Driving back from a meeting in Salford, I had a dilemma. How best to explain the likely repercussions of the Welsh draft budget to the 5live Breakfast audience. I stopped off at the Cardiff newsroom late at night to print off some material. Within minutes, I was reading the first copy on the disappearance of a little girl.

Her name and picture were already being tweeted, but the first official line was this -
"Dyfed Powys Police is appealing for witnesses following an incident in Machynlleth this evening where a five-year-old child has gone missing. Anyone with more information has been asked to contact the police."

By the following morning's Breakfast programme, I wasn't explaining the Welsh Government's fiscal priorities. Instead, I was stood outside a school in Machnylleth, speaking to parents who were dropping off their children before setting out to look for April.

On the Bryn-y-Gog estate, one grandmother told me how all the children there were encouraged to play together on the green spaces. A bike with a pink basket was propped up outside one house - the home of April Jones.

The huge search effort grew by the hour and then by the day. As well as the experts, all of Machynlleth seemed to be taking part, along with people from far and wide - from London, Oldham, Barry. A retired fire-fighter who took part in the 9/11 salvage operation came over from his new home in Ireland to try to help. I saw a group of psychics who wanted to pass on their thoughts to the police.

Market stall-holders packed up early. One explained how he hadn't slept all night, worrying if he was doing the correct thing by coming. Sales dried up in the local sweet shop. Parents felt it didn't seem "right" to treat their children, while one of the town's children was missing.

I interviewed one exhausted search volunteer who said, "Every night my daughter asks me if I've found her. I say, 'No. But maybe someone else has'." He then paused before being able to carry on the interview. And I met another father and daughter. He was spending every day searching the countryside. She, a schoolmate of April, was making pink ribbons in class. She said she was doing so "...for April. And for hope."

That hope was all but extinguished when police confirmed that Mark Bridger had been arrested on suspicion of murder. Yet within a short time, many search volunteers had rallied again, insisting that until anything was certain, they wouldn't give up.

After the first court appearance, came another show of unity. I counted at least 200 lanterns set off from the Bryn-y-Gog estate. The first, released by April's parents Coral and Paul, soared ahead of the rest into the night sky.

Along with my colleagues Ben Bland and Andrew Fletcher, I worked long hours in often appalling weather. The torrential rain played havoc with much of the broadcast equipment, threatening to take us off air.

But our problems were insignificant. We were hopefully passing on useful information. Hundreds of others were out in all weathers searching for a little girl called April. And they still are.

BBC Radio 5 live has a brand new homepage.

We began testing the new look back in June as part of a wider BBC radio online project. Today we’ve launched this project as BBC iPlayer Radio. It sees all BBC radio networks switch to a common look and feel, as well as launch our first BBC radio smartphone app (freely available from the Apple store at launch, other mobile platforms to follow - click here for more information).

While the new site may initially look very different to our former appearance, all the content you were previously able to access is still there – and hopefully easier to discover.

The top navigation allows you to search for 5 live programmes by category, via the schedule or with a search box, as well as links to our sister networks.

The ‘Favourites’ link lets you quickly access clips and programmes you have selected as your favourite if logged in using a BBC ID.

The middle part of the page is comprised of a series of tabs. The first - the landing page - is our live page, letting you listen and watch what’s on air right now. The second and third – Highlights and Latest Clips – provide a selection of our best moments as well as information about future programmes and events. The final tabs let you access clips and programmes based around a particular genre or subject matter: for example, during London 2012 it linked straight through to our Olympics Best Bits collection.

Clear links to our commentaries, downloads, blog and social media accounts are at the bottom of the page, along with the latest news and sport headlines.

This is a major launch for BBC radio, and has been in development for some time. You can read more about BBC iPlayer Radio in a blog post by Mark Friend, Controller of BBC Audio & Music Interactive. Likewise, Andrew Scott, the Head of the Radio & Music Product in BBC Future Media, has written a post on the BBC Internet blog about the technical side of the product.

I really encourage you to let us know what you think about the new look and the new app, and you can do so on the BBC Radio blog.

I look forward to hearing what you think.

- The desktop sites will roll out over of the course of Monday afternoon, and we anticipate the iPhone app will be available to download for free from the App Store by Tuesday morning.

Lying on the floor of an A380 wasn't exactly the way I imagined spending a large proportion of my flight to Singapore, but then sometimes life throws up a few bumps along the way.

I don't really know why I fainted on my way to the Orient but the airline staff who looked after me were amazing. The F1 fraternity who helped me recover were also amazing. A special thank you to Chris Buncombe who was there to see me fall like a tree, apparently, at the back of our plane and had the ominous task of waking producer Jason to tell him there was a little commotion.

The good news is that I'm feeling much better now. Thanks to all those who sent me messages and generally looked out for me. However, I wasn't the only one to have a bumpy weekend as the lights went out and we went racing in the darkness of the Marina Bay Street Circuit.

Bruno Senna just couldn't keep his car on the course and consistently kissed the wall at turn 21. His weekend was a complete write-off and at this time of the year, that is definitely not what you want.

Left then right suspension, a new front wing and a five-place grid penalty for having to replace his gearbox in his final crash in qualifying. After losing KERS on lap 16 and an immense tussle with Felipe Massa, his car slowed and came to a halt on the final lap suffering from a loss of power - a costly weekend.

Michael Schumacher, Mark Webber, Kamui Kobayashi, Sebastian Vettel and Jenson Button all had an appointment in front of the stewards. The wrap sheet was pretty long and us journos were kept waiting for a healthy time as they decided what punishments to dole out.

The biggest offender had to be Schumacher. What caused the seven times world champion to mount the back of Jean-Eric Vergne's car at the end of the safety car period I do not know.

Maybe at 43 his eyes aren't quite what they used to be? Maybe he is more easily distracted than he used to be? Whatever the reason for his shunt with Vergne (which, at T14 was the same corner and the same mistake he made with Perez last year) it was not a good weekend for the German and he will go into the Japan Grand Prix with a ten place grid penalty. Some in the paddock think he got off lightly considering the ban Romain Grosjean received after his crash in Spa.

Mark Webber had another bad weekend, picking up a 20 second race time penalty after his tangle with the Sauber of Kobayashi, which dropped him out of the points.

Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton could well have dropped out of the championship race after his gearbox gave up the ghost as he was 'coasting' to his fourth win of the season. There was nothing he could do as his McLaren became the first retirement of the race. He is now 52 points behind leader Fernando Alonso.

There were some good weekends to be had - Sebastian Vettel got away with his brake test behind the safety car, firstly Button managed not to smash into the back of him, and secondly the stewards decided no punishment should be given to the German.

He was sailing a little close to the wind but a win is a win and his second win of the season is definitely something for him to celebrate. After the race Vettel dedicated his win to the late Sid Watkins - a really nice touch for 'The Prof' who passed away last week.

In 2010, after the Singapore Grand Prix Sebastian Vettel was 21 points off the lead in fourth place, leaving the German with it all to do and still he managed to get his hands on the title. 29 points separate him from leader Alonso and the crown - only a mad man would write him off now.

Which brings us nicely on to Driver of the Day. There are two nominees for this; Felipe Massa and Paul di Resta. Massa was masterful and aggressive and did very well to save both his car and that of Bruno Senna, as he careered under the bridge almost wiping them both out. It was nice to see some fire in the belly of the man from Brazil, but is it too little too late for a seat next year?

Personally though, my driver of the day was di Resta (and his team). They took a car that didn't seem to suit the Singapore track on Friday, stripped it back and began the whole process again. This resulted in a fantastic qualifying for Paul, equaling his best ever grid position of sixth.

After the race he said without the second safety car there was a chance he could have finished on the podium, but fourth is a great step forward, especially ahead of the Mercedes of Nico Rosberg (the Force India car powered by the Merc engine).

Paul clearly has intentions of driving for a championship winning team and he showcased this weekend that he is ready for that step. Whether a seat will be there for him in 2013 is still a doubt, although my hunch is that he will step in the car of Michael Schumacher and stay with Mercedes - the team he won DTM with and the team powering his current car.

Talking about driver movements (as we have to at this time of year) my analogy of the paddock being a little like the back yards of a small market town, tittle-tattle being discussed over fences and while hanging washing up, doesn't seem too far off the mark.

Everyone has an opinion but I don't think the guessing games will have to go on much longer. Maybe only until the middle of this week when the Paris Motor Show takes place. Will this be the day that we finally find out what Lewis Hamilton will be doing for 2013?

For what it's worth, I think he will be staying at McLaren - but what do I know?

Before we head to the first of three back-to-back fly away races my final word has to go to Marussia and Timo Glock. What a fantastic result for them at Singapore - 12th place to many would be a failure but to a new team, like Marussia, Caterham and HRT, it is dreamland - the stuff futures are made of.

So Japan and Korea await us next and maybe a driver announcement or two as well.

Remember you can get in touch on Facebook Jennie Gow-presenter or on twitter @jenniegow.

Finally congratulations to Dave Smithson who correctly predicted the first three across the line in Singapore - the first right answer from three races! A prize will be winging itself to you shortly.

The golden summer might be over, but there is at least one major sporting event to keep everyone glued to their radios. It's the Ryder Cup this week and 5 live will be there every step of the way.

We're at the Medinah Country Club, about 50 minutes west of Chicago for the 39th edition of golf's greatest event and there's a lot to live up to following the remarkable drama of two years ago at Celtic Manor.

From my point of view the work in the first part of the week is twofold. First, looking after all the build-up programmes and features we'll be producing on 5 live Sport and elsewhere. We'll be speaking to all 24 players in the first part of the week, plus the captains and vice captains - that's a lot of interviews!

Our commentary team will be scurrying around the grounds grabbing a few minutes with Rory McIlroy, Lee Westwood and the rest while our engineering team will be making sure we can commentate from all corners of the course come Friday. That's the second major part of work in the first few days.

It is a major technical challenge to be able to broadcast from all parts of a golf course on the other side of the Atlantic but I'm confident all will be fine. After all, we're due some luck; the 2006 Ryder Cup in Ireland was hit by the after effects of Hurricane Gordon, while it was the turn of Hurricane Ike to disrupt the build up to Valhalla in 2008, and biblical rain was the problem in Wales last time around.

However I've looked at the forecast. A lot. As far as I can tell - not being a trained meteorologist - I can't see Hurricane Bubba or any of his friends heading in the direction of the "Windy City" just yet.

On Friday the action finally starts and you'll get shot by shot coverage on 5 live. John Inverdale will present the coverage alongside Iain Carter, Andrew Cotter, John Murray, Alistair Bruce-Ball and Conor McNamara. I'm delighted we'll once again be joined by a man steeped in Ryder Cup history, Bernard Gallacher, plus Andrew Coltart, who went toe to toe with Tiger Woods in the infamous Brookline event.

We're also very pleased to welcome multiple European Tour winner Simon Dyson to our team for the first time, plus our regular US voice for the Ryder Cup, PGA tour player Andrew Magee. Also joining us is former women's British Open Champion Karen Stupples, who played for Europe in their victorious Solheim Cup side last year.

I hope you enjoy the commentary. Long before I produced it I was sitting listening on dark autumnal evenings, captivated by the drama of a sporting event from a far-away land; I'll always remember Alan Green using Seve Ballesteros as his analyst as the 1995 Ryder Cup reached its climax.

I recollect a fantastic former commentator called George Bailey who not only implored "come on Bernard" as Langer stood over the crucial putt in 1997, he then added "we've done it!" for good measure when the match was won. I can hear Ron Jones describing the American's "tumbling onto the green" when Justin Leonard holed that ridiculous putt at Brookline, and the excitement and enthusiasm of Tony Adamson as Paul McGinley won the Ryder cup back for Europe at the Belfry in 2002.

The Ryder Cup will always produce these moments. We've had just as many in the last four events which I've had the privilege of being involved in. I wonder what the defining moment of this week will be? Whatever it is, I hope you get the chance to listen to it on 5 live.

There have been many times this season when the excitement of my job catches up with me and I become like a fractious child the night before Christmas - this is one of those times.

Thirteen races into the Formula One season and we are into the final, fast paced, climax of the year. Seven races in 9 weeks and the second fly-away part of the season starts in the Far East - in Singapore.

This is a race I have watched with fascination since it's inception in 2008. The fastest cars in the world, whizzing around a 5km street circuit lit by over 1,500 lights with a back-drop movie makers would pay millions for - this is the theatre of dreams and I am about to step into it!

Not only is this race set to be a mouth-watering affair but also the sideshow that accompanies the journey is spectacular. This is the race where everyone stays in European time despite being thousands of miles from home. Where going to bed at 4am isn't the sole privilege of the rich and famous, partying into the small hours, but of the masses that wake when the sun is going down and who play hard (on circuit) in the middle of the night.

So how does one prepare for such a Grand Prix after the likes of Italy and Belgium? With a lot of hard work.

Singapore is physically and mentally one of the toughest races of the season for the drivers. I remember asking our BBC radio 5 Live F1 pundit and former Toro Rosso driver; Jaime Alguersuari the first time we were in a car together travelling to a circuit - which is the toughest race of the year? There was no hesitation as he said it was easily Singapore.

The stifling heat of 30 degrees centigrade, the grueling two hours spent in the car, the 70% humidity and constant threat of torrential rain (not to mention the bright lights and lack of run off area) means that a lot of Formula One drivers finish the race drained, if not completely exhausted.

I remember Jaime telling me he stepped from the car and all he could see was white - his vision had completely gone. This is one seriously fit 21 year old we are talking about as well. This weekend will be a test for each of the 24 drivers and those who are scared of the dark will be punished!

So what are people saying as we go into the 14th race of the season?

Sebastian Vettel: "Singapore is one of the highlights on the calendar, because the atmosphere of a night race is amazing. I also like it because the track is really great to race on - which is partly to do with the fact that we race anticlockwise there."

Nico Rosberg: "I finished second in the race here in 2008 which was a great experience and has given me some really nice memories of this event. It's always seems strange to be driving at night, going to bed at 5am and then waking up in the afternoon but it's surprising how easy it is to adapt."

Romain Grosjean: "Since Hockenheim
I haven't really had the same connection with the car as I had previously. At the start of the season I felt very comfortable and by the time we got to Valencia the sensation I had in the car was just amazing. Whether it's the tyres, the setup or something in my driving style I'm not 100% sure; we need to go through everything and find out."

Jenson Button: "We have strong pace on a range of very different circuits - and, hopefully, we can continue to push that momentum in Singapore next weekend. You need good end-of-straight speed for overtaking into Turn Seven. That's the best opportunity for passing as it also comes at the end of the DRS zone."

Martin Whitmarsh: "It's a showcase event for our sport. And it's a race that perfectly symbolises modern Formula 1: it's a brave departure from tradition that boldly works. It manages to retain all the traditional elements that makes a grand prix so magical, but the fusion of its oriental setting, glittering skyline and demanding high-speed course make it feel more like you're watching a Hollywood movie than an international sport. And that's fantastic."

Regardless what everyone is saying; the facts are clear for all to see. Fernando Alonso is leading the Championship by 37 from Lewis Hamilton and with Kimi Raikkonen in 3rd a point behind, and just one point further behind is Sebastian Vettel.

Red Bull, after Vettel's retirement with another Alternator failure and Webber not crossing the finish line, are now just 29 points in front of McLaren in the Constructors championship - with Lotus, then Ferrari still in the hunt.

Thrilling...the end of the 2012 season could be the most amazing we have seen for some time.

However, this weekend will be tinged with a great deal of sadness after the passing of 'The Prof' Sid Watkins - the former FIA medical delegate, and the man responsible for saving more lives in F1 than anyone else, passed away at the age of 84. All those who knew of Sid would have been aware that on the weekend of Ayrton Senna's death he suggested to the World Champion that maybe they should both give up the sport and go fishing instead.

I hope the two of them are looking on from above - enjoying catching up and catching some serious fishes.

F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone had this to say about the man he brought into the sport to improve safety: "I am pretty sure that he [Sid Watkins] is irreplaceable. You only meet somebody of his caliber once in your lifetime."

"What Sid Watkins did in the way of safety in Formula 1 was incredible. He gave his whole life to that cause, to make sure that it could be as safe as it possibly could be. We all owe him a debt of gratitude for his caring and commitment."

Sid was invited to join F1 in the 1978 season as its official Doctor. It was agreed proper medical facilities were needed at the tracks in order to treat drivers immediately and that helicopters should be introduced in order to get them to specialist facilities as soon as possible.

Ecclestone continued: "Sid carried all of those things through, and many more. After the accidents to Jochen Rindt and then Ronnie Peterson, I suggested that he should have a medical intervention car and that he should take responsibility for taking drivers into medical care."

"We always talked things through and worked together, and he then took care of all the medical things which I knew nothing about."

For someone I only met once, Sid Watkins left a lasting impression on me - for many in the paddock he has done much more - all are eternally grateful and at this point I would like to pay my respects to a man that has done so much for the sport I love and the drivers I watch with fascination and admiration. Rest in Peace.

By Gordon Farquhar

A glorious summer of sport has finally drawn to a close. Over the last 6 months, the BBC Olympic Podcasts and blogs have charted the progress of British and international athletes at the London 2012 Games.

Like many people, I was inspired by many of the athletes who competed at the Games but none more so than David Weir. The Londoner won an incredible four wins at four events at London 2012 including the T54 marathon in front of an ecstatic crowd on the Mall, 5,000m, 1500m and 800m. He now matches Sarah Storey as Britain's most successful athlete at the Games. Mark Pougatch spoke to him at the Athletes Parade in London.

It's athletes like Oscar Pistorius, Katherine Grainger and David Weir who will inspire the next generation to Olympic and Paralympic greatness. The importance of mentoring young children in sport was highlighted when BBC World Service’s Simon Watts spoke to Mo Farah, the Somali-born runner, who has become one of the heroes of the London 2012 Olympics after winning Gold in the 5,000 and 10,000 metres for Great Britain.

The London Games certainly wasn’t all about London. Yorkshire was the most successful county at producing Olympians, Wales was the most represented home nation at the Paralympics and Scotland? Well they kindly provided some of the biggest names of the summer in Sir Chris Hoy, Katherine Grainger, Neil Fachie and Andy Murray. Northern Ireland also has a claim to fame as we discovered when Sportsound spoke to gold medal Paralympic sprinters Jason Smyth and Michael McKillop for BBC Ulster.

Despite incredible performances at the London Games, for many athletes this will be the end of their journey. Among those is two-time Olympic gold medallist Victoria Pendleton. She announced her retirement after an emotionally-draining home Games that brought a disqualification in the team sprint, a superb gold in the keirin and a silver medal after defeat to her long-time Australian rival Anna Meares in the sprint. Despite her incredible success, Pendleton spoke about her difficulties dealing with the intense pressure of elite sport, falling in love at work and her personal demons in a very frank interview with Victoria Derbyshire.

US athlete Marlon Shirley, the original blade runner, was the first man to gain the title of "the world's fastest amputee" after he broke the 11 seconds mark for running 100 metres. But Marlon had an exceptionally tough start. His mother was a prostitute leaving him to beg for food on the streets of Las Vegas before he was taken into an orphanage at the age of five. He then lost his foot in accident while in care. He spoke to Lucy Ash on BBC World Service about his extraordinary life and breaking the 11 second mark in the Sydney Games.

Well it seems that everyone in the United Kingdom has been inspired by the London 2012 Games – including Sandi Tosvkig on The News Quiz.

The BBC Olympic Podcast series was presented by BBC 5 Live presenter Eleanor Oldroyd and BBC Olympic Correspondent Gordon Farquhar, and was a Smooth Operations Production.

By 5 live reporter Matt Cole:

Recognition of Stoke Mandeville Hospital's crucial role in the foundation of the Paralympics will be in full focus this evening. The flames lit in the four corners of the UK will come together at the birthplace of the games - the Stoke Mandeville stadium - and be unified into a single Paralympic torch.

What's less well known about the original 1948 games - then known as the International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports (IWAS) World Games - is that patients at Stoke Mandeville were pitted against another care facility, the Royal Star and Garter Home in Richmond Upon Thames, where the father of the games Dr Ludwig Guttman also worked.

Less well known still is that the Royal Star and Garter side won that inaugural contest - an archery competition. The Richmond-based patients also won the rematch just a few weeks later.

Regardless of who won, what is true is that without Dr Ludwig Guttmann there would be no modern Paralympics. Moreover, there'd be many wounded servicemen from WW2 who'd have never survived horrific paralysing injuries.

I met Ron Hill, now 92, but a man who thought he'd be lucky to live three months after shrapnel paralysed him from the chest down on D-Day. He considers himself very lucky to have been taken to Stoke Mandeville Hospital to be treated by Dr Guttmann.

Ron Hill: "It gave you confidence and the will to live"

All these years on Ron now lives and is cared for at the Royal Star and Garter Home in Richmond where his former doctor once also worked. He explained, "He didn't let you stop using your brain. He had you up in a wheelchair as soon as possible."

Reproduced with kind permission from the Royal Star & Garter Home, Richmond

Part of getting patients up and about was sport. Ron explained: "I played darts and snooker. He came and got you to do exercise too. I was quite a good swimmer before I was injured so he got me doing that. It gave you confidence and the will to live. I'm 92 now and have had all these years I didn't expect to live."

Ron left the care at Stoke Mandeville before those inaugural games in 1948, but in the archive at the Royal Star and Garter they still have a newsletter recounted the first competition.

Written by Peter Twiss of the Royal Armoured Corps it begins, "At Stoke Mandeville Hospital on 27th July, two archery teams were locked in fierce but friendly combat, the aim being the highest score, and the prize the Stoke Mandeville Challenge Shield, presented by Dr. L. Guttmann."

Many reports will be written of the games in the coming weeks but that was the first, and of course it's gold medals everyone chases these days. I wonder where that shield is now?

Matt Cole will reporting on the Paralympics for BBC Radio 5 live throughout the week.

They’ve arrived! Over two thousand landed in the UK this week to compete in Paralympic Games and among them was the Canadian wheelchair rugby player David Willsie who showed BBC 5 live's Matt Cole his battle-scarred competition chair. Another competitor who landed at Heathrow was Jan Apel who is part of the first New Zealand sailing crew to compete in the Paralympics for 12 years. She told BBC London's Jason Rosam about her excitement that so many of the tickets had been snapped up.

A number of those in ParalympicsGB are former soldiers who were injured in Afghanistan, Iraq and other conflicts around the world. Their battle injuries dramatically changed their lives but they have rebuilt themselves to become elite sportsmen and women. Sam Bowen was hit by mortar shrapnel that severed an artery in her right leg, leaving her paralysed from the knee down. She revealed her difficulties coping with post-traumatic stress in BBC Radio 1's "Against All Odds". Vernon Kay investigated the role of coaches in the rehabilitation of those injured on the frontline when he spoke to fitness instructor Major Martin Colclough who has worked with both para-cyclist Jon-Allan Butterworth and discus thrower Derek Derenalagi.

We’ve all come to recognise the running blades made famous by Paralympians such as Oscar Pistorius but how do they work? Gareth Mitchell travelled to Germany for the BBC World Service to visit Ottobock, one of the world's leading manufacturers of carbon fibre running blades. Five times stronger than steel, each blade has 80 layers of carbon, each thinner than a human hair. These running blades have revolutionised sprinting for disabled athletes such as the German 100m sprinter Heinrich Popow who explained how he used the blades during races.

A record number of 38 Welsh sportsmen and women will compete at the Paralympics. Among them are table tennis players Sara Head and Rob Davies who spoke to Nellie Bird for BBC Good Morning Wales.

This week Olympic champion Andy Murray has been seeded third for the US Open as he continues to chase his first Grand Slam title. Another British athlete who will have to deal with the pressure at the Games is wheelchair tennis player Lucy Shuker but she told BBC Surrey that she is confident she can do well at the Paralympics in both the singles competition and in the doubles with Jordanne Whiley.

Finally this week, the flames of the Paralympic torch were lit on top of the UK's four highest mountains - Scafell Pike, England's highest peak, Slieve Donard in Northern Ireland, Snowdon in Wales and Ben Nevis in Scotland. Four groups of Scouts trekked up mountains before striking sparks to make the flames which were then placed in a miner's lanterns and brought back down on foot. Mark Simpson was the BBC Ulster correspondent at the base of the mountain and he told Good Morning Ulster’s Sarah Brett and Joel Taggart why his role was so important...but I’m not sure getting the tea on counts!

The next BBC Olympic 2012 Podcast will be presented by Eleanor Oldroyd on Tuesday 28th August.

With less than a week to go until the start of the Paralympics the excitement and expectation is palpable.

But for everyone at BBC Radio 5 live, the start of the Paralympics, will be the result of over two years of meticulous planning to ensure that 5 live and 5 live sports extra capture all the key commentary moments and drama of the Games.

I'm proud of our line-up of experts which includes the country's highest profile Paralympian Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, who has chosen to work with us. Before we had even secured the radio rights for this event two years ago, both Tanni and four times Gold medal-winning swimmer Marc Woods, pledged to be part of our team
And we are adding new names to our team who will be based at the Olympic Park.

This group, all medal-winning Paralympians in their own right, will add their own insight and experience to the already rich mix of comment and reporting that you will hear throughout the competition.

It gives us a team with great expertise and gravitas. There's cyclist Mark Bristow, a double Gold winner in Beijing in the 1km Time Trial and Team Sprint; Alan Ash, who competed in the Paralympics in Atlanta , Sydney, Athens and Beijing in wheelchair rugby and Caroline Matthews, our wheelchair basketball pundit who will be joined by Joe Jayaratne who represented Great Britain in Wheelchair Basketball at three Paralympics and won Silver in Atlanta in 1996.

Kate Grey also joins our line-up. She competed in Beijing and was a Silver medallist at the 2006 and 2009 IPC Swimming World Championships and trained at Bath University, the centre of so much Paralympics preparation. She will be joined poolside by Olympic medallist Steve Parry.

John Inverdale, a familiar face across BBC TV during the Olympics will be providing coverage throughout Drive and 5 live sport whilst Shelagh Fogarty who has followed the preparations for the Paralympics over the last year, will be presenting her 12-2pm show from Olympic Park. George Riley will also be back in Olympic Park to present all of the breakfast and mid morning sports bulletins from there capturing all the atmosphere from London. Russell Fuller a veteran of four previous Olympics and Paralympics will present our coverage on 5 live sports extra.

Many of the commentators who rightly received a lot of plaudits during the Olympics are also in our team including Mike Costello (athletics) and Simon Brotherton (cycling).

The entire team have powerful personal stories but what unites them is their status in and experience of this elite competition.

I am confident that as a result of this, our coverage of the 2012 Paralympics -set to be the biggest ever will be the most comprehensive and incisive coverage of disability sport ever reported on radio with BBC Radio 5 live providing around 100 hours including 40 hours on BBC 5 live sports extra.

I don't think any of us knew when we started planning this how big the public support of and interest in the Paralympics would be but our job has always been very clear - to capture that the atmosphere, to deliver world class commentary of elite sport and bring it to listeners wherever they are.

And before the Games commence there's another chance to hear a powerful documentary telling the stories behind some of Britain's key Paralympic medal hopes this Sunday (11am). Presenter Russell Fuller has spoken to several competitors, including Stef Reid, a sprinter who lost her foot in a boating accident aged 16 and Tom Agar who broke his back in an accident while at University and now competes in the men's sculls. The programme hears how they became involved in the Paralympics and their aspirations for London 2012.

By 5 live's Matt Cole:

International travel can be fraught with annoyances, not least that tricky moment when you realise your suitcase is identical to someone else’s when they both arrive on the luggage carousel. So spare a thought for the Russian Paralympic team, who not only dressed in matching tracksuits, covered in lurid red swirls, they also had identical kit bags. I passed the team in the luggage hall of Heathrow’s Terminal 3 as the gathered around dozens of their bags. My Russian’s non-existent, but you didn’t have to speak a word to realise more than one athlete was asking: “er… which ones mine?”

On the whole though London’s host airport for the Paralympics seems to be coping well, despite today helping some 500 wheelchair users though the terminals – that’s the kind of number who normally pass by in a month.

Athletes, their equipment, and their support teams all seem to arrive safe and sound, aided by an additional 200 staff.

A few short breaths were drawn when Canadian David Willsie, collected his competition wheel chair. “Hey,” he said, “I think someone’s dented this!”

Mercifully he was joking. At 44 he’s the oldest member of Canada’s wheelchair rugby team, and each and every dint and scratch is a battle scar from tournaments of which he’s rightly proud. It’s a brutal sport which takes no prisoners. Amongst the athletes luggage was a bag of spare wheels, which might be very much needed given the violent clashes and collisions the game throws up.

David broke his neck playing ice hockey, but says he just didn’t learn his lesson so took up another sport in which he takes a battering.

Canada has won medals in wheelchair rugby in Athens and Beijing, but never a gold. Patting his padded, taped up rugby chair, David said “It’s been though a couple of battles but it’s got one big one left in it so we’re going to give it everything we’ve got for this one.”

But in all, behind the scenes Heathrow seems to be coping. With 2100 Paralympic family members passing through on Wednesday alone, no major problems were reported. Now if only it can stay like that for the rest of us next time we head off on our holidays.

This year’s Paralympic Games will be the biggest ever, featuring over 4,000 athletes from 160 countries who will compete in 20 sports. What an extraordinary achievement for a movement that started in Buckinghamshire; the idea for a parallel games for disabled people was born at the Stoke Mandeville Hospital, were Dr Ludwig Guttman, a German Jewish refugee encouraged paralysed servicemen to use sport as part of their rehabilitation. In “Sunday” on BBC Radio 4, Dr Guttman’s daughter, Eva Loeffler spoke about her father’s pioneering work and what he would have made of the London Games.

Over 60 years later, thousands of athletes are busy preparing for the Paralympics. Amongst them is Libby Clegg, the blind reigning world champion of the 100m and 200m sprints, who will be going for gold at this summer’s Paralympic Games. BBC 5 Live’s Shelagh Fogarty was joined by Paralympic swimmer Mark Woods to talk to Libby Clegg about the pressures of a home crowd and the complex sprinting rules for the visually impaired.

These London Games look set to receive extraordinary coverage - Channel 4 will provide more than 150 hours of coverage while BBC Radio 5 Live and Radio 5 Live Sports Extra will offer comprehensive radio coverage. But some argue that there's one thing which has always hampered the Paralympic Games from truly taking off - the complex and arcane classification categories. They baffle sports journalists, confuse the public at large and often frustrate would be competitors as Ian Macrae discovered for "In Touch" when he spoke to para-dressage rider Nicola Naylor and Baroness Tanni Gray-Thompson.

Well it isn’t just the physical classification of Paralympians that have caused consternation but also the classification of those with intellectual disabilities. At the Sydney Games in 2000, Spain fielded a basketball team who pretended to have learning disabilities and then won the gold medal. When the scandal was uncovered, all athletes with genuine learning disabilities were excluded from future Paralympic Games while the rules were tightened. For the London Paralympics this summer, the exclusion order has finally been lifted. Claudia Hammond investigated the issue for BBC World Service’s “Inside the Paralympics” and heard from Swedish shot putter Jeffrey Ige who has waited years to become a Paralympian.

While the world prepares for the Paralympics, the Olympians are coming to terms with life after the Games including long jump champion Greg Rutherford who spoke to Luke Ashmead for BBC Three Counties about his new hectic life and his plans to become a double Olympian champion in Rio 2016.

When Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt successfully defended his 100m and 200m titles at this year’s Olympics, he declared himself “a living legend," and the across the world fans cheered him on...with the exception of one Welsh comedian - Rhod Gilbert who shared his views with comedian Reginald D Hunter and Richard Bacon at the Edinburgh Festival.

Eleanor Oldroyd is back next Tuesday. The next BBC Olympic 2012 Podcast will be presented by BBC Olympics Correspondent Gordon Farquhar on Friday 24th August.

One of the things we try to do at 5 live is to get out and about as much as possible - to big events like the Olympics and Paralympics, to the scene of major news stories and sporting events but also to places where we can do some surprising and different programmes and meet our listeners. That's why we will be heading to Sheffield from 11 to 13 October for Octoberfest 2012 - a free three-day festival, featuring what should be an exciting programme of live broadcasts and events across the city.

In partnership with BBC Radio Sheffield and other BBC parts of the BBC including CBeebies, Radio 3 and 6 Music, we'll be offering an eclectic mix of news and sport programming, audience debates and interactive activities.

Some of the our biggest names including Nicky Campbell, Shelagh Fogarty, Simon Mayo and Mark Kermode, Stephen Nolan, Robbie Savage and Colin Murray will be on hand to lead the discussions and to get involved with the action.

One highlight of the festival will be '5 live Aside', which will see the station attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the most amount of players in a 5-a-side exhibition football match during a 24-hour period. We will be hoping to beat the current record, which stands at 441, with proceeds from the challenge going to BBC Children In Need. The world record attempt will take place from 2pm Friday 12 October to 2pm Saturday 13 October and will be completed under the watchful eye of a Guinness World Records adjudicator, who will be on hand to verify the team's success.

Also confirmed in the schedule are a live audience broadcast of Fighting Talk hosted by Colin Murray; 606 with Robbie Savage and Jason Roberts leading the nation's biggest football phone-in; Simon Mayo and Mark Kermode's Film Review; and Al Murray presenting 7 Day Sunday.

This is the third time we've taken 5 live on the road in this way and it's our most ambitious festival yet. We've chosen Sheffield because of the range of programme possibilities it offers for both news and sport and because it's a place where we think we can do a lot more to spread the message of what 5 live offers.

So as well as what we do on-air, anyone who can get to Sheffield will be able to come along to the 5 live activity 'Igloo', which will be located in Tudor Square and will feature a whole host of activities for visitors of all ages to enjoy. With the help of local media students, the igloo will give you the chance to try your hand at being a radio presenter, football commentator or TV weather presenter. In collaboration with Sheffield Hallam University, visitors can also test their own sporting potential; it'll be a great chance to find out whether you have the potential to be an Olympic Gold Medallist or perhaps just to find out if you have the natural ability to join your local running club.

We'll be giving more details about Octoberfest 2012 nearer the time along with information about how to apply for the free ticketed events. In the meantime, you can join the conversation on Twitter using #Octoberfest via @bbc5live.

By Spoony:

It was the opportunity to sit and speak with one of the finest football managers ever. Have I over stated that? I don't think I have. League titles in four countries. In three of the four he has won the league twice, and in the fourth he is still the manager so who knows? One thing for certain, he IS a special one.

I was about to meet somebody I'd watched in many press conferences, almost baiting the media, playing with them, toying with them like a young cat would a ball of wool. Except for José Maria Dos Santos Mourinho Santos it's a science. Everything with Mr Mourinho is a science. Well that's what I thought before meeting him. I was wrong. I have to admit it.

The human side is what really drives him. He cares. It matters. They matter. They? The players. The fans.

"I feel the fans as part of myself, I create internal links with fans," he told me. I'd seen him throw his medals and a blazer into the crowd before but I wasn't aware his respect for them went this far.

I wondered if there would be areas he'd be cagey about addressing. His relationship with Abramovich? Returning to England to manage? And the million dollar question (although I suspect it would be MUCH more than that): would you manage Chelsea again? I was spoilt because he was forthcoming with all three. Although I'm sure there would've been a few crossed words between Roman and himself at some point.

He was and is charming. He is intelligent. An authority on football and without reservation, a formidable adversary. If you should ever find yourself on the other side of the battlefield to him make sure you prepare for every eventuality. He will.

By Non League Show presenter Caroline Barker:

I feel like I'm about to give birth to triplets. In truth the emergence to the world of Dave Anderson, Alan Alger and Dave Watters will hopefully be without the need for gas and air.

The three stooges are a mainstay of the new 5 live Non League Football Show, and have been with me on the journey for the past five or so years.

This weekend, as we make our 5 live debut, they'll also be at my side mopping my brow and with hot towels aplenty. When we kick-off with the lines "for the fans, by the fans" this weekend we won’t be lying.

I love Non League Football and have supported Chelmsford City ever since I could holler the word "Clarets". A stint as CEO at the club and helping out at others drags you even further in; I'm hooked and Dave Anderson, or Angry to his friends, is equally so. He holds the world record for managing a side unbeaten when at AFC Wimbledon and he's now plying his trade as the gaffer at Harrow Borough in the Isthmian League.

Dave Watters (I won’t tell you his unforgivable nickname) is a long-time sports journalist, once editor at the Non League Paper, and he now helps a number of leagues with their media. Then there's Alan, PR man for the Conference sponsors Blue Square. But he's not just a corporate face - he lives and breathes the game at our level and promotes it any moment he can.

We all love Non League. Over the coming months I hope just a bit of that affection will rub off and we're hoping to engage audiences like never before.

Social media, and in particular Twitter, have become the lifeblood of communication in Non League and we want to take advantage of that. You can find us on Twitter and Facebook and as well as tweeting the show, people can also send us their news from their club via audio messages from their smartphones by emailing nonleague@bbc.co.uk.

Whatever the level, whatever the club, we want to give a voice to what is the foundation of football in our country. Here's hoping you all join in.

The first Non League Show of the season is on at 5.30am on Sunday 19th August on BBC Radio 5 live, and from every Sunday thereafter. You can catch up for 7 days via the BBC iPlayer.

For more clips, photos and blogs visit the Non League Show homepage, and you can also subscribe the Non League show free download.
