It was 'leap' day on Monday, so I needed something really special for my first BBC Introducing LIVE session of 2016... I got it, as you can see. Bossy Love are one of my tips for 2016 (check out full list of 25 is here) and quite frankly one of the most exciting bands on the planet IMHO!

Seeing their second ever show in October 2015 in Edinburgh, I was blown away by the sassy, sexy mix of street-smart hip-hop, funk, r'n'b, punk attitude and downright pop hooks. I wanted them in the studio ASAP and was delighted to get them - I've been telling all and sundry about how incredible they are.

Centered around Amandah on vocals and John on drums, with newbie Ollie added on keyboards; the band delivered a sucker-punch of three sweet, soulful session tracks LIVE on my BBC Radio Scotland show. We filmed it and you can now witness the energy and the band's raw talents for yourself. 'Body' kicked off, set the tone and had us jigglin' our jiggly-bits (watch it above); 'Sweat It Out' upped the anti, increased the heat and got us hot under the collar; then their Kelis and Andre 3000 cover 'Millionaire' sealed the deal - they made it their own.

What a band, what a session, what a way to start our BBC Introducing sessions in 2016... On the 29th February, our hearts certainly did 'leap' with joy for Bossy Love!

There is so much diverse and eclectic music across genres being made in Scotland right now, but I am particularly pleased at how many talented women are stepping forward. Many of my favourite new acts in Scotland are female solo artists or bands that feature women in strong creative roles and up front in the mix.

One of these groups is Bdy_Prts. Originally a duo of Jenny Reeves of Strike the Colours and Jill O'Sullivan of Sparrow & the Workshop, they have now added drummer and electronics programmer Jonny Scott, who has played with a wide range of Scottish acts including Emma Pollock, Olympic Swimmers and The Unwinding Hours, and manager/guitarist Scott Paterson (formerly of Sons & Daughters) to their LIVE set-up. The results, as you can tell, are remarkable... As you would expect with such a heritage of world-class groups behind them.

But Bdy_Prts are a very different, and rather more shiny, beast! Taking synths, electronica, 90's R'n'B, indie and even some folk touches, their sound miraculously transports you to future-pop dimension where hooks, melodies, beats and bleeps collide; and synchronized dance-moves, day-glo outfits are glittery ponchos are definitely the order of the day - they even dressed me in a 'space taco' for our customary group shot.
They're good for you, are Happy Meals. The Glasgow duo's woozy techno, tropical disco and cosmic torch-songs are bright, escapist and uplifting, as showcased in their recent glorious BBC Introducing live session.

Sonic voyagers Suzanne Rodden (who sings in French and English) and Lewis Cook (The Cosmic Dead, Mother Ganga, Yahweh) only formed Happy Meals in 2014, but they've already bagged a Scottish Album of the Year Award nomination for their debut album, Apero, which was issued last November via Night School Records (Julia Holter, The Space Lady).

The duo launched their session with a radiant take on one of Apero's stand-out tracks (which you can watch above) – the slow-burning, celestial 'Crystal Salutation' – flanked by banks of analogue trickery, synths and mics and amber light.

Honing their penchant for super sonic deviations, Happy Meals followed this with a cover of a song by folk-rock legend Gordon Lightfoot: they re-animated the Canadian country king's 1970 classic, 'If You Could Read My Mind', as a gorgeous astral synth lament. (Listen back and you'll hear why Lightfoot once brought a plagiarism lawsuit against the writers of Whitney Houston's 'The Greatest Love of All'...)
After a chat with the band, which variously touched on musical escapism, the influence of Orange Juice, and the liberating benefits of belting out Devo songs – not to mention the time they played inside a glass office, surrounded by statues, in a winter park, in Moscow – Rodden and Cook served up a thrilling electro pass-it-on track, courtesy of 'Everybody's Night', from 1980s synth-wave trailblazers Deux.

And they treated us to another (extra) sensory delight from Apero, thanks to 'Altered Images' (which you can watch above), a synth-funk disco-chanson trip that spotlit Rodden's bilingual vocals, which – like Happy Meals themselves – are ice cool, white hot, enlivening, and wonderful.

It never ceases to astonish and delight me that Glasgow, and indeed Scotland, is continually packed full of brilliant music across genres. Almost every week I welcome a band into the studio for a LIVE set and our BBC Introducing sessions are always hugely exciting. It's a chance to showcase genuinely new music. In May 2015 my guests were a 6-piece who effortlessly mix indie, folk and electronics; juxtaposing the electric, digital and acoustic on some beautiful, heartfelt songs.

Calling themselves 'Kill The Waves', and giving me a hilarious if rather dubious explanation as to why on air, they have just released their debut album 'The One That Could Have Been' via fledgeling label Bloc+Music in their home city. It's a wondrous collection of epic, sprawling songs full of melodic twists and production thrills. From whirring, glitchy laptop noises to luscious strings via anthemic songwriting; you can get lost in the record. Hence the reason we invited them to showcase their wares in our glorious BBC Scotland studios.

As is customary, they performed 3 songs LIVE on air, including 2 - The Oak Tree and Deadwave - from the aforementioned album and a cover version. Not every band steps up to the plate when we ask if they'll attempt a cover, but KTW did and totally smashed it, with a melancholy take on Sia's Elastic Heart (take a look above). Have a watch and a listen to all 3 tracks, then see why we asked them onto the show.
After the phenomenal success of our BBC at the Quay festival in Glasgow during last year's Commonwealth Games, we’ve decided to do it again! On Sunday 7th June, I'm delighted to say there's a full day dedicated to BBC Introducing from the pop-up festival site, outside BBC Scotland. The line-up is bursting with brilliance, with a collection of artists set for big things in the future. All the artists playing are from Scotland and have come through the BBC Introducing Uploader on my Radio Scotland show - spanning genres from indie, rock, electronica, hip-hop, pop and acoustic song.

Here's a list of who's playing our outdoor stage:

Honeyblood - Signed to Fatcat Records and nominated for a SAY Award, this female indie-grunge duo have an armoury of amazing songs and a great live show - the perfect headliners!

United Fruit - With their 2nd album of anthemic, hook-filled songs about to drop, these dynamic noise-rockers are fresh from playing SXSW with their trademark full-on live experience.

Throughout the day there will also be DJs, talks and masterclasses. I'll be hosting a Q&A with BBC Introducing success stories Twin Atlantic, and there will be a unique opportunity to take part in a songwriting workshop with homegrown hip-hop heroes Hector Bizerk. We will of course be recording the acts on the main stage for future broadcast and celebrating with highlights shows across BBC Introducing platforms on radio and online. It promises to be great day, showcasing some cutting-edge talent on home turf... I hope to see you there!

A Scottish singer-songwriter with a voice that is equal parts blues, folk and beautiful, Kathryn Joseph has just released her sublime debut album ‘Bones You Have Thrown Me and Blood I've Spilled’. Armed with a small piano and a percussive maestro (Marcus Mackay), she showcased the record in a jaw-dropping live session for BBC Introducing.

On record, Kathryn's songs are exquisite and intimate, and her live set followed suit. She opened with 'The Bird'. It's a fragile airborne aria that left all of us in the studio reeling. Her work has a vintage, timeless feel – you might align it with Joanna Newsom, Antony Hegarty or Karen Dalton – but it is also completely unique.

If her album title reads like a poem, or indeed a tale in itself, then the songs within it scan like chapters – from opener 'The Bird', through (among others) 'The Blood', 'The Want', 'The Bone', 'The Crow', 'The Mouth' and 'The Weary'. And then there's a shadowy torch-song, 'The Outtakes', which Kathryn performed to more quiet rapture, after an interview which touched on her musical relationship with drummer / producer Marcus, her voice, and her piano, and her early days gigging in Aberdeen (you can watch part of that interview below).

She also sang the praises of Hits The Fan records – the label which issued Frightened Rabbit's debut album, Sing The Greys – and which was resurrected especially to release Bones You Have Thrown Me and Blood I've Spilled.

Before a suitably gorgeous pass-it-on track in Low's 'Murderer' (there is kinship between Kathryn's muted drama and that of the Minnesota three), we were treated to a mesmeric rendition of Radiohead's 'Street Spirit (Fade Away)'. If the best covers allow us to hear a song anew – if they cast new depths, and magic, and light – then Kathryn's version did all that. This might have been the first we've heard from her, but it won't be the last.

It's not often we have a band from Caithness pay us a visit in the studio for a LIVE session... in fact this could be the first time! Neon Waltz are a 6-piece outfit fusing psychedelic and indie influences into their pastoral, widescreen sonic palette. They came to my attention earlier this year with the slow-building, atmospheric 'Sombre Fayre', a demo they popped online and emailed to me. It piqued my interest, I duly gave it a spin on air... but I wanted more. With a 7" vinyl single and download of 'Bare Wood Isles' made available, and wonderful performance of 'Sundial' at Freswick Castle, they are drip-feeding their fans and developing a grass-roots following for people looking outside of the current, electro-pop zeitgeist. Having seen the group 3 times across the UK in disparate locations such as Brighton, Edinburgh and Inverness, I can attest for their stage-craft and LIVE intensity as well.

The time was right for a BBC Introducing session, so we invited the guys in. They'd been gigging loads and will soon head out on tour of England in December. So before they headed back up north to bury themselves in the rehearsal room for a month to continue writing for their debut album, we managed to secure the date, the studio and the cameras - it was a green light and GO. Young, focused and eager to do things right, the band arrived on time, chatted away with me, had a photo taken and then sound-checked away in the studio until they and our expert engineers were all happy. As you can see and hear, the results were excellent... They performed the aforementioned 'Bare Wood Isles' first, then a brand new tune 'Behind them all', getting its debut radio exclusive, finishing with a splendid cover of 'Last Living Rose' by PJ Harvey.

It's great to see a band hide away from the crowd, the hipsters, the industry and taste-makers to make their own music on their own terms. Neon Waltz are in no rush to convince or convert the public, but on a mission to do their own thing - quite right too. They're young guys with a shed-load of talent and ambition, and if the future is indeed bright, it might well be neon.

Listen back to the session and find out more about the BBC Radio Scotland Sessions here.

My BBC Introducing session guests for September on BBC Radio Scotland were a Glasgow trio called Machines in Heaven, who I've kept a close eye on since they came to my attention in 2012. Following their excellent 'Glasgow Jihad' EP and proper full-length album 'Bordersbreakdown', I knew they had the skills in the studio and increasingly as a live proposition.Equipped with samplers, sequencers, keyboards and computers (as well as one of those old-fashioned electric guitar things!), they set up and ran through 2 original songs and a cover version on air, alongside some chat about their history, influences and ethos. Bravely they decided to play brand new tracks, 'Hindu Milk' and 'Feel Slow' from a forthcoming EP, rather than tried and tested album tracks.Combining warm, luscious synth textures, throbbing basslines, skittering beats and backwards samples, they twiddled and tweaked away whilst singer Davey manipulated his voice through a vocoder on top.

off a new monthly feature on my weekly BBC Radio Scotland show, I couldn’t
have picked a better band for my debut BBC Introducing LIVE
session. With Saint Max & the Fanatics, from Creetown in Dumfrieshire, here
is a fresh-faced 18 year singer-songwriter backed by equally youthful rhythm
and horn sections, both of whom have the necessary chops and the
skills to pay the bills. Take a soupçon of Blur, a large table-spoonful of
Franz Ferdinand, a sprinkle of Ska and Two-Tone and add a drop or two
of early Smiths and you're getting near to Max's energetic and explosive
new-wave pop.

Dressed in a dapper tweed-jacket (a man after my own heart!) and
a psychedelic shirt and tie combo, he was warm, intelligent, enthusiastic,
chatty and keen to rip through the arranged session tracks which he and
his well-drilled band duly did. Down-to-earth and yet comfortable in front of
the camera, here is a genuine star in the making!
