for Monday, 8th April 2013.

NATALIE MCCOOL - Black Sun [START 0:11]
http://nataliemccool.co.uk
Well connected Natalie McCool definitely is - with fans ranging from Mark Radcliffe and Chris Martin to Paul McCartney, Nile Rodgers and über producer Steve Levine - who was impressed enough to sign her to his label Hubris Records whilst she was still studying at LIPA. While there, she recruited her current band and her latest batch of songs has been taken up and championed by a tastemaker I trust more than all of the above rolled together - namely Fresh On The Net's Girl Music Guru the mighty Ruth Barnes - who featured Natalie as one of her featured artists last year. Her debut album is released a week today, Monday April 15th.

BAD GRAMMAR - Tie Or Die [START 3:56]
http://facebook.com/badgrammaruk
Bad Grammar describe themselves as a "Girl/Boy Noise Duo From Manchester. They don't have a biog on their Facebook page and didn't send us any info about themselves but their next live dates are Thursday 25th April - DAda, Sheffield // w/ Nai Harvest, Playlounge, Yrrs. Monday 29th April - Wahlbar, Fallowfield, Manchester // w/ Fat Goth. Thursday 16th May - Dulcimer Bar, Chorlton, Manchester // w/ Those Rotten Thieves.

FRANK'S DAUGHTER - Fall Fully Backwards [START 6:44]
http://www.franks-daughter.com
Fall Fully Backwards’ is the debut single from Deptford-based duo Frank’s Daughter: Frank (vocals, guitar, keys) and Arthur (guitar, bass, programming), two British musicians who found themselves working in New York in the late noughties. The idea for the band was born in a Brooklyn bar over several bottles of red wine and many, many whiskies. The duo returned to London, but finding the urban environment uninspiring, they relocated to an out of season alpine hotel, taking a van full of recording equipment. There, they spent two months in total isolation, returning with a stack of songs that were finished in their Deptford studio. These songs form The Sound Of A Heart Unravelling, their debut album to be released on 3rd June. Their manager is no mean musician himself: Malcolm Carson from Tape The Radio.

HOPE & SOCIAL - Saints Alive [START 10:22]
http://hopeandsocial.com
Hope and Social are touring their two (yes TWO) new albums this April and May. The "All Our Dancing Days" tour begins in Bristol on the 23rd April with a show with dystopian gloom pop artist "She Makes War" and closes with Leeds/Manchester double headline shows with the awesome Louis Barabbas and the Bedlam Six. For more info, head over to hopeandsocial.com/gigs. "Bring The Happy" is a collaboration between Hope and Social and interactive arts collective Invisible Flock. A project that seeks to map the happiness of cities across the UK, Bring The Happy Live is touring the UK throughout 2013/14. http://www.bringthehappy.co.uk has all the performance and mapping deets. Come say hi, and leave a happy memory on theire website where all Hope and Social's music is available on a pay what you want basis.

THE ADAMSKI KID - Je Veux Une Cassette De Bowie [START 14:01]
http://www.facebook.com/theadamskikid
The musical incarnation of East London songwriter / producer Adam Karayiannis. Citing some of his musical influences as Kate Bush, Crystal Castles, Bloc Party and Joni Mitchell, his debut single release, ‘Mowgli’, demonstrated his ambitious intent to merge a wide range of musical styles. Adam launched his live show last year at The Great Escape Festival. His YouTube video for this single (on Lo Recordings) has already had over 6,000 views and the track was a Headphone Moment for Lauren Laverne recently on 6 Music.

BLACKBEARD'S TEA PARTY - The Valiant Turpin [START 16:47]
http://www.blackbeardsteaparty.com
Blackbeard's Tea Party (pictured above) aim to create "funky folk tunes, saucy songs and an infectious stage energy, mixing fiddles & squeezeboxes, guitar noise & synth bass, and a feast of international hand percussion to bring you an unforgettable folk-rock extravaganza". The band have built up a following around the country with performances at national folk festivals including Cambridge, Sidmouth, and Shrewsbury among others. This month they release their second album: Whip Jamboree, following previous recordings Heavens to Betsy (EP, 2009) and Tomorrow We’ll Be Sober’(LP, 2011). They are currently on their first UK headline tour of the UK:
Mon 8th Apr - LAMP, Leamington Spa
Tue 9th Apr - The Cumberland Arms, Newcastle
Thu 11th Apr - The Junction, Cambridge
Fri 12th Apr - The Croft, Bristol
Sat 13th Apr - Green Note, Camden
Sun 14th Apr - The Talking Heads, Southampton
Thu 18th Apr - Victoria Hall, Settle
Fri 19th Apr - The Greystones, Sheffield
Sun 21st Apr - Raven Folk Club, Chester

MOUSE DEER - I Can't Do Anything Else [START 20:24]
http://mousedeer.bandcamp.com
Mouse Deer is the alter-ego of Holly McIntosh, a Bristol - based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Since releasing her debut EP, 'The Mouse Deer EP', in December 2011, she has been playing around Bristol with a small band. 2013 promises a new release with a clutch of brand new tunes.

THE ANDROID ANGEL - Distant Star [START 24:07]
http://www.facebook.com/theandroidangel
The Android Angel is Paul Coltofeanu, a half-English, half-Romanian multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter from Surrey, whose fourth album Lie Back and Think of England is released today. Written during summer 2011 while volunteering on a farm in the Romanian mountains, on a Water Buffalo reserve in the Ukraine, sat on the banks of Varosliget Lake in Budapest and in the squares and parks of Berlin, Paul spent the following year recording the album in the downtime between writing and touring his first four EPs in his other incarnation as Free Swim. He self-releases all his music through his own label, Sex Farm Records and between the two projects has received airplay on BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 2, BBC 6Music and XFM in the UK, and has performed shows in England, Scotland, France, Germany and the United States.

ADAM WEDD - Monster Park [START 27:58]
http://www.facebook.com/adamwedd
2013 will finally see the release of Adam's long-awaited debut EP: People, Places, Things. It was recently recorded with producer Dave Lynch at Batbox Studios in Lewes and features JP of Nizlopi on Double Bass. Adams songs grapple, he tells us, "with matters of the heart and soul" and have apparently been dubbed as "Pensive Pop". His music has been used in TV adverts, short films and played on radio.. When Adam is not writing lyrics and performing his songs he works as Youth Worker in Kent, managing a buzzing Youth Cafe.

JAMES KELLY - Punch Drunk Loving [START 31:37]
http://www.jameskellyacoustic.co.uk
Described as a "mild mannered maestro" James Kelly will, we're told, "astonish you when he picks up that acoustic guitar". Hailing from the North of England, James Kelly delivers his songs in a voice "as powerful as any Mississippi blues man, backed by alternating walls of musical noise and a delicate picking style that brings a lump to the throat." According to his biog his songs are "as fragile as they are aggressive; fans of Kurt Cobain, Jeff Buckley and Otis Taylor will be hypnotised by James’s absolute possession of his music and performance." But why not download the mixtape and be the judge of all this yourself...

THE BLUE GIANT ZETA PUPPIES - Martians Don't Surf! [START 35:14]
http://thebluegiantzetapuppies.bandcamp.com
Taking their DIY recording philosophy from Joe Meek and musical influences from the likes of Screaming Lord Sutch, Roky Erickson, The Flaming Lips, The Moontrekkers and The Bonzos, The Blue Giant Zeta Puppies began peddling their chaotic brand of Psychedelia tinged, Echo smothered, Alt-Surf-Rock in early 2010. Brainchild of songwriter/producer BG, the 'Puppies were planned as a band with a variable line up, with members depending on whoever "...Happened to be passing...". Last year, listeners of Dandelion Radio voted their instrumental "The Wild Ride of Ichabod Crane" into the "Festive 50" at number 22. So far, The 'Zeta Puppies have selfreleased an album, two EPs and two singles, all of which can be found on their Bandcamp page. They are currently recording new material with a single due in the summer and a crowd funded vinyl album planned for later in the year.

SOFTBALL - Clark Kent [START 38:17]
http://softball.bandcamp.com
Softball is a new electronic indie-pop project from London-based singer-songwriter Paddy Johnston, of Paddy Johnston & The Love Explosion and Palomino Club. Everything on record is played by Paddy and produced in his home studio. Currently Paddy is recording more tracks, listening intently to early Mates of State and Dntel, and collecting Casiotone keyboards in preparation for launching the debut Softball EP in May, and getting together a live band for their first shows, which will also be in May. These will be announced on their Facebook page.

TAMARA WOESTENBURG feat. BENJAMIN HERMAN - How I Miss You [START 42:51]
http://www.tamarawoestenburg.com
Tamara Woestenburg sings and writes songs. She is, we're told "expressive, original and raw", presenting "different spheres and genres; from small and intimate, till ambitiously big; From folk through jazz to raw rock." Her biog continues: "Tamara's moving and exciting voice, her intense performance and personal songs, are supported by imaginative instrumentation and arrangements." This song comes from her EP (simply titled EP) is released in February 2012.

ECHOPARK - Teleportation [START 47:13]
http://www.facebook.com/theechopark
Echopark is the new project from London-based Italian musician Antonio Elia Forte, with his debut album 'Trees' set for release on 15th April through Enclaves. It was Born and almost entirely recorded with just a handful of microphones in a tiny rented room in Whitechapel. For Antonio it is something that "fights to be imperfect". It's a work full of errors, raw sounds and millions of voices overlapping, produced during days off and weekends. His goal was - he tells us poetically - "to capture and freeze the emotions that fill the air at the precise instant when a song comes to light." Teleportation is the first track to be taken from Trees, and is currently available to stream and download for free. Echopark will make the transition from bedroom to concert venue this spring; with a full band assembled.

PETER AND THE KIBBUTZNIK - Be Over [START 50:26]
http://www.facebook.com/peterandthekibbutznik
Newly formed oddball duo Peter and the Kibbutznik have already picked up plays on BBC Radio 1 from Huw Stephens - who dubbed their debut release Wolf it All as "two minutes of noisy, bonkers brilliance" and featured the band as his BBC Introducing Discovery. We've also enjoyed their music here on 6 Music's Introducing Mixtape. This lo-fi electro offering is their latest release, and like all of their music is available free from their Bandcamp page.

SPACESHIPS ARE COOL - Jupiter Jelly [START 53:20]
http://spaceshipsarecool.com
Spaceships Are Cool are - according to founding member Rob Spaceman - purveyors of Sci-fi Sunshine Pop and cheeky Folktronica, who use a quirky combination of analogue synths, acoustic guitars and glockenspiels to create an off-world Playground Of Sound. The band were created in 2007 by Lo-Fi producer and musician Rob Maddison (of Yunioshi fame) as a by-product of watching way too many Sci-Fi films and reading way too many children's fairy tales. Spaceships Are Cool have landed at locations all over the planet including Icelandic Airwaves, Glastonbury, NxNE, CMJ in New York, CMW in Toronto, Truck, Dot to Dot, cafes in Sweden, beaches in Latvia, medieval theatres in Sardinia - and for The Paralympics in Trafalgar Square. This track Jupiter Jelly is from their brand new Music for Space Cadets collection - available from all reputable online stores now.

BENJAMIN JOHN PENFOLD - Something in the Water [START 56:20]
https://soundcloud.com/benjimashey
Highly recommended to us by Michelle Hussey at BBC Introducing in Manchester, Benjamin John Penfold tells us he's a drummer who grew up in the North Wales countryside, and is currently studying on a Popular Music course at The University of Salford. "Now 20, I've been writing electronic and funk influenced compositions since I was 16. I'm currently finishing material for an EP which I will be releasing later this year.

These are the listings for Monday, 25th March 2013.

CLEAN BANDIT - Mozart's House [START 0:13]
http://cleanbandit.com
Extraordinary song with an equally extraordinary video which producer and Adam and I fell in love with on first listening. We then found it had already been uploaded to BBC Introducing three years ago, and that it had taken two and a half years to get released. In the interim Huw and Sarah Cox have been playing it on Radio 1, and we're proud to bring it to you as a killer opening track for ythis week's mixtape.

SECRET RIVALS vs ALPHABET BACKWARDS - Once More With Heart [START 4:15]
http://www.secretrivals.co.uk
Secret Rivals are a three-piece indie pop band based in Oxford. Their split boy-girl vocals sing, they tell us, of "fall-outs, secrets and despair, with hope and longing to put things right." In the past year they've played festivals including Bestival, Liverpool Sound City and Wychwood to promote their Make Do And Mend mini-album and followup EP Make Do And Mend (Part 2). A fan pledge campaign exceeded its target to fund the recording and production of their 10-song debut album Just Fall, which is now awaiting release. It includes the original mix of this song, although this version has been remixed by their Oxford contemporaries Alphabet Backwards.

THE LOOSE HEARTS - Morning Light (Rita) – [START 7:41]
http://www.facebook.com/TheLooseHearts
This four piece band formed at the University Of Liverpool towards the end of 2010 and at the beginning of this year released their debut album How We Are Now - from which this track is taken. They're currently writing and recording material for a second album and looking for new opportunities for playing live in 2013. Promoters, venues, festivals and entrepreneurial fans of their music are welcome to get in touch via their Facebook page.

VELCRO HOOKS - Girlfren' [START 10:19]
http://facebook.com/velcrohooks
"The faint origins of Velcro Hooks' formation was spawned in the distant city of Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. This freak meeting between England and Canada occurred in a gnarly hostel amidst an ocean of bed bug ridden mattresses; indubitably through the improbable mutual admirations of machetes and moustaches. This introduction inevitably led to a suitably ridiculous following fortnight; including high minded temples, volcanoes, many a cerveza and general ruffianship. Obviously these endeavours had to end at some point. Farewells were made and Jenner Blank and Thomas Mason made the return visit to their respective origins in Vancouver and Bristol. A year later they were reunited in the latter city with an additional pair of English miscreants called Dominic Mitchison and George Garratt." They've since released a debut single The Surfing Song on Howling Owl Records, to which this is hopefully the followup.

NANCY ELIZABETH - The Last Battle [START 12:35]
http://nancyelizabeth.co.uk
The Last Battle is the first single from Nancy Elizabeth Cunliffe's forthcoming third album, Dancing - due out in May. It’s her first new material since her 2009 LP Wrought Iron and, her record company tells us, "more upbeat than anything she’s recorded in half a decade... a magnificent introduction to the new album - a soaring, celestial-soprano array that recalls Ennio Morricone and Arthur Lee, building to an irresistible climax. Like its parent album in miniature, it’s a trove of pure musical delights, all recorded in the singer’s tiny Manchester flat". She plays London's Vortex Jazz Club this Tuesday March 26th with a full band to test the new material and is also performing and speaking as part of a TEDx University of Manchester event a couple of days later, at the Manchester Museum on Thursday March 28th.

BIRDBATH - Don’t Talk With Your Mouth Open [START 16:55]
https://www.facebook.com/birdbathband
About: Rock band from Bristol. Guitar, guitar, bass, drums: formed 1994. Members: Tim Gibbons, Simon Hewett, Ben Heal, Luke Tagney. Biography: some of us met at school and switched skateboards for guitars. Tim is a carpenter, Simon is a plumber, Luke is a sound engineer on Deal or No Deal and Ben is writing a PhD on William Burroughs. We like scatological jokes and Touch and Go Records circa 1994. Band interests: knitting, amateur plastic surgery, dressing up as old women. Their first album Birth took 10 years to complete. Their second, And Then, was recorded live in one day. Both are available from Bristol micro-label Ingue Records.

SWAMI BARACUS - Way Of The Dragon [START 19:24]
http://facebook.com/swamibaracus
This is the latest single from good friend of the show Swami Baracus. We last spoke to him on my Saturday programme when he played T In The Park last Summer. His Introducing classic "The Recipe" was produced by Zaheer, won them both a place on the Radio 1 Playlist and is now the title track of Baracuda's latest mixtape. This latest single shows him stepping up to new levels of eloquence: fast-flowing, sharp-witted, warm, eloquent, sharp and self-knowing - and I'd warmly recormmend the excellent video to this song.

ORANGE FROM THE BLUE - And We Danced [START 22:24]
https://soundcloud.com/orange-from-the-blue
Orange From The Blue is the project of Tim Phillips in Broadstairs plus assorted featured vocalists. Up until 18 months ago Tim ran my own business but had to close it due to the prevailing economic situation. The upside is that this has given him the time to start making music. He modestly claims "I have no singing voice of my own, so I use guest vocalists on my tracks. This one features a vocal loop - edited to fit - from a freebie disc given away with a music magazine. It evolved quite quickly over a couple of hours one Sunday night when there was nothing on TV so I messed around with some music instead. Being in quite a chilled mood I just imagined two people dancing slowly all through the night on a deserted old bandstand. Producing these tracks is a learning curve at the moment, but I'm loving every minute of it and working on new stuff all the time."

VASCO DA GAMA - Brigadiers [START 26:08]
http://www.vascodagamalive.bandcamp.com
The Reservoir blog once quipped that if "instruments could smile, the guitars of Vasco Da Gama would have grins as wide as the Mersey." This powerful and innovative four-piece are longstanding favourites on this show, and Brigadiers is the opening track ontheir new EP Geography, due out on April 22nd. They play Dada Bar in Sheffield this Thursday March 28th and The Village night at Camp and Furnace in their hometown of Liverpool on Saturday (30th).

THESE CURIOUS THOUGHTS - Brain In A Jar [START 29:12]
http://www.thesecuriousthoughts.com/
Sean Dunlop and Jim Radford were originally the main songwriters for Detroit-based five piece Shock of the Cold. However love tore them apart (in a good way - family commitments, the responsibilities of adulthood, etc) and the band broke up when Jim returned to his native Kent in the South East of England. For the last six years, in the absence of a live-performing band, Sean and Jim have continued to craft songs by long distance like high-tech pen pals. To date they have written over 100 songs and released several albums under the project name of These Curious Thoughts.

SATURDAY SUN - Like a Stray [START 32:28]
http://www.saturdaysunmusic.co.uk
Saturday Sun are Alex Hedley (guitar and vocals), Bill Merrick (guitar), Alec Harrison (Bass) and Luke Kill (Drums). "Alex" we're told "with his sublime and powerful vocals combines a wonderful songwriting partnership with Bill where they create charming and affective music that strike an emotional chord with the listener." You can verify these claims for yourself by checking out last year's Seagull EP on their Bandcamp, this newer recording on our current mixtape, and on their debut album which is due out next month. Their busy date sheet includes numerous club gigs in London and three shows in April opening for The Fossil Collective in Brighton, Bournemouth and Bristol.

HITCHCOCK BLONDE - Sexy Like You [START 37:24]
http://www.hitchcockblondeband.com
Hitchcock Blonde are a 4 piece indie punk rock band from London, fronted by singer Ella Grace. Their latest EP Five Pounds has, we're told, "seen them earning comparisons to such bands as Skunk Anansie, Hole, Foo Fighters, and more". They'll be releasing their second single, Animal, at the end of April. At the moment they are recording new tracks for a late summer 2013 release. Hitchcock Blonde will soon be announcing dates and venues for their June UK tour - please check their website for updates.

THE FOLK REMEDY - Jack And Mac [START 40:27]
http://www.thefolkremedy.com
"We are a three piece folk/indie group, comprising of band members Matt Whoriskey, Maria Bonner and Rob Ryle, formed in Manchester, England in 2012. Matt, originally from Derry, Ireland, has been writing and playing music for more than a decade. He has lived in Manchester for four years, where he hosts a regular open mic night at the Bay Horse in the popular Northern Quarter. Rob Ryle, the only English-born member of The Folk Remedy, Ryle, from Bolton, has played in a number of bands over the years after starting out with the psychedelic Jesus Franco. Maria Bonner also hails from Derry, Ireland though she has lived in Manchester for more than a decade. A classically trained violinist, she is also an accomplished piano and bass player. We've been on with Michelle Hussey on BBC Manchester and also on the Liam Bradford show. Thanks to the powerhouse of twitter, we've fortunately been able to meet many bloggers/radio DJs online, who have given us so much exposure in the past number of months."

THE GANG - Mania [START 42:30]
http://www.thegangband.co.uk
"We're a raw three piece with big hooks consisting of brothers Eric Tormey (Vocals, Guitar), Jimi Tormey (Vocals, Drums) and close friend Joseph Hunt (Bass). Formed in 2011 and based in Canterbury, we have played shows all around London, Sussex and our home county of Kent. We've also had airplay on BBC 6 Music, BBC Kent, Absolute Radio and on independent radio stations in both the UK and the US." Mania is the opening track on their free EP BLVDEVARD available via their Bandcamp page.

JIMMY DAVIS - A Prayer [START 44:36]
http://www.jimmydavisdavis.com
This month saw the release of Jimmy's official video for this single. "I feel this is my most important work to date" he says "in terms of the message that is embodied in my music. My prayer is for the world to hear this song. Not for any rubbish egotistical, popularity-driven, fame-craving, attention-seeking nonsense. But because there's a need for an awakening in the consciousness of humankind, and I hope my art will help to encourage and inspire the beginnings of a new dawn. Get in touch with the organisations that this message is sure to resonate with such as Oxfam, Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace etc. Strength in numbers is our only hope. Thank you. I Love you. And if you don't watch or share the video ... I still love you."

ALAN BONNER - Talia [START 48:58]
http://wwwalanbonnermusic.com/
Alan Bonner is a singer-songwriter based in London. Talia - an ode to his best friend and drinking partner of the same name - comes from his current 2nd album Balladeer - available now on itunes and via his website. Said album is, we're told, "bursting with pathos-filled ballads that are earnest, beautifully crafted and laced with nostalgic yearning for a simpler time". Having toured extensively Europe-wide in recent years, Alan ends this month's run of UK dates at Zigfrid Von Underbelly in London this Wednesday (March 27th) before heading off for his first US Tour in May. He is currently looking for management and label representation.

BENJAMIN MASON - Oh To Be A Drifter [START 52:15]
http://soundcloud.com/benjamin-mason
Online information about Benjamin is sparse, to say the least, and when we asked him to email us a little about himself and his music he sent the following: "As the legend goes, Benjamin Mason was reared by wild wolves in the weird West Wales woods. This upbringing led him to reject the human concept of genre. Expect the unexpected. Benjamin has a new album of songs from his One Song A Day period coming up in the next month and another more eclectic band album due in the summer."

OLD MAN DIODE & RICK HOLLAND Ft. CHRIS JAMES - Still Silver [START 55:54]
http://www.facebook.com/oldmandiode
Old Man Diode and Rick Holland met in the midst of a haze of London music making, smoke and petrol fumes in the first years of the new millennium. A coterie of young musicians and artists lived a blurred city life under a loose banner of fresh collaboration and partying. This was a generation that started sharing and distributing home-made demos and gigs, and music began shifting from the shiny coated wrapper towards more and more easily shared worlds. After ten years of crossing paths in bands, workshops and cross-genre collaborations OMD and Rick Holland decided to officially join forces for the ‘Diode + Rick Holland featuring…’ series, to showcase the experience of ten years of open source experimentation along with, we're told, "the unique inputs of a dazzling array of co-writing vocalists. Giants from the development of UK dancefloor styles join forces with lesser known voices to present a story of mixing worlds, and a fresh challenging new sound."

These are the listings for Monday, 18th March 2013.

CLUB SMITH - Beautiful & Useless [start 0:12]
http://www.clubsmith.co.uk
These are exciting times for Club Smith. They are about to do their first European gig, are working on a publishing deal and experimenting with a ‘revolving-door’ of new members – not least since their drummer Vijay left to join Kaiser Chiefs. You can see how these experiments are panning out when play the Cockpit in Leeds on April 6th. Alternatively, check out the live video they’ve put together at http://youtube.com/joinclubsmith

ANNA CORCORAN - The Show [start 3:46]
http://soundcloud.com/annacorcoran
In keeping with the fine musical heritage of the city, we feature many superb young artists from Liverpool on the Mixtape. Anna Corcoran is no exception. This track is taken from her debut EP, Anything Better. With Anna’s live performances creating a stir, she recently sold out the Roldwalde Suite at Liverpool's Philharmonic Hall. 2013 Summer tour dates are currently being compiled.

THE CUT THROAT RAZORS - Dr. Gelati & The Lemon Garden [start 06:38]
http://www.thecutthroatrazors.co.uk
A sharp dressed, Glasgow based, 8-piece, The Cut Throat Razors are fronted by the energetic and theatrical Scott Crawford. This is the title track from their first album - the wonderfully-titled Dr Gelati and the Lemon Garden, which they launched at Stereo in their hometown at the end of last year. According to the band, it taps into 007 mania – with a cinematic Barryesque groove exploding into a crazed Balkan polka.

EMBERHONEY - Smoke [start 11:55]
http://www.facebook.com/Emberhoney @emberhoney
Formed in Brighton in 2011, Emberhoney are singer-songwriter Taylor Madison Damion, guitarist/producer John ‘The Baron’ Kent and bass-player Ben King. SMOKE – which the band describe as Indie Noir - is their debut EP, released via their own Honeytone Recordings label. The trio are currently preparing to record an album and seeking a permanent drummer.

DEATH RATTLE - The Blows [start 16:08]
http://www.deathrattle.tv
‘The Blows’ is the follow-up single to London-duo Death Rattle's debut EP HE&I, released in October 2012. With much of the band’s music written and recorded at their own pop-up studio in a derelict 17th century abbey in France, they have now finished recording their second EP Fortress, which is due out in April. This will be followed by a European tour in May revisiting some of the countries they played on their last tour, including Germany, Romania, Hungary, Belgium, Holland and, of course, the UK. Keep an eye on their website for dates.

DRUNK MULE - Sunshine Stoners [start 19:43]
http://drunkmule.bandcamp.com
Glenrothes duo Drunk Mule have been together for about 3 years, during which time Rich and Steve have become firm friends of my various shows and my Fresh On The Net blog. To date they’ve released two albums – Crash Test Y'self and I Built A Death Ray – plus various EP's. Album Number 3 is currently in the works, under the working title of Self-Harmin' Voodoo Doll. Their songs are available via bandcamp – all you have to do is name your price.

GREENCLOUD & EROS - W.A.R. [start 23:25]
https://soundcloud.com/greencloud-1
GreenCloud (Joe, 21) and Eros (Phil, 21) are two music lovers from Kent who describe their collective style as Hippie Hop. Inspired by funk, soul, and hip hop artists. and chart music, they began to make their own songs with an emphasis on meaningful lyrics, while addressing current issues that fans can directly relate to. It's a great blend of talents and having followed their progress via BBC Introducing for a while now, it seems to me that W.A.R. is their tightest, angriest and most focussed work to date.

TEDDY QUICK - It Ain't Enough To Know That You’ll Miss Me When You Go [start 27:56]
https://soundcloud.com/teddyquick
Now based in Norwich, Teddy Quick formerly fronted the London outfit Rev78. He left the band at Christmas to go solo. "I'm a huge fan of songwriting as an art form" he says. "I wanted it to be just me and my 12 string guitar." Citing Roy Orbison, ELO, Lennon and Bowie as influences, he is planning to record a debut EP, and has his debut gig tomorrow Tuesday March 19th at The Birdcage in Norwich.

BIRDPEN - A Thousand Followers [start 31:01]
http://www.birdpen.com
A singer with Archive, Dave Pen has collaborated with numerous musicians and regularly tours and plays Europe. BirdPen is his project with longtime friend and Mike Bird. This track comes from Global Lows, their second album, recorded in Stockport with producer Jim Spencer. Dave and Mike launch their album with a hometown at Roxx in Southampton this Thursday, March 22nd.

JOHNNY KOWALSKI AND THE SEXY WEIRDOS - Night Before [start 36:25]
http://www.sexyweirdos.co.uk
Johnny Kowalski and the Sexy Weirdos (pictured above) first began to make their presence felt on the Birmingham scene in early 2010, honing their unique brand of musical lunacy in backstreet boozers and underground venues. 2012 proved to be something of a breakthrough, with a main stage slot at Nozstock, 2 sets at Boomtown (on the Hanging Garden stage), plus sell out shows at Hare and Hounds and The End in Birmingham. They also played many small festivals around the UK plus shows in London, Manchester and Bristol, and are currently taking bookings for 2013.

HELENA DUKIC - Grow Up [start 40:47]
http://soundcloud.com/helenadukic
Helena is 24 year old songwriter from Croatia/ Slovenia, currently based in London. She comes from a classical background, having studied classical music at Cambridge. She started writing songs a few years ago, all of which have a homespun feel: they are recorded and produced on a laptop in her bedroom. Head to her soundcloud page to hear more.

AFFAIRS - Cressida [start 42:49]
http://soundcloud.com/affairsband
From Hull, Affairs comprise Liam Grindell, Daniel Parker and James Robinson, Michaeal Bradnam and Jack Richards, who met while studying at university in the city. In their relatively short life, they have already supported the likes of Alt-J. They have a show tomorrow at the Linnet and Lark in Hull, followed by outings in Cambridge, Norwich, Lancaster and London.

RUN/LUCKY/FREE - Red Blood, Blue Heart [start 46:46]
http://www.runluckyfree.bandcamp.com
Sadly, Run/Lucky/Free are no more, having gone their separate ways having been together since 2009. They have, however, continued to make music. Singer Rachael Cormack and guitarist Daniel Crichton write together, and have already gone on to support the likes of Marika Hackman. Bassist Sam Dick and Daniel Crichton, meanwhile, play together in a newly formed band called Stampede Road.

CONSCIOUSNESS CLUB - Lay Low [start 50:34]
http://www.consciousnessclub.com
Consciousness Club came together while working for north London music charity, Music for People. By day they’d perform to older folk and people with disabilities in homes and day centresl; by night, they’d step out on the capital’s live circuit. Singer and guitarist Peter Crockett penned this, their first single. He and Jake Chisholm, Patch Benjamin, Barry Stilwell and Tommy Ca$h are now looking for an agent to secure more high-profile gigs.

SHEMAKESWAR - Never Was (CAJITA Remix) [start 54:15]
http://www.shemakeswar.com
She Makes War is - you'll remember - "the gloom-pop solo project of Laura Kidd" - multi instrumentalist, visual artist, digital polymath and longstanding friend of my 6 music Introducing shows. Her debut album Disarm was released in September 2010 to high praise, and led to support slots with Midge Ure, Chris T-T, Viv Albertine and Tom Williams and the Boat. Laura makes some of the best use of digital media I've seen and is starting up a digital DIY collective My Big Sister. As Shemakeswar she is currently touring with Josie Ghost, formerly of King Blues, and will soon be commencing work on album number 3.

These are the listings for Monday, 11th March 2013.

TANKUS THE HENGE - Recurring Dream [start 0:13]
http://tankusthehenge.com
Tankus the Henge (pictured above) are six gentlemen outcasts who specialise in what they describe as "having an anarchic good time." They are currently touring the country with "their high octane live show… (which) will break your heart, lift your spirits and leave you dancing". Their selftitled debut album took three years to finish, and gets its launch in London at The Lexington this Wednesday March 13th.

SPARROWHAWKS - Living Man’s Disease [start 04:28]
http://sparrowhawks.bandcamp.com
Sparrowhawks are an alt/folk. pop four piece from the North Wales border and Living Man’s Disease is taken from their new EP - available as free download from their website. You can catch them live this Wednesday March 15th in Chester at the Rake & Pikel, and in Wrexham on March 28th at The Royal Oak and April 25th at the Focus Wales Festival.

THE BOO-HOORAY THEORY - Helen Lane [start 08:08]
http://theboohooraytheory.bandcamp.com
Songwriters Ben Heneghan and Ian Lawson somehow managed to take thirty years to release a first album and Follow The Gleam has been worth every minute of the wait. Several of those years must have been devoted to this track Helen Lane alone - and it captured my heart and ears within the first ten seconds. The Boo-Hooray Theory is the 12-piece band assembled by Ben and Ian to perform this outstanding collection of songs and occasionally they even manage to herd these disparate musicians together for a live show. Although these events are, they say, "vanishingly rare" our heroes are nevertheless "open to offers from anyone with a big enough stage".

PARK PLANET - The Youngest [start 13:04]
http://www.facebook.com/parkplanet
Glasgow's Park Planet consist of guitarist and frontman Graham Duff, close blood relative Gordon Duff on bass and drummer Leon Breakey. Although they've been registered with BBC Introducing since July 2010 they seem to have escalated activities around the end of last year, posting tunes on Soundcloud that caught the ear of music blogs such as Instantfilter, Musicyouneed and my own Fresh On The Net. They began work on their debut album in earnest last month at Graham's studio The Outhouse. "First day in the studio finished" he posted on February 16th. "Two songs down, twenty one to go."

YEAH & SHE HAS RED LIPS TOO - (Get Down And) Disconnect [start 16:40]
http://yeahandshehasredlipstoo.com
How great to hear new music from so many old friends this week. Jez and Caz were formerly known to 6 Music listeners as Molloy - whose splendid debut single Hoxton Hips we featured back in April 2008 on Fresh On The Net. With a change of style and a change of sound they've taken their name of their new project from a David Lynch painting. "Yeah And She Has Red Lips Too’s post-apocalyptic new wave rock" they tell us "carries you away on a dark tide of what it is to be human". This single was launched on March 7th in Islington, London.

SHELLSUIT - Death Or Bongo [start 20:47]
http://www.shellsuit.co.uk
I'm also a longstanding fan of the radical Merseyside trio Shellsuit and their 2010 masterpiece of laconic understatement, the selfproduced Walton Prison Blues album. The band have not been idle over the last two years and Death Or Bongo bowled me over with its ambitious expansion of their sound. Bass guitar ! Funk Grooves ! Electric guitar riffs ! Piano chords ! Tempo changes! While all the while retaining Shellsuit's trademark elliptical edge to the lyrics. As a first single, this bodes extremely well for the band's forthcoming second album Wednesday Morning Bootle Strand. I can't wait.

NATALIE ROSS - Feels Just Like I’m 17 Again [start 24:30]
http://www.natalieross.co.uk
Natalie Ross was one of the first artists ever played on 6 Music Introducing back in 2007 and I've followed her career with interest ever since. Feels Just Like I’m 17 Again comes from her new 5-track EP due out in May called The Thrill of it All. Like Shellsuit, Natalie hasn't let the grass grown under her feet and this record features her newly-recruited band and Alt-J producer Charlie Andrew, no less, behind the controls.

TINHEART - A Million Winters [start 27:52]
http://tinheart.bandcamp.com
Tinheart - or tiNhearT as he prefers to style it - is the solo project of Piers Blewett - songwriter and frontman with Brighton's Stick In A Pot. This comes from his EP "tiNhearteD" which was recorded in Piers's bedroom on a borrowed guitar and released last month on his own Sad Sentry Records imprint. It represents a conscious effort to "write concise songs with plenty of melody". Gigs - including the Brighton Fringe Festival - are in the pipeline, along with plans for a followup EP.

GLASS CAVES - Muscle [start 30:18]
https://www.facebook.com/glasscavesmusic
Pontefract five-piece Glass Caves, we're told, "fuse agitated rhythms, yo-yoing guitars and dissonant keyboard sounds with vocals that splinter then soar through their songs. They come at you like a band channelling the spirit of American alternative bands, such as Local Natives and Fleet Foxes, through a very British filter to produce perfectly formed morsels of ballsy alt-rock." So now you know. They've just passed 4,000 likes on Facebook and sold 5,000 copies of their selftitled EP - and you'll certainly need to book early for their headline at Fibbers in York on April 12th.

YAKURI CABLE - Line of Sight [start 33:44]
https://soundcloud.com/yakuri-cable
Yakuri Cable is is a Japanese funicular line in Takamatsu, Kagawa. It's also an indie/synth/pop band formed in Glasgow early last year by Andy, Ross, Jo and Chris who had alrady met as bandmates in the lineup of some previous - and unspecified - local outfit. By the end of the year they had composed five songs, and recorded their EP Beginnings (on which this is the opening track) at Green Door studios in Glasgow. The EP is now available from Bandcamp and they hope to make their live debut in April.

ABIGAILHUBBARD - People Watching [start 38:12]
http://soundcloud.com/abigailhubbard
Abigail Hubbard is, we're told, "a refreshingly original solo artist who collaborates tastes of trip-hop, jazz, classical and folk to create a ensemble of humbling melodies and incomparable beats." Her lifelong career began "as a music loving embryo tapping beats on her mother's navel" and developed through shouting at the sea at age 7, dancing around to Mary Poppins, and first picking up a guitar on her 11th birthday. Since recording her People Watching EP, from which this track is taken, Abigail has been working with a full time band, who will begin recording a debut album this summer with producer The Assembly Worker. Their next gig is in London at The Rattlesnake a week on Tuesday, March 19th.

HEART-SHIPS - Five Forks Of Lightning [start 41:32]
http://facebook.com/HeartShips
Leeds’ six-piece Heart-Ships will release their debut EP1 both digitally and on 12" vinyl on April 29th. By way of an incentive, if you pre-order it from their website you get a free download of this track Five Forks of Lightning. I'd like to tell you a bit about this band but they give away absolutely nothing of themselves - or about themselves - online. Their Facebook contains only descriptions of their music by various pundits, for example "BBC INTRODUCING: Absolutely Brilliant." Hmm. Thanks for sharing. They play a London show at Camden Barfly on April 22nd and Live At Leeds on May 4th.

WINTER SON - Acid Rain [start 44:50]
http://www.iamwinterson.com/
"I make dance music halfway between classic house and goth inspired post-punk using a studio jammed with old analogue equipment" says Manchester musician Thomas Ragsdale - aka Winter Son - and also one half of Ghosting Season. His Winter Son manifesto is so evocatively written it bears repeating: "I play live using a battered 30 year old TR-808 drum machine and a host of percussion pads, and am sometimes joined on stage by Jozef K. The name 'Winter Son' comes from those cold Northern English nights walking around Manchester to the sounds of Depeche Mode, Bauhaus, The Cure, and old Chicago house tracks. It comes from immersing yourself in a darkened room packed with sweaty bodies moving as one to the sound of the bass drum and synth line..." Now that's what I call an artist biog. It doesn't have to be factual but it does need to be interesting. The debut Winter Son EP is due for release this Summer on Sasha's label Last Night On Earth.

BROMHEADS - Gonna Let You Melt [start 47:00]
http://www.bromheads.tv
At the end of last year we featured Bromheads' Holding The Gun on the mixtape - their first "official" recording with the new duo lineup - having previously released a dozen singles for free download. They describe themselves as the "Sheffield lad duo" of Tim Hampton and Dan Potter, "a 50’s inspired garage band" formed in 2009 from their acclaimed previous trio lineup as Bromheads Jacket. This track comes from their new album Choro which they'll release on April 15th, and promote by playing 11 cities in 12 days, finishing in Stoke on April 26th. Visit their website for full details.

SWIMMING IN SPEAKERS - Teach Yourself [start 49:16]
http://swimminginspeakers.bandcamp.com
I first played the Saranac Lake duo Swimming In Speakers shortly after they formed and released their eponymous debut EP in early 2009 - two songs from which ended up on Grey’s Anatomy. The band consist of Meadow Elizabeth on vocals and Christopher Clarke provided pretty much everything else that you hear on this languid, captivating track from their longawaited debut album Guessing The Others - which finally arrived this year at the beginning of February.

LEAVING ATLANTIS - The Hill [start 53:12]
http://www.facebook.com/leavingatlantis
Our final track in this week's mixtape also comes from a boy-girl duo formed in 2009 - in this case by Danish lyricist and singer Signe Gry Thorup, who joined forces with the Finnish-born, London based drummer and producer Vesa Haapanen to create Leaving Atlantis. This track comes from their debut album Strange New World which was recorded in a variety of locations (London, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Lapland and Zimbabwe) and using a variety of supplementary musicians (Wayne Urquhart, Andy Parkin, Tom Marriott and more). It was recorded, mixed and mastered by James Towler. They're already planning a followup album for this summer and play a live show in Copenhagen next month.

These are the listings for Monday, 4th March 2013.

CARA WINTER - Picking Up The Pieces [Starts 00:42]
http://www.soundcloud.com/cara-winter
We enjoyed Cara Winter's earlier song Butterfly on the mixtape last September, but to these ears this material moves her up into a different league altogether. Cara is a 25 year old pianist, vocalist and composer based in East Anglia on the north-east borders of Essex and Cambridgeshire. She described herself to us last year as "A shy self-taught pianist who has recently started experimenting with live shows featuring a string quartet" but there's nothing shy or tentative about her incandescent performance on this track. She's put out two selfreleased albums to date and has just completed album number three: Do You Have A Heart - a collaboration with cellist and string arranger Nick Cooper who has worked with Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel and Goldfrapp among others.

SEATTLE YACHT CLUB - Same Old Questions [Starts 05:02]
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Seattle-Yacht-Club/355391661145118
Seattle Yacht Club are from Liverpool, Southport (or possibly both) and consist of multi-instrumentalists Tom Dale and Denis Brice. The duo share a bond approaching brotherhood, having grown up next door to each other, and indeed their playing shares much of that telepathic tightness often heard in bands of siblings. Having played & made music together in various bands over the years they've gradually refined their sound and shed superfluous musicians from their lineup to end up with Brian Eno's ideal of the "small, mobile intelligent unit."

CYMBIENT - Trailers and Gliders [Starts 07:34]
http://soundcloud.com/cymbient
Cymbient is the musical project of Trinidad born, Cardiff based artist and musician, Andy Fung. Andy's previous musical incarnation Derrero recorded 4 Peel Sessions and toured with Super Furry Animals, Grandaddy, Gorky's Zygotic Mynci and Sebadoh. Cymbient's 2008 album, Out On The Waves, received 6 Music airplay from, among others, Shaun Keaveny, Gideon Coe and, er, Tom Robinson This track Trailers and Gliders comes from Andy's latest full length offering I Saw Energy and you can see examples of his visual artworks and psychedelic painting at andyfung.co.uk

RUEN BROTHERS - Aces [Starts 09:42]
http://ruenbrothers.com
A great sounding track from Ruen Brothers - with a wonderful classic garage rock groove, and a bravura vocal performance. This is the kind of pared-down, deceptively simple song structure that formed the backbone of early 1960s rock'n'roll. Songwriting like this has been an increasingly lost art with the subsequent rise of first multitrack and then computer-assisted recording, but this band manage it effortlessly. The band are actual brothers Rupert and Henry Stansall - on lead guitar and lead vocals respectively - whogrew up in the industrial badlands of Scunthorpe before moving south to seek fame and fortune in London. They come highly recommended not only by Katy Noone from BBC Introducing in Humberside but also the ever-reliable Dean Jackson who presents BBC Introducing's legendary East Midlands show The Beat

SUPERMASSIVEELEPHANT - Pterodactyl [Starts 12:24]
http://facebook.com/itsanelephant
Elephant (or SupermassiveElephant, UKElephant, TheElephant, ElephantInTheRoom or ItsAnElephant, depending on which of his websites you visit) is an interesting creature hand-reared by multi-instrumentalist/producer/songwriter Alex Hall from Milford-on-sea near Lymington in the New Forest. Armed with a laptop and a modest collection of instruments, he spends his time piecing together a collection of recordings inspired by his love of experimental indie, 60’s surf pop and more contemporary lo-fi electronic music. Alex is also a passionate enthusiast of Apple computers and an ex school music teacher with strong skills in Logic Pro and Garageband.

GYMNAST - Build A Boat [Starts 16:14]
http://www.gymnastband.com
One of my great regrets in recent indie music has been the demise of the immensely fresh and promising Edinburgh band Mayhew - who not only featured regularly on my 6 music Introducing shows but also won themselves a place on the Acoustic Stage in the Glastonbury Emerging Talent Competition in 2011. However the financial and logistical pressures of keeping a five piece band together on the more interesting fringes of the record industry are immense, and over the following year the band finally ceased to be. So imagine my delight - after choosing Build A Boat by Manchester duo Gymnast for this mixtape purely on the basis of what came out of the speakers - to learn that this new band consists of core Mayhew members Cathy Wilcock (on lead vocals and guitar) and Chris Lyon (on, er, synth, cello, guitar, backing vocals, programming… you name it). It's a case of Mayhew is dead, long live Gymnast, and we await more music from them with keen interest.

UNIVERSAL DISAPPOINTMENT SPONGE - Lost Art Of Steeplejacking [Starts 19:52]
http://www.facebook.com/UniversalDisappointmentSponge
Easy listening it ain't, but giving your spine and ears an enjoyable jolt, it's hard to beat "The Lost Art Of Steeplejacking" by the splendidly named Universal Disappointment Sponge - who accurately describe themselves as "Post Modern Art Rock Noise Nonsense from the very bowels of Essex". Namely the towns of Rayleigh and Leigh near Southend On Sea. The group features members of a number of Essex based bands - including Southend based satirical noise wranglers Fashoda Crisis - "playing music loudly, but never playing in Essex". Them's the breaks I guess. It's challenging music, but always a thrill to discover great players making music as barkingly deranged as this. It's only a shame they weren't doing it ten years ago - John Peel would have adored their debut EP Time To Surrender Puny Earthlings, which you can hear in full on their Bandcamp page. They play Cardiff on March 31st

TALK TO ANGELS - Lead Balloon [Starts 22:16]
http://www.talktoangels.co.uk
Indie guitar rock is a universal language of which Bradford quartet Talk To Angels are clearly fluent speakers - having not only toured the US Eastern Seaboard for CMJ and played South By Southwest in Austin, but also played La Ferme Du Rock in France, Live At Leeds, and headlined their own ten date UK tour. The band's latest incarnation aims to move things up a gear with the release of their forthcoming debut album This Broken Home on March 22nd (band member Mickey Dale's birthday!) from which this single Lead Balloon is an advance taster. It can be pre-ordered from their Bandcamp page although a full-scale tour to promote it won't take place until at least May, due to family and other commitments.

SPARROW AND THE WORKSHOP - Shock Shock [Starts 26:09]
http://sparrowandtheworkshop.co.uk
Glasgow trio Sparrow & the Workshop release their new single ‘Shock Shock’ through Song By Toad Records on March 18th. It's the first new music we've heard form them since last year’s sophomore album Spitting Daggers and a first taster from the 11-track followup Murderopolis which is due in May. The group consists of vocalist Jill O’Connor, drummer Gregor Donaldson and Nick Packer on guitar, bass and, erm, something called a basstard. "We've never done an album launch before" they exclaim on Facebook "and now we're doing two. Cowabunga! The first one is in Mono, Glasgow (on May 8th) with support from the excellent Strike The Colours". Having supported the likes of Brian Jonestown Massacre, British Sea Power, The Lemonheads and taken to the stage at Glastonbury, Green Man and Bestival to name a few, the band make a return performance as session guests on The Marc Riley show on 6 Music on Monday March 18th - the very day this single hits the digital shops.

WILL AND THE PEOPLE - The Game [Starts 29:52]
http://www.willandthepeople.com
Will And The People describe themselves as "multigenre heavy chilled pop music... it's a reggae sandwich situation" After forming at Glastonbury festival 2010 the band immediately moved into a house together where the recorded the majority of their second album 'Friends.' It has been a very busy two years for the band relentlessly touring from Australia to Cambodia and collaborating with artists ranging from Passenger to Ed Sheeran. They've had a top 10 single in Holland which they followed up with a sold out tour. "Currently" we're told, "the band, the magician and the producer all live under the same roof.. which means they can afford to be spontaneous, as they can read each other very well… the band don't really argue, and they work together... because of this they are doing very well this year.. they have managed to book all their own gigs and do all their own paperwork (nearly)....

LITTLEMORES - Blue Eyes Black [Starts 32:53]
http://www.facebook.com/littlemores
Littlemores have built a live reputation in their native York and the surrounding county for their high-energy live performances. To my ears they're unlike any other guitar-based indie band working in this musical or geographical area because of the sharp, thoughtful lyrics of firebrand frontman Conor Hirons. Few bands could turn a song about domestic violence into a riproaring set-closer, yet that's excatly what Littlemores have done with Blue Eyes Black. Three weeks ago they posted a new song called "Have You Seen The News Master" on their Soundcloud page. "Very Billy Bragg" sniffed a user known as The Vineland. "We take that as a great compliment" reorted Littlemores. And so they should.

CREATURE THAT BITES - Hole in the Sky [Starts 36:19]
http://www.creaturethatbites.com
Keyboardist and drummer Christian Barton joined forces with bass/guitar player George Haworth in April 2012 to write, sing, record, produce and release their own music. "Having been music men for many years" they say, "we decided it was time to get our act together, so to speak. We hope others enjoy and get a sense of the fun we had putting this work together". This track is taken from the band's self-titled concept album which came out last Autumn, from which we already featured their debut single Plane to Caracas on the Introducing Mixtape at the beginning of this year.

DUOLOGUE - Push It [Starts 39:59]
http://www.duologuemusic.co.uk
The first incarnation of Duologue deserved its name back when vocalist Tim Digby-Bell and techno DJ/programmer Toby Leeming were a two-piece indie/electronic band gigging around London and the festival circuit. They've since recruited longstanding friends Seb Dilleyston (violins) Ross Stone (bass) and Toby Lee (lead guitar) to form a fully-fledged band. They just released their long-awaited debut album Song & Dance this week on Killing Moon Records, from which this single is taken. It also includes a re-recorded version of Talk Shop - a track that we first featured on 6 Music Introducing back in December 2007. They play a short run of UK dates next week in Leeds, Sheffield, Nottingham and Bristol before heading off the Austin for South By Southwest 2013.

OWEN DUFF - Dying For The Money [Starts 46:30]
http://www.owenduff.co.uk
Northern-Ireland born, London-resident Owen Duff sings, plays piano, guitar, ukulele and drums. He also writes, records, produces and makes videos with a tendency, he says, "to prioritise unusual chord progressions & extended metaphors over most other things." He's released four EPs since 2006, and completed one (deliberately) unreleased album in 2008 after challenging himself to write and record 20 songs in four weeks. Six of those songs were reworked 15 months ago to form Owen's fourth EP Realityicide, on which this is the seventh, bonus, track. You can hear and buy the whole thing on his Bandcamp, which also includes a link to his various other web pages. We aprticularly recommend the vintage black and white promo clip for Dying For The Money on his YouTube channel.

FRANCIS LICKERISH - Broceliande [Starts 50:42]
http://www.secretgreen.co.uk
Back in the early 70s I was friends with Francis Lickerish (pictured above), whose band with Steve Stewart and Neil Kavanagh later went on to become the much-loved orchestral rock cult heroes The Enid. Francis and The Enid parted company in the early 80s, and to my great joy he's returned this year with one of the most original solo albums I've heard in ages called Far And Forgot: The Lost Lands. The music is a refinement of his trademark widescreen orchestral rock yet performed by members of a live gigging combo of multi instrumentalists. This is at its most surprising when they put down their guitars and play a pastoral gem like this one, Broceliande. However the album has an astonishingly wide range that includes full-on drums and electric guitars - as you can hear on his Secret Green website.

VASQUEZ - Pow [Starts 55:40]
http://vasquez.bandcamp.com/releases
Vasquez was originally three guys who met following a post on Gumtree by guitarist/founding member Ciaran Mckenna looking for band members. They named the band after a hard-as-nails, heavy-machine-gun-wielding badass character in the film Aliens. In December 2010 new permanent bassist Sean Quinn joined the band. Inspired by the likes of Talking Heads, Don Caballero, Torche, Steve Reich and Meshuggah the group has released two EP’s (EP1 and EP2) and gigged extensively around the UK. Their latest EP "EP-426" contains six tracks and was released in January 2013. Their next live booking is on April 13th at the Limbo Live night at The Voodoo Rooms in their hometown of Edinburgh.

These are the listings for Monday, 25th February 2013.

YOUR NEW ANTIQUE - Open Your Eyes [00:42]
http://yournewantique.co.uk
Like many a band before them, the Huddersfield Alt-Indie quartet Your New Antique formed over a few pints in the pub. Since then they have attracted the attention of the London-based production team of The Anial Farm and released four singles, including Chemistry which we included on this Mixtape last year. Open Your Eyes is set for release on March 11th.

JOSH HEALEY - When The Wind Blows [04:24]
http://joshhealey.co.uk
The first thing that strikes you about a Josh Healey record is the purity of his singing voice - which he modestly attributes to "listening to too much Simon & Garfunkel as a kid". That childhood was spent on Lerwick in the Shetland Islands, although he's currently based near Warrington in Cheshire. Josh (see photo, above) is currently gearing up for the release of his debut EP LifeBoats And Relationaships which was produced by Fred Kindt at Blueprint Studios in Manchester. It'll be available in digital and physical formats from March 18th and you can catch him live at The Boulevard in Wigan a week on Friday (March 8th).

BEN SEE - Moment.Sound.Blur. [07:35]
https://facebook.com/BenSeeMusic
We get sent something like 150 tracks every week and can fit fewer than twenty into each Introducing Mixtape. So every one of these tracks is exceptional enough to jump out of the pile for one reason or another. Even so, Moment.Sound.Blur. by Ben See towers head and shoulders everything else in the show for sheer freshness and downright originality. Of course many artists have been singing acapella with loopstations for years, but the results are often more notable for their sonic texture than for the quality of the compositions. But then Ben has a background in choral music, with influences ranging from Radiohead through to Benjamin Britten - and is definitely a man to watch. Not for the possibility of future fame - though that may come. But in my opinion his upcoming debut album could well be one of the most daring and musically adventurous records you'll hear all year.

KITE AND THE CRANE - London [11:16]
http://kiteandthecrane.bandcamp.com
Edinburgh based indie-folk trio Kite And The Crane are Emilia Hanna, Hannah Kitchen and Niki Dunne. They have been performing for less than a year and have already had to shake things up a bit: Emilia has just had a baby, so maternity cover comes in the form of Chris Lindsay (who sings on London) and Ally Aiken. Their next gig is at the Old Chain Pier in the Scottish capital on March 10th, followed by an appearance at Teviot on March 22nd. On the basis of this song, we keenly await their EP, which will be released in May.

SCREAMING MALDINI - The Awakening [15:43]
http://www.screamingmaldini.net
Sheffield's Screaming Maldini describe themselves as "genre-straddling, multi-instrumental six piece" and "all the pops, rolled into one". They've just completed a twelve-date UK tour to promote their newly released - and selftitled - debut album, and will be capping it with a hometown show this Saturday (March 2nd )at The Harley in Sheffield. And don't imagine things will end there. "Never content to stand still," they proclaim "the band can be found doing anything from performing in concert with a 40-piece orchestra, to unleashing a 30-strong singing flash-mob on an unsuspecting clothes shop in Sheffield!" And apparently all I could say was: "Wow!"

LEWDJAW X DANERO - Compleat [18:41]
http://facebook.com/lewdjawxdanero
Linda Serck from BBC Introducing In Berkshire recommended this track on my Saturday show this weekend. Both of us enjoyed a good on-air moan about the lack any information supplied by Lewdjaw X Danero, but since then, I'm happy to report, the "Description" section of their Facebook page has been updated. "GOOD LOOKING EUROPEAN RAPPER/PRODUCER DUO (20 SOMETHING) SEEKING AUDIENCE FOR GOOD TIMES AND POTENTIALLY MORE, MUST BE INTO HIP HOP, BEATS, & LAURA PALMER". Brilliant. The track's damn fine, too - but you don't need me to tell you something you can so plainly hear for yourselves.

MINA TINDLE - Lovely Day [21:41]
http://minatindle.com
Last September on the mixtape we featured a track called Bells from Mina Tindle's album Taranta on Believe Recordings. As a French singer with Spanish roots she's described on her website as "the new voice of the modern French pop dreamers". She didn’t start making music until her early twenties when she moved to New York. She completed the circle by returning to her native Paris to complete her debut album, which the 405 described as "an irresistible display of musical excitement which demands repeat listens". Lovely Day is Mina's new single and accompanied by reinterpretations from friends and fellow Frenchman Francois and the Atlas Mountains (Henry), Breton (Too Loud), Amateur Best (Lovely Day) and Typesun (Lovely Day), who all offer their own take on tracks from the album.

BISCUITHEAD & THE BISCUIT BADGERS - Dinosaurs [25:09]
http://biscuithead.co.uk
Sometimes I love bands because their music is so exquisitely crafted, and sometimes simply because it's irresitibly daft. In the case of the Moustache-Powered Tuba Cabaret of Biscuithead And The Biscuit Badgers it's both, and the band's lead vocalist and ukulele exponent Dean Murray was a guest on my show a couple of years ago. This new track comes with a superbly made stopmotion video by Kerrie McKinnon and the lyrics say it all: "How many children here have dreamed, in a bored hour, of riding through the playground on a dip-lo-do-cus?" A worthy followup to their highly recommended second album The Greatest Show On Toast.

THIRD PARTY - Room With A View [29:05]
http://thirdparty.bandcamp.com
This lovely tight and powerful Cardiff quartet formed in late 2011 around frontman Gruff Russell-Jones, who's been writing and recording music locally in various outfits for over ten years. This single was released in July last year via the Third Party Bandcamp page. The band are currently working on a double-A single as a followup with an album to follow - and play a hometown gig at The Moon Club on March 29th.

HYSTERICAL INJURY - Icebreak [32:20]
http://thehystericalinjury.co.uk
Longstanding favourites with Ruth Barnes and - let’s face it - all right-thinking fans of aggressive in-your-face lo-fi Avon-based attack-pop, Hysterical Injury (the definite article appears to be optional) consist of siblings Annie and Tom Gardiner. They grew up in Llandeilo, are now based in Bristol and Bath, and released their debut album DEAD WOLF SITUATION on Crystal Fuzz records in February 2012 thanks to part-funding by the Strummerville Foundation for New Music. They make a huge and splendid noise for just two people and you can buy the whole album via thehystericalinjury.co.uk – go on, you know you want to. They play Kollaps in Bristol on March 16th and Annie can also occasionally be found making music under her electronic side project name of Excellent Birds.

ALTERNATIVE DUBSTEP ORCHESTRA - Power [35:50]
http://facebook.com/AlternativeDubstepOrchestra
The Alternative Dubstep Orchestra (ADO) was set up in November 2010 as a collective of Birmingham based musicians and DJs aiming to bring a new live element to the dubstep world. They became the experimental resident collective of The Honeymoon Club, a monthly event at Birmingham’s Hare and Hounds. The core collective has features two drumkits, percussion, brass, strings and - of course - turntables. ADO is, they say, "a project, a philosophy and an evolving musical experiment. Expect interactive, improvisational, reworked and composed pieces, always with an orchestral twist." This single is their cover of a track by dubstep artist Skism.

THE HUBBARDS – Dog Bite [39:52]
http://thehubbards.co.uk
Hull quartet The Hubbards consist of Reuben Driver, Alex Green, Ronan Burns and Joe Orlowski - none of whose surnames, you may notice, is Hubbard. The beautifully photographed video for this single is currently in pride of place on their website, while the audio will be released on March 25th as a free download from their website. They have upcoming shows in Barnsley (March 15th) Leeds (March 16th) and a hometown show at Tofts on March 29th. Other than that they tell us nothing about themselves whatsoever.

THE WIND-UP BIRDS - 2 Ambulance Day [43:27]
http://thewind-upbirds.bandcamp.com
Mat Forrest, Oli Jefferson, Paul Ackroyd and Ben Dawson describe their group The Wind-Up Birds as "a belligerent independent band of Leeds-based noisy pop grumpsters". Despite existing "for aeons" - during which they released a string of EPs and singles - they only got around to putting out their first official full length debut album The Land last May. They followed it up with a single, The Mild Awards in November, and the second of two 11-track archive compilations - Acting Thick For Money (Volume 2) - last month. All their releases, together with links to their official website, Facebook and Twitter, are available via their comprehensive and well-stocked Bandcamp page.

RUTH STAVRIC - Without You [47:47]
http://soundcloud.com/ruth-stavric
Oxford-based mother, lover, fighter, film-maker and musician Ruth Stavric makes taut, harrowing music to raise awarness and funds for cancer immunotherapy research. Chances are that all of us will be affected by cancer at some point in our lives, and we don't need to pry into Ruth's own circumstances to hear that this work has been informed some terrible adversity. If you her music as inspiring as I do, you may like to join me in making a donation to Ruth's charity of choice, the Cancer Immunotherapy Fund. The link is on her Soundcloud page above, along with the poignant words "GORDiN BONES We miss you".

THE PAPER SHADES - Light of the Day [51:29]
http://thepapershades.co.uk
Sarah Dollar and Jon Rixon are, they tell us, a male/female duo from the South - specifically between Basingstoke & Newbury. They've known each other for ten years but only formed the band three years ago once they had started writing their own material. Light of the Day is track two on the second Paper Shades EP Where You Lay, and their recent single The Storn is available as a free download via their website. Their next live show is in London at The Bookclub in Islington a week on Sunday (March 10th).

THE MOURNING SUNS - Metal Horses [56:01]
http://themourningsuns.bandcamp.com.
I fell in love with this from bar one - with its arresting vocal, bizarre lyric and glistening ethereal production, it was quite unlike any other music in this week's inbox. The voice belongs to Rosie Wilkes, the band themselves are from Birmingham, and this track comes from their debut EP Heavy Handed, currently available from their Bandcamp. The latest Mourning Suns single A Cloud was included by Roundhouse Records on their "30/30: Best of 2012" compilation album, for which Roundhouse teamed the group up with producer Dimitri Tikovoi (of Goldfrapp, Placebo, Horrors and John Cale fame). Catch them playing hometown shows at The Yardbird on March 20th and The Flapper on May 4th.

Having toured the world as a tour manager and session musician for the likes of The Antlers, Frightened Rabbit & Glasvegas, this project is a collaboration with friend and Sky Larkin drummer Nestor Matthews. Wilson also previously played in Glasgow band Dance Lazarus Dance.

BALLERINA BLACK - Birth Of A Felony [start: 5:01]
http://www.ballerinablack.com
Not much factual information in this band's biog, but for what it's worth here it is in full: "Gloom Pop is one way to describe Ballerina Black’s sound, grave-wave is another. Regardless of sonic hemispheres, the paradoxes that exist in this quartet are startling. Formed in 2007, an extensive tour of California being first on the agenda opening up for the likes of Interpol & Silversun Pickups whilst their debut album Cattle Arithmetic was released to critical acclaim in 2010. "

IAN EVANS - Too Tasty For You, Lager Boy? [start: 9:00]
http://ianevansmusic.bandcamp.com
"I write and record songs constantly and try to get everything that interests me into my music" says Ian Evans. "It takes a lot of research, which I love. Some of the songs I've made are an interactive song to play whilst walking around the V & A Museum, a history of streaking and a discussion on when it's ok or not to have sex with someone. My new E.P. was inspired by the classic BBC dramas Ghostwatch, the Stone Tape, Dr Who and the Tripods, all of which scared me!"

BIRD - Ophelia [start: 13:28]
http://facebook.com/birdmusicofficial
Three piece Liverpool band Bird is the creation of Adele Emmas (singer, songwriter) Sian Williams (guitar, harmonies) and Alexis Samata (drums) They aim to create dark, haunting, atmospheric music to entice listeners into what they describe as "their magical, other worldly universe". They released their first EP 'Shadows' on Jack To Phono records in August 2012. They've been supported by Rob Da Bank at Radio 1, as well as Maconie, Radcliffe and myself at 6 Musicand Dave Monks at BBC Merseyside. This is the lead track of their newly-released EP Ophelia and you'll find more live dates via their Facebook page including Electric Circus in Edinburgh tonight (Monday Feb 18th).

WILLIE DICK - I Will Be Your Juliet [start: 17:50]
http://www.williedick.com
I first encountered psychotroubadour Willie Dick live at Nice'N'Sleazy's in Glasgow a year ago and encouraged him to send his music to BBC Introducing. He describes himself as "a vagabond creating musical and visual mayhem with contact mics, meat cleavers and a butchers block. "Weaving stories of pain and mistrust (this is) the final war cry of a man tittering on the edge of sanity. My youth was a glutenous diet of Cod Liver Oil and the Gospel According to Luke. Sticky oil seeping out of my skin, angelic words thrashed into my brain. It was inevitable. Like a ten foot tattoo miniaturised on the inside of a lip." It's fair to say that there is no comparable songwriter operating in the UK today!

SONS BETWEEN GUNS - The Other Side [start: 20:49]
http://www.sonsbetweenguns.com
Born, they tell us, in a beach hut, Sons Between Guns are Paul and Tom. Under the moniker Paul T, the former used to contribute material to LTJ Bukem’s label, while the latter recorded original music for Theatre productions in London. In December 2010 they recorded their first song, 'Calling on the Rain'. Since then they have produced a catalogue of music which will form a series of EP releases in 2011 and 2012. Career highlights include a headline slot at the world-famous Dublin Castle and an appearance at a High Flying Birds after show party. This is the first track the band ever recorded and the second we’ve featured from the label’s debut release, EP Red 1. A followup EP of remixes came out last summer.

GREAT PLAIN SUNDANCE - Stay Up All Night [start: 24:41]
http://www.facebook.com/greatplainsun
Originally an acoustic trio, Great Plain Sundance expanded in size last September. Students at the University of Liverpool, they are currently in the process of recording their debut EP, which they hope to release in May. More immediately, they are supporting Michael Cassidy at Mello Mello, entering a competition to play at Sound City and then appearing at Liverpool's Zanzibar Club on February 28th. Following that, they play Fiesta Bombarda on the March 15th.

SKIMMED - Ronnie [start: 28:20]
http://www.skimmedmusic.com
Based between Berkshire and Malta, Skimmed aim for a strong pop sensibility in their music while tinging it with "a more alternative and cinematic noir feel". There are ingredients that draw on the poppy 60s girl groups and surf bands combined with the darker elements of the New Wave bands of the 80s, all tied together with a tinge of dream pop. The intend to launch their debut full length album on the 23rd of February, which will be available to buy online.

TALK IN COLOUR - Bones [start: 32:15]
http://www.talkincolour.com
Chris Bangs - Cello, electronics, backing vox, Dave Oliver - Drums, Kat Arney - Harp, Mary Erskine - Vocals and keyboards, Nick Siddall - Guitar By turns dark then uplifting, slipping effortlessly between pure instrumentals and vocal driven tracks, London based five piece Talk In Colour defy easy categorisation. It's no surprise that the band cite influences as far ranging as Lamb, Battles, The XX and Berlin-era Bowie, with a nod to Afrobeat and Alice Coltrane along the way. Together, the band blends electronic and organic instrumentation into a blistering aesthetic.

RANDOLPH SWAIN & THE RED LIGHTS - The Moonlight Burnt My Skin [start: 37:17]
http://www.randolphswain.com
Randolph Swain has recorded his first EP entitled 'New Planet' . It is autobiographical account of the events leading up to his departure from Earth. In this first edition he discovers the existence of the 'New Planet' by accident whilst spying on Mrs Jones from No 34. Certain events seem to be pointing to some serious problems on Earth and the only option is to leave for 'Eris' as soon as possible. Did all this take place or did Randolph just bump his head ? I think we should be told.

AMY SPENCER - Reverie [start: 40:22]
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Amy-Spencer/134923243194767
As she matures as a songwriter, Amy says her music is getting 'heavier and more country-tinged', which compliments the darkening of her subject matter. Her move to London in 2011 to study music at Goldsmiths College proved to be the catalyst for this, although chance has it that her four band mates are also from Amy's home town in Gloucestershire. This year will see them release an EP supported by a series of shows, including gigs the Lost Horizons Folk Club, Leytonstone, on February 15th, and The Wreck in Camberwell on the February 28th.

CENTREFOLDS - In Your Blood [start: 45:17]
http://www.facebook.com/centrefoldshq
Centrefolds aim to produce the very antithesis of what people think of as the current ‘Bristol’ sound. Their music is, they tell us, "unapologetic, artfully crafted, hook-laden indie-pop with pinches of electronica, prog, krautrock and downright eccentricity all bubbling away in the musical melting pot”. 'In Your Blood' is taken from 'Release The Hounds' EP, which is available as a free download from www.thecentrefolds.bandcamp.com. They are currently working on their follow-up EP, and have live shows lined up in London at The 100 Club on March 29th and Water Rats on April 27th

VINCENT BURKE - Goodbye [start: 48:02]
http://soundcloud.com/vincent-burke
As part of a rigorous 5-Year Plan to increase my agricultural yield, Vincent has been releasing a song a month via his blog. R-Lo records recently heard some of these on Soundcloud, and he is now working with them with a view to releasing an EP this Summer. He has a regular Monday slot at the White Lion is Streatham, and is usually playing at the Tulse Hill Tavern on Sundays.

CAT SIZED PANDA - Telekinetic Peripherals [start: 50:18]
http://www.facebook.com/CatSizedPanda
John Sorensen-Jones started manipulating sounds and making ambient electronic music on a PC in Hull way back in 1998. "After taking a 5 year break from producing music", he says "I decided to make a return to it." The results include this track Telekinetic Peripherals.

DOGSTAND - The Assistant [start: 56:16]
http://www.reverbnation.com/dogstand
Dogstand is the remnants of a few, now sadly defunct bands - Zen Terrorists and BUM! to name but two, but most of all is a happy musical collective of close friends and family who live in the South London area. Collaborators in matrimony, Graeme and Carli had been writing and performing acoustically for some time before luring Hard Rawk guru Paul and soloist vintage keyboard freak Leo VK to join them in a new project in the mid noughties. Though fundamentally purveyors of progressive pop, Dogstand cites influences ranging from Led Zeppelin to Edith Piaf, Daft Punk to Ray Davies, Pulp to The Mars Volta, Cardiacs to Bellowhead.

In addition, every Wednesday the mixtape is published on the BBC 6 Music Soundcloud page and added to this page midweek - along with more info about each of the artists. These are the listings for Monday, 11th February 2013

SLAVES - Nervous Energy [start 0:13]
http://www.facebook.com/slavesuk
Slaves describe themselves as a "2 piece Garage Punk duo from Kent, UK" and consist of Isaac Holman on vocals & percussion, and Laurie Vincent on guitar & vocals. This track is available as a free download from http://slavesuk.bandcamp.com. You can endless descriptions of their music by other people on their Facebook page, though the glowing paragraph that's (ahem) credited to me was actually written by Simon Jones, reviewing them at http://freshonthenet.co.uk/faves46

FELDSPAR - The Flat and Paper Sky [start 02:23]
http://feldsparmusic.wordpress.com
Are band biographies going out of fashion or something. All I can tell you about this lot is that they're a London-based five piece who've been aredently supported by The 405, For Folk's sake and BBC Radio 2 - perhaps unsurprising given the outstanding quality of this track. What I can't offer you is any kind of context in which to listen to this music. Their blog tells us that they've released two Eps called The Flat and Paper Sky and The Flat and Paper Sky Vol. II. However they don't offer a tracklisting for either of them - so which of them contains the actual song called The Flat and Paper Sky ? Your guess is as good as mine.

FELIX HAGAN &THE FAMILY feat LOUIS BARABBAS - My Little Lusitania [start 04:14]
http://www.facebook.com/felixhaganmusic
Felix Hagan & The Family are, we're told, "a seven-piece beast made of makeup, hairspray, lovely ladies and staggering musicianship - who play rock and roll infused with musical theatre." However the eponymous Felix writes, plays and produces on their records in his studio space in the attic of Ray Davies' Konk Studios in North London. They recently signed to Manchester label Debt Records which explains why label boss Louis Barabbas is making a guest appearance on this splendid single.

OMEGA66 - Whirlwind [start 08:37]
http://www.omega66.com/
Omega66 is the brainchild of Krik, formerly of Dark Chunk, making music in his small Cardiff studio on guitar, vocals and something called a Stank Machine - which gave its name to the opening track on their last album. His credited collaborators include brilliant local vocalist Sally Thomas and percussionmeisters Adrian Wiggins and Dan Pressley. We played the title track of their second LP Nools And High Horses back in October 2011 and a followup album is expected this year. Whirlwind, newly released on Bandcamp at the end of January, bodes well for the upcoming longplayer.

FLASH BANG BAND - DananananaFreud [start 11:56]
http://facebook.com/flashbangband
Andy Halliday, Rob Carmier and Rodney Roodt (pictured above) describe themselves as three "hearty philosophical gutter rats from Brighton who met on the internet and then got together to make a band: fun time dudes playing for their lives songs about the skewed reality we find ourselves in. And stuff like that." We assume their singularly unpronouncable choice of track name is in homage to the late lamented Glasgow fight-pop sextet Dananananaykroyd. They list their interests as "Vibes. Chaos. Serendipity. Wanderlust. Tempting Fate. The 90s (who knew?), Making New Mistakes. There is more to life than music" and "Doing things the hard way so you don't have to." This, my friends, is a band destined to go far. Listen and marvel.

CROOKED HANDS – Under [start 14:58]
http://www.facebook.com/crookedhands
Beginning as a handful of acoustic tracks by singer-songwriter Christopher Brown, Newcastle's Crooked Hands has expanded and finally evolved into a five-piece band with the addition of gutarist Tom Booth. Their stated aim is to fuse dark acoustic guitars and hymnal reverb-soaked atmospherics with sprawling, heavy rhythms. Recommended to us by the excellent Nicky Roberts at BBC Introducing in Newcastle, this is their debut single, available from http://crookedhands.bandcamp.com and the play a hometown show opening for Jim Lockey and the Solemn Sun at The Cluny this Friday February 15th.

QTIER - Still [start 19:24]
http://www.qtier.co.uk
The trio of Adam Pleass, Howard Whiddett and James Gordon formed recently in London and set up a studio "by the coast" to make this record. They play East London's Neu Gallery this Wednesday February 13th and they've been tipped for greatness by Fly Magazine who recently made this their Track of The Day. That's about it for the facts. The rest of their press release contains mostly adjectives. "Beautiful", "captivating", "breathtaking", "tender", "hushed", "lush", "swooning", "forward-thinking", "mesmerising", "serious", "extraordinary", "electric", "special" and "excited" since you ask...

MON MON - Fullers Slade [start 23:20]
http://www.monmon.co.uk
Back in 1967 the Doors and Velvet Underground can scarcely have imagined they were founding an entire new global tradition of louche, leering, sneering, streetwise, tough-ass rock raconteurs. I was 17 at the time and over the ensuing four and a half decades I've lost count of the loud, lowlife, leatherjacketed poseurs we've seen strutting and declaiming from club stages across the western world in their wake. Most of them managed to imitate the form without ever coming close to the true spirit of those early US pioneers. Dead Fingers Talk managed it, as did Echo and The Bunnymen, and maybe even the early BRMC. But here in the 21st century, Leeds trio MonMon have no need of sunglasses or motorcycle jackets to stake their claim as true heirs of the genre - renewing and reinventing that classic sarcastic swagger with a gritty Northern spin that's all their own. Not to mention a band so tight you couldn't fit a Rizla paper between the beats. We all know there's not much justice in the world but - if there was - then 2013 would be MonMon's year.

EMPTY POOLS - Small Talk [start 26:18]
http://facebook.com/emptypoolsmusic
Empty Pools were first recommended to us by Sam and Rich from BBC Introducing in Bristol. They formed in the Summer of 2011 with a mission to "combine elements of noise rock with teen dream melodies, late ’70s CBGB’s angularity and the jazzy world-pop sophistication of the Thrill Jockey set." We enjoyed their single Vanderbilt Cup last year on the Mixtape and this track will be their second single for the Battle label on March 11th with a hometown launch gig at the Louisiana on Thursday March 14th.

YOUNG ASTRONAUT - Hey Little Ghost [start 31:30]
http://youngastronaut.co.uk
Young Astronaut originated in the suburbs of the New Forest as two members, brothers Chris and Pete Boakes, in 2007. For the next four years they remained a duo during which they worked to develop a "harmonious and considered" blend of music which laid the foundations for Young Astronaut. These musical explorations evolved into ten tracks that then formed the basis of an album which, with the addition of drummer Niko Battistini, they then recorded in a single month's work in the studio. The resulting full length debut Fawn is now available as a free download in exchange for your email address via their website. They play 229 in London on Saturday, March 16th.

HOMEWORK - The Edge Of Control Was Black [start 36:15]
http://www.wearehomework.com
With two successful EPs under their belt, Scottish synthmeisters Homework recently announced the forthcoming release of their debut album. 13 Towers was recorded over a handful of weekends in a former lighthouse and will be released on March 25 via Home From Home Records. Hailing from the exotic Scottish outposts of Inverness, Mull and Dumfries their various members gravitated towards Edinburgh, where the band was formed in 2009 with a lineup consisting of O. Kass (vocals, synths), R. Baird (vocals, guitar, synths), R. Kass (drums) and A. Dennis (bass). They've been supported at radio so far by Lauren Laverne, Vic Galloway and Ally McCrae as well as myself, and a series of live dates throughout the UK in April and May will be announced shortly.

TESSERA SKIES - Milieu [start 41:06]
http://tesseraskies.com
Newcastle three-piece Tessera Skies consists of Mark Broughton, Matt Hardy and Ben Helm and is, they tell us, "the eventual result of four years intermittent writing and recording between university studies". Coming from collective backgrounds in speech, sound, science, classical and jazz, they share their "love of pop, ambience and the orchestral". The name was inspired by the meaning and interpretation, both artistically and scientifically, of the sky. Also, they cheerfully admit, "it sounded quite nice". Their 2012 single Soliloquy Of An Astronaut (featured on the mixtape last year) was overseen by local production legend Mick Ross, who also had a hand in the mixing of Milieu. Lyrically, the song is based upon the concept of faith throughout childhood and as a young adult - the lyrics can be found in full at
http://soundcloud.com/tessera-skies/milieu.

ROBB MURPHY - When Silence Comes [start 44:40]
http://www.robbmurphy.com
Robb Murphy discovered his passion for composition while studying Music Technology at Queens University in his hometown of Belfast - and can frequently be found working as a Sound Engineer at local gigs, recording bands and also as a DJ. When Silence Comes was first recommended to us by Tim at Mill Valley Studios (also in Belfast) and comes from Robb's debut album Take A Stand which was released last April, and a recent live show with his eight piece live band garnered glowing praise from Ireland's prestigious Hot Press magazine, who described his album as "a must for fans of acoustic pop ballads."

THE SCHOLARS - Love The Thunder [start 48:39]
http://www.facebook.com/thescholarsofficial
Since we first heard from Banbury's The Scholars in 2008, they've won BBC Oxford's Battle of the Bands, been featured in the independent film Turbulence, played countless gigs and festivals and slimmed down to a three piece lineup. Now consisting of Adrian Banks. Christian Gillett and Leigh Taylor they released "Love The Thunder" via http://thescholars.bandcamp.com where you can also find their back catalogue - including the stunning reworking of their BBC Introducing classic "This Heart's Built To Break". No gigs currently in the date sheet, but subscribe to them on Facebook to get notified as soon as more come in.

DEMAIN - Broad Strokes [start 51:53]
http://soundcloud.com/demaine
Dan de Maine AKA Demain is an electronic music producer and occasional student based in Southampton. His style is somewhat eclectic, reflecting his varied music taste and influences. Recently he has been collaborating with local guitarist and vocalist Alex Wolfe. 2013 is going to be an exciting year with an album coming out on Fent Plates and an EP being released on Sakoon records, as well as Demain getting his live act together

GEM DOS - Cuffs [start 54:55]
http://soundcloud.com/gem-dos
"I'm originally from south east London (though I'm half Irish) and grew up listening to Drum and Bass and Electronica" says the artist known as GEM DOS. "I've been living in Dublin for 5 years and have done music courses at The Sound Training Centre and The Academy of Sound. I’m always up for remixes, colabs and chatting so if you want you can get me via my Soundcloud page. I have no idea what you would call my music other than electronic. Some of it is just to the left - maybe you can have a listen for me and let me know what you would call it."

In that time, they’ve released three albums: a 2012 self-titled debut, FREQUENCY in 2011 and THREE at the tail-end of last year. A new EP is promised in coming months, as are a couple of forays onto the live music scene. Keep an eye on their website for details.

CAMP STAG - Sirens [03:29]
http://www.campstag.net
Camp Stag hail from Stoke-on-Trent, and are Rich Dooley (drums), Ade Harrison (keyboards), Dan Nixon (vocals/guitar) and Chris Wilson (bass). Formed in early 2011, they have already shared a stage with the likes of Ultrasound and The 1975. They released this single for free, but also have an EP available digitally. An album will follow shortly, and they also perform live on a regular basis.

BON ARROW - Let's Get Back To Where We Started [06:17]
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Bon-Arrow/329333160414722
Bon Arrow is the solo project of Kirsten Taylor. Having moved back to Ulverston in the Lake District following a spell in London, she learnt how to record herself on a laptop and started making tracks with whatever instruments came to hand, including battered guitars and an old Yamaha keyboard. We hope you’ll agree the results are haunting.

THE SHALLOWS - Get Gone [10:30]
http://www.facebook.com/theshallowsuk
Based in London, The Shallows are Tom Skelton, Russ Cragg, Al Hewitt and Joe White. ‘Get Gone’ is taken from their EP, ABOUT TIME VOL 1, which they’ll next be showcasing live at the O2 Academy in Islington on February 5th, followed by the Finsbury on March 1st

STE McCABE - Accessorise [13:44]
http://www.ste-mccabe.co.uk
Ste McCabe describes himself a queer-feminist electro-punk one-man-band, and the only thing missing from his description is his wickedly acerbic sense of humour. Ste released his 3rd album BAD KITTY on Cherryade Records in late 2012, and has been touring across the UK and Europe for around 7 years. Next on the agenda are gigs in Switzerland, Iceland and Scandinavia. His next UK outing is at TAP in Southend on March 16th.

DENNIS - Ella [17:35]
http://www.dennisband.com
Dennis are an 8-piece roots, folk & brass band from the former pit town of Hetton-Le-Hole. Among their members are veterans of European and O2 Academy tours, and National Brass Band competitions. ‘Ella’ is one of four tracks on the COLLIERY WELFARE EP, which is available digitally.

THE BLOOD CHOIR - No Windows To The Old World [21:27]
http://www.facebook.com/thebloodchoir
Hailing from the West Country, The Blood Choir are Robin Maddicott, Joe Mountain, Rod Brakes and Sam Selby - and no strangers to 6 Music Listeners. Their superb debut album NO WINDOWS TO THE OLD WORLD was released last June on IRL/Top Cat Music. To see what them in their full live majesty, head to The Fleece in Bristol on March 4th, where they’ll be playing with an outfit called The Magic Band.

ASSASSINS OF SOUND - Butterfly [25:29]
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Assassins-of-Sound/139232036115532
Another band from way out west, Assassins of Sound have just released an album called WALTZ SONG, which was two years in the making. During that time, they’ve gone from being five to three and now twenty! The music is written by Lydia Duncan, Alex Duncan and Steve Threlkeld, who are currently pondering how to shape their material into a live set. They also like to experiment with strange instruments – the latest of which was constructed from an office desk, rubbish bin and salvaged guitar neck. They wish to offer thanks to their industrious friend Matt White for that.

CRYSTAL SEAGULLS - Ups and Downs [29:20]
http://www.facebook.com/CrystalSeagulls
Crystal Seagulls are a unsigned four-piece comprising Jim, John, Elz and Ben. After just a year on the circuit, they’ve released a single, headlined a stage at BrisFest, and been played on over 30 different radio stations around the globe. Based in London, their next gig is at The Comedy Pub in Leicester Square on February 15th, though they’ve ventured far-and-wide in recent months. Wisely, they regularly update their Facebook page and Twitter feed, should you want to keep up-to-speed with their movements.

BOMB FACTORY - Gulliver [32:42]
http://www.bomb-factory.co.uk
Post-punk noise merchants Bomb Factory will self-release their new EP, ‘Gulliver’ on Febuary 17th. Recorded in their hometown of Cambridge last August (then mastered in Norwich), they describe it as attack on the brutal tedium of modernity. Fronted by shouter-in-chief Ranting Jack, the five-strong band will be playing at the Dublin Castle in Camden on March 8th.

PARIIS OPERA HOUSE - Finnish Line [34:59]
http://www.pariisoperahouse.com
Described in Gigwise as the "glorious lovechild of Klaxons and Justice", Pariis Opera House are a production duo based in London. Since launching in November 2011, they have done remixes for the likes of Island and Infectious Records, as well as clinching sync deals with Channel 4 and E4. With these came an on-screen appearance on Hollyoaks. They are currently working on an EP and regularly release 'demixes' - where they take popular songs and destroy them for fun. Definitely an outfit to keep track of in 2013.

FLYNN'S ARCADE - Dead Mens Money [38:45]
http://www.facebook.com/flynnsarcade
Eat your heart out Seattle, Bognor Regis is where you'll find Grunge's latest and most authentic flowering. I loved this on first hearing - the sound of three people on the verge of a nervous breakdown, a trio at the end of their collective tether. A track that sounds as if they had to make this music or they would explode. Former schoolfriends Andy Greenway (Vocals/Guitar), Mike Pierce (Bass/Backing Vocals) and Charles Pierce (Drums/Backing Vocals) have named their band in reference to one of the locations in the movie Tron. You can see more of their work via their YouTube channel, and they hope to start playing around their home area soon. Come on promoters - give these guys a break!

STATEMENT HAIRCUT - Borsig [41:34]
http://www.facebook.com/statementhaircut
Easily the best-named new band we've encountered this year, Statement Haircut divide their time between Liverpool and Berlin. Their coming together was a serendipitous one. Independently replying to a flat-share advert, Darren Reynolds and Mikey Stevenson discovered a common interest in songwriting, guitars, synthesizers and home recording. They began performing live in 2009, and keep their facebook page updated regularly with news of future gigs.

FIONA SOE PAING - Daymoon Sun [46:18]
http://www.fionasoepaing.bandcamp.com
Taken from Fiona’s TOWER OF BABEL EP, the lyrics of ‘Daymoon Sun’ may seem a little incomprehensible. That’s because they’re in Burmese! Fiona assures us they’re clean, however – and we’ll have to take her word for it! Here next shows are is at Glasgow’s LadyFest in March, followed by a theatre collaboration at the Tron on May 11th. Her new single "Heartbeat" is due for release this Spring.

SOFTWHERE - Who Knows [50:10]
http://www.softwhere.org.uk
Tynesiders Jonny and Sarah are Softwhere, who do their best work in the warmth of a studio. This track is taken from their latest album A FEW WEIRD LITTLE SONGS, which saw them working with a number of local luminaries - including harmonica genius Lyndon Anderson and folk songstress Meghann Clancy. Their previous work is all neatly archived on their website.

SPC ECO - PUSH (Find The Noise) [54:10]
http://spceco.bandcamp.com
Pronounced Space Echo, SPC ECO are Rose Berlin and Dean Garcia. Rose is currently studying for a BA in sculpture, while Dean (previously of seminal 90′s band Curve) is a multi-instrumentalist and maverick record producer. Rose is also Dean’s daughter, and they have been writing and recording songs from as soon as she was able to make a sound.

In addition, every Wednesday the mixtape is published on the BBC 6 Music Soundcloud page and added to this page midweek - along with more info about each of the artists. These are the listings for Monday, 28th January 2013

POLLEN - Lazy Sundays, Easy Mondays [START 0:12]
http://pollenmusic.com
Pollen formed in another hemisphere back in 1995 and are currently focussing on following up the band's debut LP, 'The Glorious Couch Life' with a second album, as yet untitled, WHICH THEY ARE working on in Helskinki. It is, they tell us, is due for release in the Spring. The band underwent several changes before settling on today's collaborative pairing of bassist Chris Boughton (Japan) and guitarist and vocalist Cam Allen (UK), though this year they hope to come together and make a new permanent base in London.

THUMPERS - Sound Of Screams [START 03:42]
http://facebook.com/thumpersthumpers
Thumpers’ sound is the work of childhood amigos Marcus Pepperell and John Hamson Jr. Friends since the age of 11 and playing in bands together during their teens, the two reignited their musical bond again in early 2011. ‘Dancing’s Done’, their debut single, is released February 18th on rose-tinted limited 7” vinyl on paradYse Records and cassette on Kissability. We love their music, as do The Guardian, who made them a recent Band Of The Day.

BRIDIE JACKSON AND THE ARBOUR - Scarecrow [START 07:30]
http://www.bridiejackson.com
No surprises that readers at my Fresh On The Net blog loved the gorgeous vocals, simple piano and understated strings of Newcastle-based four-piece Bridie Jackson & The Arbour. They tell us they “use sparse instrumentation and intriguing vocal harmonies to create music that is simultaneously beautiful, ethereal, dark and powerful” and for once the music more than lives up to the PR bumph. The band formed gradually, drawing together experienced musicians from across the North East, with very different musical backgrounds but a shared passion for creating beautiful and interesting new music.

FOLD - Blinding Light [START 10:40]
http://fold.fm
Another outfit who are no strangers to regular listeners and who've barged their way back onto the Mixtape through sheer music quality. Based in Leeds, live downtempo / trip-hop band Fold integrate speech into music in experimental ways in order to reflect some of the heavier stuff going on in the world. Band founder Seth Mowshowitz dedicates this unreleased track to his mother Harriet who died on August 3rd, 2012 aged 70. “She brought kindness, laughter and light to a lot of people throughout her life.” says Seth “I hope that this track will inspire others to come together and overcome their own darkness.” You can read the full lyric at http://soundcloud.com/fold/blinding-light where the Scottish Harp samples are credited to Corrina Hewat – who may or may not be the female voice featured on this outstanding track.

BLANK MAPS - Everything Ends [START 14:59]
http://www.facebook.com/blankmaps
Blank Maps are Thom, Ben, Ellwood, and Jake. Although 2011 saw them find their feet live, it wasn’t until 2012 that things started to take shape. They spent the first 5 months of the year writing, then released an EP through our friends Tiny Lights Recordings in August. This resulted in them playing alongside 2:54, The 1975 and Deaf Club and at the Olympics Hyde Park Event, and gaining extensive radio play, including, of course, the BBC Introducing Mixtape on 6 Music. Their next two gigs are in Newcastle at Cluny 2 on March 4th and London's Lock Tavern on March 14th.

TIGERCUB - Little Rope [START 18:49]
http://www.facebook.com/tigercubtigercub
A song and a vocal that grab you from the get-go, with playing to match. You're not really supposed to have favourites here at the BBC but without question Little Rope by Brighton’s Tigercub is my absolute favourite. Really interesting sounding band and I’d love to tell you all about them, but hey – as you can see on their Facebook – Jamie Stephen Hall, James Alexander Allix and James Wheelwright are giving nothing away about themselves whatever. When you hear a band you like as much as this it's always interesting to read a little about their background, outlook, music, motivation, mission, where we can see them live - and indeed buy their music. Any artists who'd welcome some help with writing a biog for their band, will find a few tips on the BBC Introducing Blog.

THE DEADLINE SHAKES - Boy [START 21:33]
http://www.facebook.com/thedeadlineshakes
(pictured above) This is the forthcoming second official single from Glasgow's The Deadline Shakes - out 18th March 2013! Their debut single Sweeten The Deal got support from Steve Lamacq, Jim Gellatly, Vic Galloway and Artrocker. The band were selected to play a ‘Glasgow Loves Christmas’ gig in George Square and made the final of the Tartan Clef Big Apple Award. We've also freatured their subsequent free single Don’t You Be Too Cool here on the Introducing Mixtape.

HARRY RIDGWAY - Running To The North [START 25:23]
http://soundcloud.com/harryridgway
Fine fingerpicking acoustic guitarist and songwriter Harry Ridgway describes himself on his BBC Introducing profile as as a "Leeds based singer songwriter" though Soundcloud gives his location as Peterborough and further investigation finds him inhabiting the fenlands of Market Deeping, just North of Peterborough. He mentions on Twitter that he’s “going to be doing some video stuff and other things for Running To The North soon…” Beyond that. alas, he too tells us nothing about himself or his music at all.

THUMPERMONKEY - Wheezyboy [START 28:23]
http://thumpermonkey.com
The London quartet Thumpermonkey has existed in one form or another since 2003 and currently consists of Michael Woodman (founding member, vocals, guitar, lyrics, a.k.a. the most important one), Rael Jones (guitar, piano, wizardry, a.k.a. the most useful one), Ben Wren (drums, opinions, a.k.a. the most complainingy one), Sam Warren (bass, peircing eyes, a.k.a. the most least uncool one). This track comes from the band’s latest album Sleep Furiously which was released in October - and also features the former Mixtape favourite When Scouts Go Bad. Actually in almost 10 years, they have released six albums "but still struggle" they claim "to write a convincing biography." They describe their style as Heavy Art Rock, and that's good enough for me.

BIRDENGINE - Phantom Limb [START 32:55]
http://www.birdengine.com
Birdengine is the name under which Lawry Joseph Tilbury makes music. His melodies and lyrics aim to take the listener to a dark realm "where kings are trapped in glass jars, feral children run amok and dead mermaids litter the sea shore". Live, he accompanies his vocals with a combination of nylon-stringed guitar and record crackle. The first Birdengine EP was an experimental affair released in 2005 on the Scottish label Benbecula Records and hailed, apparently, as "the first relevant work in freak folktronica". His mini-album ‘I Fed Thee Rabbit Water’ was released on Drift Records in 2007 and Phantom Limb is the opening track on his current full length album The Crooked Mile.

LUMIN BELLS - Hold You Inside [START 35:38]
http://luminbells.bandcamp.com
Sigh. Yet another band who’ve taken a lot of time and trouble to create a beautifully wrought soundscape – but couldn’t spare ten minutes to tell the world how and why their music came to be made. But then I remembered Lumin Bells was the new project from Mick Dolan - formerly a main mover in the Merseyside band Bird - and consulted that oracle on all matters Liverpudlian, the Von Pip Music Express. This is a brand new trio consisting of Mick plus Nico Hercules and Neil Frost. Hold You Inside comes from a forthcoming EP they’re currently recording at Track studios in Liverpool with Steve Powell. They’ve called on a host of Liverpool musicians to flesh out their songs including George Hitchmough on drums and Danny Poole on bass plus the trumpet playing of Martin Smith (who’s played with Shack) on the EP’s title track Beyond My Gaze. They'll be recording another eight tracks to form the basis of a first album provisionally entitled titled The Hidden Room. Huge thanks to Andy Von Pip for this clear, detailed information. And Nico, Mick and Neil – it wouldn’t have killed you to tell us that information yourselves in the first place, would it?

THE ANDROID ANGEL - Chicago John [START 38:47]
http://androidangel.blogspot.co.uk
More musicmaking from Reigate’s most musical son – the startlingly talented and prolific Paul Coltoféanu. Not content with the every growing success of Free Swim he returns here to his alternative persona as The Android Angel to charm the pants off readers this weekend with this cheeky slice of twee electropop. It seems to me that Paul’s increasingly assured approach to musicmaking depends partly on a whimsical approach and exceedingly light touch so that he never appears to be taking the importance of his work too earnestly. Yet also on a real seriousness of execution so that his songs and recordings are all quietly crafted to perfection. Here is an artist to watch in 2013 because – to coin a cliche – whatever he comes up with next, you can always expect the unexpected.

BRILLIANT MIND - Blyth [START 41:38]
http://www.brilliantmind.bandcamp.com/
We recently featured an engagingly skewed songwriter called Euan Lynn on the Introducing Mixtape, and he turned out to be the younger brother of Calum Lynn from Brilliant Mind. This got me all excited since BM are a band I've loved since seeing them at a showcase gig at The Discovery Museum in their native Newcastle back in Novermber 2009. That show was organised by local development agency Generator and my review of the whole event can be found here on the BBC Introducing blog. Selfpromotion hasn't been Brilliant Mind's strongest suit over the years, and it was only by accident that I stumbled across this track, which they uploaded to BBC Introducing and their own Soundcloud page without bothering to tell anybody. This is the strongest track yet from a band who are simultaneously one of the North East's brightest talents and also one of its best-kept secrets. Let's hope Blyth brings them to a wider audience.

SHANE BEALES - A New Year [START 48:28]
http://www.shanebeales.com
“Hello, my name is Shane Beales. I was born in Nottingham in 1982 but my family relocated to Perth, Australia where I lived till I was 6 and my favourite pastime was Breakdancing. I wrote my first song aged 8 and for my 12th birthday, my parents bought me a drumkit. As I teenager I went to high school in Melbourne, where my favourite subject quickly became music. In 1999, I moved to Colchester to do A levels in music, music technology and philosophy. I lived with my granny in the country and, because the drums all had to come over on a ship, I spent most of my time time bashing her piano and writing songs. I studied music at LIPA and released my first EP Beautiful in 2005. After university, I stayed in Liverpool and for the next year wrote, recorded and released a new song every week in what I called Project 52. In the Autumn of 2010 I relocated to London, where I am currently based. Last year I released and promoted my micro album or song cycle Tel Aviv, a suite of six short songs from the spring. I also worked with Egyptian singer Nadya Shanab on a new collaborative song inspired by the events in the Middle East and North Africa entitled It’s All About The People. This is my latest single, A New Year which was released on New Years Eve. It is 365 beats for 2013…”

THE HOLY ORDERS - To The Gallows [START 52:44]
http://www.facebook.com/theholyorders
The Holy Orders were first told that their amps were too loud in 2006 and they've divided the opinions of sound engineers ever since. Among listeners however they've developed a reputation for being one of the most interesting and exciting live acts in Hull. They have also been playing further afield including appearances at Truck festival and have supported many wonderful acts including Josh T. Pearson, Wild Beasts, The Twilight Sad, Dinosaur Pile-up and many, many more. Following their single, "Paper/Scissors/Stone" (Summer 2012), they are preparing to release their debut album "For The Ears Of Dogs To Come" in early 2013. Meanwhile the Holy Orders continue loud as ever.

This is the new band project of longstanding friend of the show and recent session guest Zoe Konez (guitar/vocals) - with Claudia Mansaray (bass/vocals) and Sarah Smith (drums/vocals). They are currently gigging across the capital and beyond whilst preparing for the release of their debut EP in early 2013.
Birds vs Planes

In the small hours of a Monday morning from 2-3am you can hear a selection of my favourite new tunes compiled into an hour-long mixtape of nonstop music. All the audio is sourced from the BBC Introducing Uploader - some of it recommended by friends and colleagues and some discovered via Twitter and my own Fresh On The Net blog.

From 3am each Monday the latest mixtape is available free via the 6 Music Downloads Page - where you'll also find archived episodes from the previous 4 weeks. All the tracklists and start times for each track are published here - together with a link to each artist's website.

In addition, every Wednesday the mixtape is published on the BBC 6 Music Soundcloud page and added to this page midweek - along with more info about each of the artists. These are the listings for Monday, 14th January 2013

BIRDS VS PLANES - Relative Worth [start: 00:13]
http://www.birdsvsplanes.com
BvP are a female fronted Alternative-Indie band from the far north of England. Drawing from a wide range of influences & gigging regularly has helped, they tell us, "create our own energetic sound. We've played over 150 shows round the UK. Including Radio Ones Big Weekend, the Heineken Jammin Festival (Milan) & a recent tour support w/ Glasvegas.

THE PAGES - Holiday [start: 03:46]
http://facebook.com/thepagesuk
The Pages describe themselves as a "3 piece Greenwich Based Blues, 60's, 70's Originals and Rock n Roll Band" and consist of Steve Hanshaw on Bass and Vocals, Kev White on Guitar, Harmonica and backing Vocals plus Steve Wreyford on Drums and Percussion. They came together in late 2011 fron ex-members of Aadvarks, Jesse Hector, The Dials, Connett, Bad Mad Missouri Buffalo and The Broken Men.

FORESTEARS - Against The Floor [start: 06:50]
http://www.facebook.com/forestears
Forestears are, they tell us "an outstanding Brighton band, comprising of delicate melodies, horns that warm the soul and lyrics that makes your spine tingle." They tell us nothing else whatever about themselves, but you can read a lot of quotes from what other people have said about them on their Facebook page.

DEATH RATTLE - Fixer [start: 11:00]
http://deathrattle.tv
Electronic gloom-pop duo Death Rattle combines the harmonised vocals of Helen Hamilton with the production, drum programming and synth melodies of Chris Hamilton. Formed in late 2011, they released their debut EP 'HE&I' via Frontal Noize (BE) in October 2012 with positive blog reviews across the world. Three black and white music videos produced by the band accompany the five track EP. In 2013 they plan to release new material written and recorded in an abandoned 17th Century farmhouse in France.

LST - One Wish [start: 13:44]
http://www.lstmusic.com
"Hi i'm LST a singer, songwriter & lyricist - and have been featured as the 100% Homegrown Track Of The Week on 1xtra, supported by BBC Introducing: The South and was part of the BBC's first Introducing Masterclass at Abbey Road & Madia vale in 2011. i won the 'Road To Blissfields' competition in April 2011 & am now in the process of finishing off an album that i plan to hurl around the globe. I'm set to spread my positive messages far and wide. L....L....L....LETS GO!!!

TOM HICKOX - The Pretty Pride of Russia [start: 17:40]
http://www.facebook.com/tomhickox
As a teenager Tom Hickox adored Beckett, Pinter and Orton, and as his passion for literature grew he joined a school rock band and began writing music. After studying English at Manchester University Tom went on to do an M.A in sound recording and self-released a DIY album, Fear In A Handful of Dust named after a line in The Waste Land. He picked up a management and publishing deal with Warner Chappell and his extensive gigging has included SXSW, Glastonbury and the Big Chill. “It has been a long journey to identify my own unique space,” says Tom. “I aim to write hundreds of songs to get to the point where I am consistently delivering material I care deeply about.”. His new new album will be released in 2013 and features Richard Hawley guesting on one of the tracks.

JUST WILLIAM & THE OUTLAWS - It Ain't Alright [start: 21:20]
http://www.facebook.com/justwilliamandtheoutlaws
Currently playing as Just William, solo artist, combining the Old West with Will Shakespeare and acoustic guitars. A musical tragedy, but only in the classic sense; 5 acts, 5 albums. Currently offering a free song download via his Facebook page

THE BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH - U.F [start: 23:58]
http://www.thebluescreenofdeath.co.uk
You may recall how Southampton's Blue Screen Of Death first came to be formed, but if you don't it certainly bears repeating. "Have you ever woken up in a lift surrounded by four people you don't know, with no recollection of how you came to be there, but a nagging feeling that you don't want to know? That's exactly what happened to Steve, Harry, Pete, Paul, and Tom one morning a few years ago. That kind of awkward situation can lead you to make strange decisions. They chose to assume that they all played in a rock band together. This way they need ask no further questions as to how they had ended up in this position". The alternative version is that they "formed from a bizarre experiment involving smurfs, Viagra and a few cans of Four Loko - the marriage is still binding."

EMMA BALLANTINE - Unspoken Rules [start: 27:30]
http://www.emmaballantine.com
Emma is a West London based singer songwriter influenced by acoustic artists including Joni Mitchell, Suzanne Vega and Agnes Obel. She launched her debut EP, Flying Machine, at historic London venue The Troubadour on 14th August 2012 – and has since continued performing across London with her band. Emma has been playing the piano and writing poems since the age of six, eventually combining the two to produce her first composition in her early teens. Since arriving in London in 2009 via Salisbury, Oxford and Ghana, Emma has performed around the City at venues including The Troubadour, The Dublin Castle, The Spice of Life and Holloway Arts and OxJam festivals.

GALLERY CIRCUS - Club House Killer [start: 30:53]
http://www.facebook.com/gallerycircus/info
Prodigal sons of the North East - the ridiculously musical twins Graeme and Dan Ross - have just spend a lengthy sojourn in San Francisco. On Facebook they just posted "Happy New Year! 2012 has been great to us - we're definitely going to miss SF! We're coming home for 2013 - get ready England for double the rock! PS. News of our return show coming soon! Dan & Gra X" I can't wait. Club House Killer is the opening track on their debut EP released last March and available via their Bandcamp.

GERARD AND THE WATCHMEN - Hesitate [start: 33:25]
http://www.facebook.com/davegerardmusic
This song comes from an 8-track EP called "I Climbed a Tree" released last April on Bandcamp by this acoustic folk collective based around the song writing of producer Dave Gerard. Gerard and the Watchmen, they tell us "combine the influence of 70s English and American folk with more modern alternative sounds and production. The record features prominent Vocal Harmonies, guitars and double bass, enhanced with, strings, lap steel, E-bowed banjo, mandolin and harp." They play an extensive UK tour next month - full details at http://davegerardnews.tumblr.com/post/38166716986/february-tour-monday-11th-portland-arms-cambridge

JUNGLE DOCTORS - Better [start: 36:24]
http://www.jungledoctors.com
A brand new single released last week by Jungle Doctors and available via iTunes, Amazing Tunes and Spotify. This Teddington five piece formed in November 2010, but "only really became Jungle Doctors in late 2011, spending all our time gigging and writing and rehearsing in our singer’s garden cabin (we like to think it’s where the magic happens)." Much has been made of the fact that the highly successful Jake Bugg is "only" 18 - and Jungle Doctors are younger than Jake - but ultimately what does it matter whether a musician is seventeen or seventy ? All that counts for us at 6 Music is what comes out of the speakers and if we like it, we play it. And just for the record I like this very much indeed.

LOOK YONDER - Solomon [start: 39:18]
http://lookyonder.bandcamp.com
Look Yonder is the ukulele, banjo, lungs and larynx of songwriter Rory Evers. Born in Cleethorpes sometime in the 1980s, he embarked at his earliest convenience to start a band in the big city. After years of noise making with varying levels of success, Rory now creates music entirely uncontaminated by collaboration. He opens for Hot Feet at 26 Aire Street in his adopted hometown of Leeds this Saturday, January 19th.

NINETAILS - Maybe We [start: 42:54]
http://www.ninetailsband.co.uk
This is the opening track on Slept And Did Not Sleep trhe second EP released last month by the Liverpool four piece Ninetails on the Superstar Destroyer label. You may remember that a year ago their debut EP, Ghost Ride The Whip, in under two weeks and we played their single Social Guesswork back in January and featured the followup Rawdon Fever on this mixtape in April. There's next to no information on any of their online pages, but that long awaited debut album must surely be in the pipeline for 2013.

THE SOFT - Mori [start: 47:37]
http://www.facebook.com/thesoftmusic
The Soft are a three-piece electronic outfit from Bury St Edmunds who are signed to Ceremony Recordings and make, they tell us "accessible, malleable, danceable music." They haven't quite got the hang of promoting themselves online with anything as useful as a list of upcoming gigs. But we can take it from one of their recent tweets that they'll be opening for Lapalux at Norwich Arts Centre on March 16th as well as at Bungalows & Bears in Sheffield on some unspecifed date.

THE LITTLE UNSAID - Through The Fields [start: 51:45]
http://www.thelittleunsaid.com
Music made with instruments, beats, machines, voices and noisy animals by a small, anonymous chap in big London. In fact, we're told, The Little Unsaid is the musical alter-ego of John Elliott, a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and composer who originally hails from a tiny town in Yorkshire that no one has heard of. As well as regularly performing his music in rooms full of people and animals around the UK, John also composes music for film and theatre and has been known to run long distances for pleasure.

HIVA OA - Badger [start: 56:20]
http://hivaoa.bandcamp.com
Hiva Oa is a three piece alternative band based in Edinburgh. Formed in 2010, they consist of Stephen (guitar/vocals), Christian (cello) and Marco (bass). Blending acoustic sounds with more experimental moments the band created a debut EP called Future Nostalgia For Sale and followed it last September with an album called The Awkward Hello, Handshake, Kiss. "The beauty of Hiva Oa" they tell us "lies in the understated."
