Autumnwatch Unsprung round-up week seven

Hope you all enjoyed Unsprung on Friday. It was so nice for all of us to have Bill back and I hope you all loved having him on too. If you missed the show you can still catch up on iPlayer.

For me one of the highlights of the show, and for that matter the whole series, had to be the stunning starling footage. It was filmed on the Shannon River in Ireland by Sophie Windsor Clive and Liberty Smith. (Watch their longer version of the encounter here.) Starling roosts and murmurations like this have to be one of the great wildlife spectacles in the country and this is the perfect time to see them.

Starling roost © DorsetBirder

We've started a discussion on where to see starlings so you can share your experiences and locations with each other, so please do get involved. This week we'd love to see your starling photos so add your murmuration photos on photo group discussion. Please let us know where they were taken and it would also be fun to hear if you think you can see anything in the images. There's no doubting Dorset Birder's shot (above), taken on Saturday in Weymouth, is quite clearly a mushroom. Or how about this one taken by Numanarchist over Leighton Moss near Lancaster, of starlings doing a rather convincing Loch Ness Monster.

The quiz blog post is still live so if you haven't had a go take a look. It's a fun one this week, and no peaking at the answers that are already there. Congratulations to everyone who got all four. We thought the last one was pretty tricky so it was surprising how many of you got it right.

Thanks to everyone who sent in their giant spider pictures. We're very happy to crown our champion spider from Les Abbott with a monster 14.2cm giant, but a very honourable mention should also go to Alan Fletcher in 2nd place with 13.4cm and Alan from Essex in 3rd place with 12.5cm. Oh and who enjoyed the fluffy wuffy red squirrels this week?

Jay © David Cookson

One of our questions on Friday's show came from Jac Mun who was wondering why jays are so colourful. If you think about all our native corvids (crows, rooks, jackdaws, ravens, magpies and choughs) they're all various shades of black and white. So why is only one member of the family so radically different? Have any of you got any ideas? We'd love to hear your thoughts.

It's the last show in the run this Friday... I know, we are all just as devastated. It would be great to hear what your favourite Unsprung moment has been? As ever the best thing to do is post your thoughts here.

Awesome autumn starling spectacles!

Many of you have been reporting seeing huge starling murmurations already this year. For the unitiated, murmurations are when flocks of starlings come together around dusk wheeling and turning to create amazing shapes across the early evening sky.

A murmuration in Blackpool © Jackie Moreton

It looks like the weather this weekend will provide the right conditions for this behaviour so we've got together a list of the best places to spot murmurations this autumn.

Although it's impossible to perfectly predict the incidences of these murmurations, most sites will have their peak activity across late November and early December. So if you can't get out this weekend then try doing it in the next month or so.

The Somerset Levels in the south-west of England have some of the largest murmurations across the country. These will be visible from now until the end of February. RSPB Ham Wall has currently been seeing around 25,000 but expects to see about two million in December, and nearby Shapwick Heath NNR has records of over six million. Somerset Wildlife Trust's Westhay Moor has a starling murmuration hotline you can call to find out where to see them.

This starling surge was seen at Ham Wall © Neil Parker

Last year we heard that Davidstow Moor in north Cornwall receives thousands of starlings in December.

Brighton Pier and Blackpool pier as well as Marton Mere on the south coast receive tens of thousands of starlings up until the end of December.

The Fen Drayton Lakes in Cambridgeshire have six to seven thousand starlings in murmurations which last around 25minutes. They recommend you arrive at 4pm to be sure you catch it. These will continue until mid December.

RSPB Leighton Moss in Carnforth, Lancashore is peaking now with around 110,000 starlings flocking.

RSPB Minsmere, Suffolk, is also peaking now at 15,000.

The Newport wetlands and surrounds in Wales are currently getting around 40,000 and expecting 50,000 on top of that in December.

Aberystwyth Pier in mid Wales has a spectacular roost of starlings which Chris and Kate visited for Autumnwatch last year.

Malltraeth Marsh near Anglesey is currently getting 200,000 and expecting 250,000 in the next few weeks until December.

RSPB Saltholme in Middlesborough has murmurations fo 30,000 birds but likely to have more in December.

This amazing murmuration was spotted near Gretna from the B7076 © Jim Duncan

Gretna Green in Dumfries and Galloway is expecting hundreds of thousands during their peak in December and definitely has some of the most spectacular murmurations in the north of the UK.

Belfast City Centre has flocks of around 30,000 until late December.

Share your murmuration hotspots by commenting below and watch out for some spectacular starling footage in this week's Unsprung. Of course we'd love to see your photos too so pop them into the Autumnwatch Photo group here.

Coming up on Unsprung: Bill is Back!

So, yes, the rumours are true... Bill is back. We're delighted to say that Sir Oddie of Birding will be joining us for this week’s Unsprung. If you’ve got any questions for Bill then post them here and we’ll try to get through as many as possible in the show.

What else is coming up this week? Well we’ll be wrapping up our search for the UK’s biggest house spider, ever, so this is your last chance to get your photos in. We’ll be challenging Chris with some more poo which you have so very kindly sent us in the post. (A little warning on the outside of the packet might be nice in the future!) There’ll also be some great info about where to see starling roosts: one of our finest and most wonderful autumn spectacles.

As the series draw to end, just two more shows to go, it would be great to hear what was your favourite Unsprung moment? Again post your thoughts here.

Another big thanks to everyone who’s got involved in the show so far and please keep all your questions, photos and videos coming.

Week six! How time flies. We hope you enjoyed last week's show. If you missed it you can watch Unsprung on BBC iPlayer here.

If you haven't already, have a go at the quiz here.

We love getting good news and this week we had an update from our friends at Secret World who brought Casper the barn owl onto the show in week four. After our call out for other young barn owls a sanctuary in Swindon got in touch with Secret World and the two owls have now been united for the winter. Look how much Casper's plumage has changed in just two weeks!

The united owls. Casper who appeared on Unsprung programme four is on the right.

You might also remember that way back in week one we featured the story of some adorable red squirrel kittens who were being hand reared by Eileen Welsh from The Sanctuary Wildlife Care Centre in Northumberland.

Eileen has recently let us know that the squirrels have successfully been released into a pen built in the area they were first discovered. They will spend the winter in the pen while they learn to forage and will be released in the spring. They have also been visited by other red squirrels from the area which is positive. Here are some of her photos to tell the tale.

The squirrels' new pen is designed to prepare them for the wild.

Every week on Unsprung we've been rounding off the programme by telling you to get out there and get involved with wildlife on the weekends. There are loads of Autumnwatch activities on BBC Things to do. All you have to do is go to their web page and type in your postcode.

If you've got any questions for next week's Unsprung let us know by commenting below. We love seeing your pictures of autumn wildlife so add them to the Autumnwatch photo group, or if you're more handy with a camcorder then upload your wildlife home movies.

Your ladybird questions answered

We've been aware that tons of you have been asking about ladybirds. It's at this time of year, as autumn draws on, that suddenly we're seeing huge number congregating and invading our homes. Also a lot of you will be aware of, and have been asking about, the harlequin ladybird, a recent invading species, and how that's doing.

We'll, I took your question and posed them to Dr Remy Poland, a leading ladybird expert and Biology teacher at Clifton College in Bristol.

Coming up on Unsprung: Ask Iolo a question

Hi Everyone,

The week draws on and in a blink of an eye it will be Friday again, which I'm sure you're all looking forward to with baited breath. We're busy as unusual here in Unsprung corner. There's stills lots to organise for this weeks show but I think you're really going to enjoy the results!

Iolo Williams heads out in search of fin whales for Autumnwatch this week.

So what have we got? Well, our favourite Welsh wildlife hero Iolo Williams will be joining us in the studio. Iolo is this week's guest presenter, and as I write he's off in search of fin whales, one of the most ambitious Autumnwatch shoots ever attempted. So fingers crossed you'll be seeing these glorious animals, the second largest whale on the planet, in this week's show.

It would be great to get your questions for Iolo, whether they're about his filming this week, or his other adventures. Also we'd love to get a question or two for him in Welsh, so all you Welsh speakers out there get your thinking caps on and post them below.

Keep your spider pictures coming: remember we're on the hunt for the largest house spider in the country so you absolutely must include a coin or ruler for a sense of scale. And for you arachnophobes out there, fear not, we'll be distracting you with your very own little treat.

One other thing, we noticed a lot of people were asking about ladybirds so I took all your questions and met up with one of the country's leading ladybird experts, and we'll be posting that video later in the week.

So keep your questions coming: commenting below is the best way to get them noticed; there's the photo group for all your pictures (we'll be featuring a load of these this week) and the video uploader is still live for your wildlife home movies.

Thanks to everyone who's taken part so far, we can't make the show with out you all!

Autumnwatch Unsprung round-up week five

We're over half way! We hope you enjoyed last week's show - we certainly did. If you missed it you can watch Unsprung on BBC iPlayer here.

Doesn't our new location look stunning? Here's a shot researcher Sam took during our rehearsals on the night of the first Slimbridge show.

Behind the scenes at our new WWT location.

This week's quiz took the form of a stained glass bird collection. If you haven't already given it a go it's still live.

With our new location comes an exciting new tea cosy crocheted by Autumnwatch enthusiast Lynne Hardman. Here's its beauty shot.

The glorious swan tea cosy crocheted by Lynne Hardman

We had lots of fantastic questions, pictures and videos from you all last week and one of our favourites was from Ian W who wanted to know why these geese were flying upside down! This behaviour is called whiffling and wildfowl often do this when coming into land. As Chris said, when they turn their bodies upside down they become very unaerodynamic allowing them to drop quickly from the sky.

We're on the hunt for the UK's biggest house spider. If you think you've got it then post your spider picture here with a coin or ruler for scale. Here is our graph of your spiders so far.

The UK's Biggest Spider Graph so far...

Thomas (aged 6) wanted to know what the loudest bird call is. It's thought that the farthest carrying bird call in the UK comes from the bittern. A bittern's booming call can be heard up to three miles away. (Watch a clip of a bittern booming from the BBC's archives here.) Where most birds use their voicebox syrinx to make their call the bittern actually makes its sound by expelling air through its oesophagus.

The loudest bird in the world is thought to be the superb lyrebird which also has the most extraordinary ability to mimic other bird songs and even man-made sounds. You can watch an awesome clip of a lyrebird's repertoire here. Chris also noted that nightingales can sing extraordinarily loudly and scientists in Berlin once recorded one at 95 decibels - that's outside the European sound pollution regulation limits!

And finally, we featured a lot of your videos this week and here's our favourite from John Tattersall:

Coming up on Unsprung 4 November

Richard Taylor-Jones, Unsprung's special guest this week

Friday is rapidly approaching so I thought I’d give you a quick heads-up of what to look forward to on this week’s Unsprung. As ever we’ve got a packed show, with loads of your questions, comments and photos. We’ll also be featuring some of your particularly fascinating and rather hilarious wildlife home movies.

I’m also delighted to say that guest presenter for the week Richard Taylor-Jones will be joining Chris, Michaela and Martin on the Unsprung sofa. Richard has made some delightful films about a mysterious group of seals in Kent, his neck of the woods. If you’ve got any questions for Richard (or for the rest of the team) about seals then post them here.

Richard’s also the producer of all the guest presenters we’ve had on the series so far. He’s a very talented wildlife cameraman and director so if you’ve got any questions about any of these things, again the easiest thing to do is post them here.

I know a lot of you have been concerned for hedgehogs as the winter draws nearer and particularly with bonfire night this weekend. We’ll be having some hedgehog experts on the show to address any questions. So get posting those hedgehog questions too.

Just quickly following on from last week’s show we’ve done a video, again featuring the multi-skilled researcher Sam, posing lots of your questions to Nick ‘Bug Boy’ Baker. There’s also been some great news about the barn owl chick we featured last Friday… but you’ll have to watch this week to hear that!

And keep your giant spider pictures coming. We've set up a special discussion on the photo group for you to post them too. Do try and get a ruler, or something for scale, in the picture too.

Keep it all coming, we can’t make the show without you so please get involved.

Autumnwatch Unsprung round-up week four: Spiders, fungi, frogs and bugs!

We hope you enjoyed last week's Unsprung. If you missed it you can catch up on the BBC iPlayer here. We pack so much in every week that if you blink (or nip out to put the kettle on) you can easily miss something. So here's a round up of last week's show.

We had a spooky quiz this week in the form of a skulls spectacular. If you want to have a go at it, go to the Unsprung quiz.

Lots of you had reported seeing birds nesting now which seems unusually late. Big Chris saw swallows on the nest on 8 October, Jane Rees saw a pair of magpies building a nest two weeks ago and Jim Mercer fillmed some young ducklings last week.

Our Chris explained that some species such as collar doves, blackbirds and barn owls do breed in every month of the year and Pauline from Secret World brought in an extraordinary find: an orphaned young barn owl that was rescued in Somerset.

An orphaned barn owl visited the show from Secret World

Pauline was putting out a request for any other young barn owls in captivity that might join this orphan to help their release. Since the show Pauline has been in touch to let us know that she may indeed have found another owl to help with her orphan's release. Tune in to next week's show for the latest update.

Our group of the week, the Avon Bat Group asked us some great questions:
Joe asked what is the largest fungi in Britain? This question is a tricky one as what many people don't realise is that the fruiting body, the bit we see above ground, is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to fungi.

The fruiting body is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to fungi. Image © Jenn Turner

Chris mentioned the world record holding fruiting body that used to exist at Kew Gardens. This measured over four metres in diameter but was actually knocked off the top spot this summer when a giant fungus was discovered in china which weighed half a tonne!

In terms of the entire fungus, however, the largest ever recorded fungus was discovered in Oregon, USA. It spanned across 8.9 square kilometres or about 2,200 acres! This honey fungus was discovered in 1998 and is thought by some to be the largest known living organism ever recorded. We get honey fungi here in the UK and the chances are that the largest individual fungus that we have here is a honey fungus.

Richard asked how far frogs travel since he gets them in his garden and there's no water nearby. Frogs don't actually need to be in ponds and river the entire time. They go to water to breed and lay eggs but otherwise they're quite happy just to be near damp habitats. You can find them up to about a kilometre away from ponds and rivers. Also at this time of year they will be out and about searching for places to spend the winter.

They'll find a damp spot and hunker down to lie dormant through the cold months, coming out in good weather to forage. Although some do go to the bottom of ponds to do this, many will seek out crevices under logs and rockeries (or your shed!) and in your compost heaps.

This spider was found and added to our photo group by Rachael Marie.

We were also pretty arachnid-tastic this week with Nick 'Bug Boy' Baker starring alongside some of his leggier friends!

We've launched a challenge to find Britain's biggest spider so if you spot an eight-legged arachnid in your house you can get involved. Just grab a coin or ruler, drop it next to the spider and snap a picture. Then post your picture on the Autumnwatch Photo Group and let us know in the Britain's Biggest Spider discussion.

If you've got any questions for next week's Unsprung let us know by commenting below. We love seeing your pictures of autumn wildlife so add them to the Autumnwatch photo group, or if you're more handy with a camcorder then upload your wildlife home movies.
