Weekend feedback

Richard Irvine-Brown - BBC Sport Interactive

A crunch weekend of Euro qualifiers means a bulging inbox of questions.

Many of you (Scottish, English, and others) were disappointed that Scotland v Italy was not on BBC television. The answer to that is that international football is sold in packages and often years in advance. With the Euro qualifiers the broadcasting rights were split (with Sky) so that the BBC had the Scotland away fixtures, and England home fixtures. Obviously it would have been nice to have screened the drama from Hampden on the BBC, but we were not able to decide to do the game just because it turned out to have so much riding on it, and it was not a straight choice between the Scotland match or the England one.

Coincidentally, and in response to the many fans that have been in contact, the only match televised, in full, on the BBC on Saturday was Northern Ireland's battling win over Denmark. The game was not just on BBC TWO NI but made available throughout the UK on BBCi, Radio 5 Live and online.

So, in case you missed it, there was a match report on tv and online here. As well as interviews with Aaron Hughes and David Healy, and a photo gallery commemorating his record-breaking marksmanship.

For anyone confused by our analysis of England's chances of topping their qualifying group, yes, if England won 1-0 they would have a superior goal difference to Croatia, but head-to-head results count first in these qualifiers (if the teams are level on points).

But, in between all this roundballing, where was our coverage of newly-crowned World Touring Car champion Andy Priaulx? It was here, prominent on our Motorsport page, and included an interview with Andy after his great win. As with Daryl Peach's victory last week, we do try to cover British triumphs but, if it is in a less well-known tournament or sport, it might sometimes be less prominent.

And did you enjoy the darts? Honestly, I watched our coverage all weekend, so how did ITV do? No silly acrimony or rivalry (you may have guessed that we've split the rights package, see above) - the BBC had the Winmau World Masters and ITV has the Grand Slam. How was the coverage in comparison?

A final note to say thanks to all of you that offered your tributes to Mike Gregory.

The pot, the pool, the cup, and no Bees or Toffees

Hi everyone, I'm Richard Irvine-Brown and I help out with, among other things, the Sports Editors' Blog and the e-mails we receive from you every weekend in response to our coverage.

Each weekend I draw together your e-mails and feedback (from this blog, from 606, from people who collar me on a Saturday night at The Yuppy and Filofax winebar) for the editors and we discuss responses.

This weekend we re-ran the Calzaghe-Kessler fight, welcomed the first round of the FA Cup and saw a British world champion crowned, and the powers that be thought, rather than have two or three short entries, why not ask what a mixed sporting audience thought?

First of all, the red ribbons on the FA Cup. Now my mum is a Chelsea die-hard so when there was a distinct lack of winners' blue on the trophy at the weekend questions were asked. Many of you also took the time to e-mail BBC Sport and point out that, evidently, we had got it wrong.

Here's what happened: The ribbons are red because it is the official colour of the Cup sponsors, E.ON. It is a contractual commitment that we display the Trophy as it is provided to us by the FA. We have no control over the choice of ribbons that are used.

Alarmingly, nobody picked up on Brentford being utterly ignored in the second round draw. Ball 40 was Luton Town. Just Luton Town.

Now, the Hatters are likely to tonk us in the replay at Griffin Park, but to completely ignore the Bees was, well... Someone else could have noticed, surely? I wonder what our Chairman, my old boss, thought.

Thank you to those who took Adrian's plea on 2 Good 2 Bad to let us know what happened in the Barrow game against Bournemouth, I've passed your e-mails on to Paul Armstrong, Adrian and the team.

As ever, we want to know your thoughts on the weekend's coverage. What did (or didn't) you like about our FA Cup coverage? What are your pick of the second round ties? (Brentford v Forest, no?)

Several Everton fans were annoyed at the lack of coverage their UEFA Cup exploits received on Football Focus and one Northern Ireland fan e-mailed several times to point out recognition of his boys across the weekend's football.

So I had a chinwag with Steve Boulton, Football Focus editor, who told me that Football Focus only held the rights to show Aberdeen from the UEFA Cup last week.

However, we tried our best to secure the competition's remaining British clubs. In the end we were able to show Bolton and Spurs but not Everton. We did verbally mention Everton's result in our round-up.

We covered England on editorial value. McClaren's future was made gloomier with the news of Rooney being out for four weeks. Likewise, Scotland's top two had played in the Champions' League so we discussed this and the fact that Celtic and Rangers were not playing at the weekend because of Scotland's historic clash with Italy this Saturday.

Rest assured, this weekend Northern Ireland's chances ahead of their games with Denmark and Spain will be discussed on the 'Focus.

Are we giving fair coverage of Northern Ireland on Football Focus? If most of the news stories are coming from the Scotland and England campaigns, are we right to follow them?

But, take in a deep breath and rejoice, Britain has a new world champion. Joining Joe Calzaghe, James Toseland, Paula Radcliffe and Justin Rose is Daryl Peach, world pool champion.

I had spent most of Saturday trying to keep up with Daryl's efforts across several television broadcasters, but any frustration at a lack of exposure was extinguished by the great news of his win.

Though you would be forgiven for missing his triumph many of you, including Daryl's uncle, e-mailed to ask where the coverage was.

Short answer, it was here.

BBC Lancashire also got to have a few words with Daryl after his magnificent win.

In direct response to your requests for coverage we've got the report up on our Snooker page now but this is a problem we have with sports that have less public attention. Take a look down the left side of the BBC Sport frontpage - we have the 'majors' there - and the category Other Sport (American Football to Winter Sports) but, for instance, no place for Pool which, Daryl's magnificent win aside, has little regular content to gain a regular online audience.

Would pool fans mind a spot on our Snooker pages when needed? Would snooker fans mind?

Previously, people have asked for more canoeing coverage but felt patronised when it is included within our Rowing pages, but are there enough of you out there interested in canoeing? What about the World Chess Championship (which we didn't cover)? Could we realistically cover Aussie Rules and expect people to favour our online coverage over established broadcasters?

If we were to cover a less-well-known sport in more depth, would it be pool? What about water polo, normal polo, bicycle polo, kabaddi, surfing, futsal, 5-a-side, ten-pin bowling, beach football, karate, lacrosse, tae kwon do, judo or mixed martial arts? (Personally, I'd love to see some rock-climbing.) But at the expense of what?

Just because they are hugely popular should fishing and dog-racing have a place online on BBC Sport?

On the topic, did you see this on Inside Sport?

Thanks once more to all of you who welcomed the opportunity to watch Calzaghe's fight against Kessler again, you're welcome. Boxing rights are some of the hardest to secure and the team behind the re-run were chuffed at the response. No promises about what the future may hold, but all known coverage details are published on this page, which is updated as soon as further information is confirmed.

And finally, to Kate, I've no idea where Alan Shearer's shirt (on Match of the Day 2) was from, though we are investigating. I may pick one up as well. And a pair of Ian Wright's smart loafers.

Going that extra 26.2 miles

I'm Michael Cole and I'm the editor of live athletics.

The Great North Run normally signals the end of a pretty sustained period of athletics coverage on BBC TV, but following Paula Radcliffe's decision to take part in the New York Marathon we have an addition to our usual schedule. We'll be showing live coverage of both the men's and women's races on BBC TWO on Sunday 4 November.

By and large the plans for what is covered on TV are made well in advance. Long term rights contracts, negotiations with BBC ONE and TWO for airtime as well as the relatively high cost of delivering TV coverage mean that, on the whole, TV does not react with the same speed and news agenda as BBC radio sport or the BBC Sport website.

But fortunately we were able to look down the back of the sofa to find a bit of cash, do a deal with the race organisers and find some room in the BBC TWO schedule, so now the planning begins. The timing of the New York Marathon works really well for us as, with the time difference, the race actually happens in our afternoon which seems like pretty much the ideal slot.

On the Great North Run or London Marathon the BBC is responsible for providing all the pictures and as a result that gives us the opportunity to follow whichever race is more interesting at a particular time. Normally on an overseas road race we're in the hands of the host broadcaster and have to take what we are given on the World feed. There just wouldn't be room for both BBC and US television to have their own motorbikes following the race, and even if there was, the cost of producing our own dedicated coverage of a marathon would be prohibitive.

So for New York we'll go for a middle ground. We hope to have a position in the back of the outside broadcast van that makes the US TV coverage and access to the individual feeds from their motorbikes and helicopters. While the BBC producer, Helen Kuttner, won't be able to actually direct the cameras she cuts to, hopefully the American camera crew will think of their colonial cousins and we can make the BBC programme reflect a little more on the women's race than the World feed.

What we are not sure about is how much coverage the US TV crew will offer of other British runners taking part. One of our other major hopes for Beijing, Paralympian Shelly Woods, is taking part in the wheelchair race, so hopefully we'll be able to give some coverage of her too.

Hazel Irvine will also be out in New York to speak to Paula before and after the race and back in London, Sue Barker will present the show with Brendan Foster and Steve Cram adding their expert insight and commentary.

Where are the Rangers highlights?

We hope you have been enjoying watching the online highlights from the Scottish Premier League. It's great to be able to offer lots of new video content on the BBC Sport site every week.

But we have had several e-mails today asking why the goal-fest at Ibrox on Saturday isn't already available on our site.

Firstly, our apologies for not making clear in advance that this would happen - it must have looked odd that there was one game missing!

To explain, our contract with the SPL allows us to put up to five minutes of highlights online for most of the Saturday matches from 6pm onwards on the Sunday.

However, where there is an early Setanta match on a Saturday, we must wait until after midnight on the Sunday before posting the highlights online. Also, where Scottish Television has covered a Saturday match as an outside broadcast, we cannot put the highlights on our site until midnight on the Monday, after Scottish Television's Scotsport programme has gone out on TV. These outside broadcasts are normally matches involving either Celtic or Rangers playing at home.

Each week we will make a point of indicating when each of the games will be available online. Apologies again for not making it clearer today.

All nine goals will be available from midnight tonight for all those who want to see them!
