Sea and Sun

Today at home, sitting in front my computer I remembered a trip I made few years ago, and I think why not share some pictures and experiences I lived in this trip.

I went on December and it was fun, but I dind't feel it, becouse in Mexico City December is cold, there was my first December holiday on the beach.

It all started with the big wish to take my holidays in the beach, I went with my Mom, my uncle and a cousin. We went for a week to Huatulco only for rest, because this place is very quiet.

Huatulco it's locate in Oaxaca, México, a few hours from where I live, we took an airplane but It was late, so we have to spend a lot of time in the airport, that was terrible because the only we want was swam in the beach, after the time we spend finally we arrived, bit tired but happy.

When we get there the only things we made was, ate, swam and sleep! (well, most of the time we do that) but one day we decided to knew some beaches around, magical places with a lot of vegetation, clear beaches, sunny days... in some of this beaches you have to ask for permission to swim or camp there, because the government take care a lot this beaches.

The most famous is Tangolunda, the surf beaches are calm and the water is blue-green. For example Bahía Santa Cruz another beach, it's an ecologic reserve because most of the coral reefs are there. When we took the tour, we stopped in Santa Cruz, there we had the opportunity to dive, for me was an extraordinary experience, I saw thousands of fish, some big, some small and feel they are around of you was really nice.

And well, we knew the downtown of Huatulco, here you can find, restaurants, markets, souvenirs, etc, we only went there in the afternoons only for walked.

Mexican beaches are really beautiful, some are just to rest and others to have fun or maybe have both. Maybe you know or have read about Acapulco, Cancun, Los Cabos, Veracrúz, Mazatlán, etc, I do not know all but I wish go there one day.

I hope you enjoy the pictures.

Food from Mexico

Hi everybody, I received many comments asking about Mexican Food, I have a lot of things to say about it, but it's not only talk about how are the typical dishes, is also talk about how important is sharing the food with family and friends.

I say that because it's one of the most important social activities, we call the lunch time as the "la hora de la comida" (between 2:00 to 4:00 pm, but it depends.) We value the lunch time as familiar, in this hour we can talk with our parents, brothers or friends, today in Mexico City it's difficult to be together in the lunch time at week with family, but it's very common to meet us in the weekend.

Either breakfast, lunch or dinner, food is one of the factors to join the society, in this meetings we can establish friendships, couples known, close big business and the union familiar becomes stronger, or just for enjoy a good moment.

The typical ingredients use for Mexican Food are corn this is the most important base in some dishes, sometimes we use dry and hard for prepare tortillas, tamales, sopes but also we use it fresh to eat elote, we use to, wheat, rice, flour to prepare bread, beans, a lot of vegetables, nopal, chicken, pork meat, meat, and a lot of different species for food flavor.

I really love Mexican food, one day somebody ask me about if it's easy to find Tacos, well specially in Mexico City is very easy.

We have a lot of puestos in the street or maybe in a restaurants smaller and bigger, to eat tacos it doesn't matter the hour, but it's common in the morning enjoy Tacos de canasta (basket Tacos) this kind of tacos are prepare with potato, beans, chicharrón, there are small, in the morning you can eat tacos de barbacoa, are prepare with sheep meat,

But I think the most famous tacos are Pastor, this are with pork meat and spicy we called axiote, and it's extraordinary the way are served. It's a big meat spin, and in the top has pineapple, so the chef cut slices of meat and pineapple and put in the tortilla, on meat we put chopped onion, coriander, lemon and of course very chilly green or red sauce.

Tacos are a traditional way of eating, in the lunch time we accompany the food with tortillas, even if we eat scrambled eggs we eat in a taco, chili and sauces is another supplement that cannot miss.

I'm going to tell you what Mexican food I love to eat and some photos of the dishes.

For example in a raining day I really enjoy eat Pozole it's a dish from Guerrero (has a lot of varieties) it's a soup with corn looks like a popcorn and pork meat, accompanied with chopped lettuce, radish, onion, oregano, piquin chili, and tostadas (hard tortilla).

Tamales and mole are another typical an traditional meal, tamales are, involved in corn of banana leaf, are made with corn and can come in many flavors like, green sauce, red sauce, mole, beans, and are prepared with chicken or pork meat. Mole it's very difficult to prepare because it has a lot of ingredients and many spices, but it's very easy to find already prepare so you only have to buy it and heat. We usually eat mole with chicken and rice or in enchiladas are tortillas covered with mole and inside the tortilla we put shredded chicken and in the top cheese, chopped onion and cream.

I have a lot of dishes that I love to eat, one of the most I really enjoy to eat but like a snack it´s elote, baked corn, first you have to put the corn on a stick and then you covered the corn with mayoneza, cheese and chili, it's really delicious. , the variety of our bread is extensive, Sometimes in the dinner or breakfast I prepare a torta it's like a sandwich because we used ham, cheese, tomatoes, onion, chili, beans whatever you want to put inside but we use a different type or bread, we use bolillo, also our bread could be sweet and you can accompany with a glass of milk or coffee, some pieces of bread has strange names like, concha, chilindrinas, corbatin, other are most common like panque, donuts, but it's a long list of sweet bread.

Taking about food it's a big topic I hope I have given an idea what we eat, maybe some day you have the opportunity to try some or looking in internet more dishes, but if I can write more about this let me know.

XOCHIMILCO- Trajineras- mariachis

I want to share, another attractive place, "Xochimilco".

It's locate in the South of Mexico City, it's very attractive for tourist, here you can find beautiful scenic sites, like market of flowers, trajineras, typical food, museums and churches.

Xochiilco has 9 lakes for enjoy and navigate in his famous trajineras. Trajinera it's like a small boat. In the past the use was to transport the crops farmers, and rich people who started visit the lake.

The first trajineras was decorated with floral arches, garlands of flowers placed in front. In that time the rich people complained about the sun, and they adapted a roof and chairs to enjoy the beautiful landsacape. Every trajiera have a name,(Maria, Lupita, Juanita...) this names was put rich people to celebrate someone with that's names or adorn the name of one of his girlfriends.

Xochimilco in that time was named "Lugar de Jardines Flotantes" - Stead of floating gardens, for his variety of colorful flowers.

Today trajinera was suffered some transformations for example, the flowers in the front are paint in paper mache and the roof is made of laminated.

Mexicans or turist people go to Xochimilco to take a ride, maybe for celebrate and special day or only to have fun with friends or family, if you go with many people and not fit in a single trajinera the drivers join one more. This little trip takes 2 or more hours, you can bring food, drinks, music, or you can buy these services along the way.

In the way you can find food like quesadillas and music our typical mariachis.

Mariachis is a genre of music that originated in the State of Jalisco, Mexico, as an ensemble created during the colonial period, mariachi music has become emblematic of Mexican music.

The mariachi ensemble generally consists of violins, trumpets, an acoustic guitar, the group conformed by 7 to 12 persons. They dress in silver studded charro outfits with wide-brimmed hats.

The costume to hire mariachis it's for celebrate special events, like mothers days, used to serenade women, weddings, etc. The musical forms are rancheras, ballads, some of the famous authors and interpreters of these songs are José Alfredo Jiménez, Rubén Fuentes, Pedro Infante...

Many mariachis are professional entertainers, today we have famous singers of this genre such as Vicente Ferández, Alejandro Fernández, Pepe Aguilar an many others.

But you don't only find mariachis in Xochimilco, can be found in different places at night. In Mexico City, you can find a lot of mariachis in Plaza Garibaldi, locate in the downtown the prices to hire can vary immensely and are normally not cheap, but it's the best you can hire.

For finish I can't forget to say our typical yell "grito mexicano"
-"AY YA YAY YA"...(introduce the song, done by musicians or audience).

We celebrate Mother's day

We have different ways to celebrate Mums, maybe it depends the families, but the most common is make a family meal, in this kind of parties we share different dishes and Moms choose what they want to eat.

Some families make a big party, with a lot of people and sometimes hire mariachis to give him "serenata", flowers is a typical present to give.

The sons, especially when they are little like 3 to 9 years prepare in the school different activities, named "festival". Some kids dance, sing, tell poems, and give some present made by them.

That was the most common for celebrate moms. I know it's not a big blog, but I only want to share this special day,

But now I have to celebrate my Mom, and congratulations all the Mums, and thanks for always being with us and for all the love they give us.

Soon I'm going to write more about Mexico and me.

Break away from the City

Sometimes it's necessary take a break, relax and forget the routine, so I know of an excellent place to do it outside the city. It's a beautiful place and I really enjoy going there.

The name of this place is Tepoztlán. It is located 71 km south of Mexico City and here you can find a lot of different meals, beautiful landscapes, historical buildings, local souvenirs, and places that give massages or read your aura, etc... it's like a mystical and magical place.

The weather most of the time is very hot, and I have to give you some recommendations if you go.

 1. Use sun block
2. Wear comfortable clothes, sunglasses and a hat
3. Drink a lot of water

I give you this recommendation because I ended up with sunstroke.

I'm going to tell you how my trip started. When we got there we were really starving, so we decided to have breakfast and when we go to tepoztlan we usually eat "quesadillas" in the market. In Mexican words we say "desayuno en el puesto de quesadillas".

In Mexico it's very common to eat in the market, but these kinds of markets not only sell food but you can buy clothes, flowers, everything you can imagine. These markets are in the streets or some are established in a big place, and "puesto" it's a very informal place established inside the market, and the "puesto" is where people exhibit their merchandise.

Perhaps not many know what a quesadilla is; it's a typical meal because the main ingredient is corn. With the corn we make tortillas and this is the base of quesadillas.

The basic quesadilla: tortilla with oaxaca cheese. Inside the tortilla you put the cheese and you have to wait until it melts. Then you can choose different ingredients to add to your quesadilla, like mushrooms, chicken, squash blossom, meat, potatoes, etc... and don't forget a delicious sauce.

We love a specific puesto in Tepoztlan, that's because the owner who prepares it, makes a lot of different sauces, for example: pineapple with habanero chilli, green tomato sauce, morita chili sauce, peanut sauce, coriander sauce etc...

A famous quesadilla in Tepoztlan is prepared with grilled grasshoppers and maybe it sounds and looks awful, but it isn't. Taste crunchy, salty and lemon, I really do not know the exact words to describe it but believe me if you want to try something different you have to do it, for me it's very very tasty.

As I told you in my first blog I love eating and I can't keep quiet and not tell you about our nieves (ice cream without milk or cream.) They are made with natural fruit, and served in glasses of different sizes. My favourites are pitaya and mandarin.

Tepoztlan has a lot of tourist sites, but the main attraction is Tepozteco hill. On the top is a prehispanic building, it's a very energetic place, and it's more attractive for the visitors during "Spring Equinox". To be honest I've never climbed it, I'm too lazy to walk a lot and even more in the sun.

Other important places in Teploztlan, are the Ex-convento de la Natividad which is gorgeous and it was constructed between 1555 and 1558. The village centre is a quiet place, and you can find cultural events, expo-craft, etc.The Carlso Pellicer museum is famous here for the archeological pieces that were found in the ex-convento.

On the main street of Tepoztlan every week-end and days off there is a big market, with a lot of people, and so much typical stuff from Mexico, and some are not so typical.

Another touristic stop is the "Paraje Ecoturístico "la Canasta", this place is beside the Atolongo river, it's fantastic to rest or having a camp day.

In my trip we didn't have time to do all that because one day is not enough time to do everything, but if you have the opportunity to stay for more than one day it's an excellent idea and Tepoztlan has beautiful hotels.

Anyway this trip for me was amazing, I hope you have enjoyed it too.

THANKS FOR THE COMMENTS

Thanks for all the comments; everything you wrote was amazing. In these days I'm going to tell you more about me and my City, and I want to show you some places that you can visit if some day you come.

It's really nice to know that people who lives really far away from here remember Mexico'86, I was a kid when that happen, but everybody here remember well that days, I just seen pictures about that.

Emat, you have to try writing it's a good experience, and you're going to learn more, I have been studied for a long time but my problem was that I never practiced so I forget words, but practicing is the solution.

A comment that makes me surprised comes from Elisabeth from Austria.... First I have to say I'm not an uncovered Austrian! Jaja I'm 100% Mexican girl. Well here my name it's not common and here the diminutive of Maria its Mary.

I have a little story about my name... one day I asked my mom where did you get my name, what's the meaning for and where it's come from? And she said "when I was pregnant the name came to my head, and I told to your father, I want to name the baby Mitzi, so they started looking the name in books, and one day they found that comes from Vienna and meaning Maria".

For a long time a lot of people asked me the meaning, but I never was sure about it, because I never found more information, and now I know more about my name that's really good, finally I can say more than a simple Maria, Thanks for telling me that.

I look forward reading you're comments.

From Mexico to everyone

Hi everyone, i was thinking and thinking how I could start to writing for the first time in this blog, after a long time, I do, so I decided to star with the story as I am now blogger from BBC LEARNING.

I take English classes twice a week in the office, and Jo my teacher (She's from England) showed us the BBC LEARNING web page to practice and I saw the student's blog and the opportunity to improve and practice English, so I decided to write. After a few weeks I don't know exactly when I received a mail for Nuala, this notice made me feel surprised but at the same time exiting, because she told me that no one had ever written from Mexico. Nuala asked me for a response if I want to be the May blogger, I didn't think the answered twice, I'm really happy to write and share this experience with all of you.

That was the story and now it's time to introduce myself. I'm Mitzi Flores, as you know I'm from Mexico City, I work in an international company. I live with my mom, Ihave to brothers, y younger brother lives in monterrey in the north of Mexico. My middle brother lives in the city, and ther're merried, by the way I have two little and charmy nephews, one of them born the las year.

I look forward my weekends to spend time with my family, boyfriend and friends to do different things of the week. Fortunately in Mexico we have a lot of places to go, like restaurants, restaurant bar, cinemas, theaters, cultural places, expositions for free and some we have to pay for, etc.

But the most I enjoyed doing is, cooking, eating and watching movies.

All this month I hope share many things about Mexico, this is an extraordinary place to live and visit, we have a lovely crazy weather (most of the time it's really good the weather),a lot of traditions, culture, the most of the people here are friendly, it's a nice place, but it would be nice to say Mexico today is a bigger city with a lot of traffic, people everywhere, and sometimes this causes stress, and we are always running, but in spite of this Mexico is lovely.

Before I finished I want to thank BBC Learnig for the opportunity and thank Jo because she showed me the web site.
