Back in January, BBC Radio 3 put out a call for classical artists to upload recordings of music by women classical composers via BBC Music Introducing.

We received literally hundreds of incredible responses from up-and-coming composers and performers – some of whom have been chosen to perform live on Radio 3 as part of the station’s International Women's Day 2018 celebrations.

You can hear them on the Radio Lunchtime Concert at 1pm on 8 March – then online for 30 days. Let’s meet the performers...

Tabea Debus – recorder player

Forget that plastic thing you learned at school: German recorder player Tabea plays the real deal. Despite having graduated just a year ago from the Royal Academy of Music, she already has three solo albums under her belt. On IWD 2018 she’ll be showcasing her contemporary music chops by playing Air by Fumiko Miyachi and Two and a Half Minutes to Midnight by Dani Howard.

Yoanna Prodanova – cellist

Bulgarian cellist Yoanna Prodanova is currently studying at the Guildhall School and regularly performs as a soloist and chamber musician across Europe and in Canada. In Thursday’s concert, she’ll play the first movement of a cello sonata by Leokadya Kashperova – one of five 'forgotten' women composers being championed by Radio 3 on International Women’s Day 2018.

Natalie Bleicher – composer and pianist

Natalie Bleicher is a composer, but also plays the piano and has a particular passion for performing contemporary music. On IWD 2018 she’ll perform three pieces by living women composers – Wind Energy (from Our Planet Earth) by Karen Tanaka, Before Time by Issie Barratt and Deine schönen Hände by, er, Natalie Bleicher. Now that’s what we call multi-tasking.

Papagena – vocal ensemble

Papagena is an a cappella vocal group who delight in performing an exceptionally wide range of music, from medieval plainchant to brand new music for female voices. They pride themselves on having “no props, no microphones, no gimmicks: just five stunning voices”. Hear for yourself on 8 March, when they perform a medieval antiphon by Hildegard of Bingen alongside the quirky Jack's Valentine by contemporary American composer Libby Larsen.

Electra Perivolaris – composer

Electra Perivolaris is a Scottish composer and pianist whose music reflects on physical and emotional landscapes and is often inspired by the time she spends walking in remote places. Her piece, Delicate granite rock, crumbling apart in my hands, will be performed on IWD 2018 by a quirky trio comprising soprano saxophone, cello and piano.

Anna Szałucka – pianist

Anna Szalucka is a Polish-born pianist currently studying at the Royal College of Music on the pleasingly-named “Hodgson Fellowship”. You can hear her tinkle the ivories on IWD, when she’ll play the finale from Grazyna Bacewicz’s Piano Sonata No 2 – then, with the Bukolika Piano Trio (piano, violin and cello), Lili Boulanger’s D'un matin de printemps.

On Thursday 8 March, BBC Radio 3 celebrate International Women’s Day 2018 with an entire day of music composed by women – including a live concert by up-and-coming musicians from BBC Music Introducing.

It’s International Women’s Day on Thursday 8th March and all day BBC Radio 3 will be playing music composed by women. To celebrate, BBC Music Introducing is teaming up with Radio 3 to find unsigned, undiscovered and under the radar female classical composers. We also welcome recordings from up-and-coming musicians and ensembles (of any gender) who perform music by women composers, whether past or present.

As well as playing recorded tracks, we’ll be inviting performers into the BBC studios on 8th March to give a live Radio 3 lunchtime concert of music by women composers. If you would like to get involved upload your music and performances to bbc.co.uk/introducing and select ‘Classical’ as your genre.

The closing date is Thursday 8 February 2018 (one month before International Women's Day).

This is isn’t the first time that BBC Music Introducing and BBC Radio 3 have collaborated! Radio 3 help curate the Introducing stage at Latitude each year. Find out more about how Introducing and Radio 3 work together regularly.

What kinda music though?

Well, BBC Radio 3 is predominantly a classical music station; we play a lot of well-known classical pieces and whole concerts as well as music from new and upcoming performers and composers. Many of these come through the BBC Music Introducing Uploader and are featured on our In Tune programme.

Radio 3 also hosts UK national radio’s only world music programme, World on 3, and a variety of jazz programmes. Late Junction and Exposure delve into everything experimental/avant-garde covering genres classed as contemporary classical, folk, electronic, conceptual and everything in between.

Out & about

Many BBC Music Introducing classical artists take part in special outside broadcasts as part of In Tune. This Summer also saw the 123rd BBC Proms take place and BBC Music Introducing artist, cellist Jamal Aliyev, made his Proms debut, celebrating the work of film composer, John Williams at the Royal Albert Hall.

World on 3 curated a stage at this year’s WOMAD for the 18th time, broadcasting live, including a simulcast with Cerys Matthews on 6Music. The stage featured performances from Introducing alumni Don Kipper and Kourelou.

For the second year running Late Junction helped to curate the Introducing stage at Latitude in the summer, putting forward a number of bands the team selected from the uploader, and then giving over a whole show to their sets - these included singer-songwriter Lizabett Russo, improvising trio, Sink, and kora player, Sefo Kanuteh.

Which Radio 3 shows play Introducing artists?

You are most likely to hear a BBC Music Introducing artist on InTune, World on 3, Exposure, Jazz now or Late Junction.

Some recent Radio 3 plays for BBC Introducing artists:

In Tune

‘Cello Sonata in G minor: Andante’ – Rachmaninoff by Cellist, Tessa Seymour

‘Cello Suite No. 2 Saraband’– JS Bach by Cellist, Lydia Dobson

‘Same Same but Different for Saxophone Quartet’ by Composer, Lucy Clare Armstrong

And a live session with baritone, Peter Edge (12th September)

World on 3

‘Mojama’ by Toks Ilorin

‘Malisajo’ by Sefo Kanuteh

Hi there, it's Graeme and Richard here from BBC Music Introducing in Suffolk.

This year's Latitude festival will be the eighth at which we've broadcast from, and in that time we have had the pleasure of taking more than 20 bands from Suffolk with us - the majority of them opening the music showcase on the Lake Stage on each day of the event.

Our picks this year couldn't be more different - Bessie Turner has the most beautiful voice and songs with which to delightfully soothe an audience, while Rad Pitt bring the riffs, the noise, and an all round chaotically brilliant live show.

We're delighted to see that SuperGlu, who we first picked to play Latitude in 2015, have been invited back for the third year running, and OUTLYA will be performing too on the Alcove Stage.

A welcome addition to the festival last year was the BBC Music Introducing Stage. Here you can enjoy live new music in the beautiful surroundings of the Henham Park woods.

The stage returns again this year, hosted by an array of BBC presenters including Max Reinhardt from Late Junction on BBC Radio 3 (supporting world music), Suzy Klein from In Tune (all things Classical) and Tom Ravenscroft on BBC 6Music.

BBC Music Introducing has played a big part in nurturing the careers of some of the biggest acts to have graced Latitude including Ed Sheeran – who had some of his first plays by us on BBC Music Introducing in Suffolk.

Suffolk will have representation here as well following the recent announcement that hip hop producer Piers James has been added to the bill (below), along with hypnotic folk outfit Fishclaw.

Latitude has grown into comfortably the biggest music and arts event in the county and it is such a wonderful festival to be a part of.

If you plan on coming along then come and say hi.

Are you a brilliant Turkish saz player living in London? Or maybe a fine traditional Sufi singer in Birmingham? Perhaps you have a whole new take on folk roots music? You might be famous in your own community, but how do you get heard beyond that?

The answer could be the BBC Introducing Uploader.

Since 2007 BBC Introducing has done a great job of picking up and promoting new talent across the UK, well supported by both BBC local and BBC network stations. But not all music fits into the music policy of the national stations. So this is where World on 3 comes in.

World on 3 is BBC Radio’s only dedicated world music programme – and from 5th January, we will start using the BBC Introducing Uploader to discover your music. So get yourself recorded – it doesn’t have to be studio quality (though that’s always nice!), our ears know when we hear star quality.

The World on 3 team will listen to every submission. If we like what you upload, you could hear it being played on the programme. We might even ask you to come in and play live on air. And who knows, there may be a chance to play on the BBC stage at Womad, the most prestigious world music festival around.

If BBC Introducing had been around in my day this is just the thing that would have given me and my band a chance to be heard across the UK and who knows maybe all over the World!

So, go on, upload your stuff to BBC Introducing and open up your music to a whole new world of possibilities.

Lopa presents World on 3, every Friday night on BBC Radio 3. The show is an eclectic mix of sounds from around the world, with exclusive sessions and concerts by leading musicians in world music. Find out more and listen to the show here.

Discover what BBC Introducing is all about and sign up to the Uploader here.
