Equiano Exhibition

By Mandisa Gordon
School children create an exhibition on Olaudah Equiano. Find out how you can get it your school, library or community centre.

Pupils aged five to eleven at Park Hill Primary School in Moseley put together an exhibition to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade.

The displays show examples of children’s work on Equiano, an enslaved African who eventually bought his freedom. He was a crucial part of the abolition movement and visited Birmingham in 1789.

It is hoped that this exhibition will inspire other schools to create their own work on the ending of the slave trade and encourage them to visit the Olaudah Equiano exhibition at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery in September.

Cleone Foods, a Hockley-based company who produce Island Delights Caribbean patties, are supporting this project. The exhibition is available for schools, libraries and community centres to book from March 2007.
