Burglars are usually at their most active in the run-up to Christmas |
Police are warning burglars in Kent not to "play chess with their liberty". A special two-month campaign to reduce house burglaries and other related thefts has already seen 419 people arrested by officers since 1 November.
Of those detained as part of Operation Castle, which runs until New Year's Eve, 183 have been charged and 47 have appeared in court.
"I can say it in one word - checkmate," said Ch Supt Gary Beautridge, from Kent Police, in a message to burglars.
"We will not let thieves get away with preying on the festive goodwill of residents in Kent. "Burglars need to know we are targeting them. If that's their game, we'll get their name."
The campaign aims to protect householders at a time of year when burglars are generally at their most active.
It follows a similar operation earlier in the year.
Timer switches
Officers from Kent Police are using covert investigation methods, increasing patrols in areas that burglars operate, and encouraging residents to take action to prevent robberies.
Householders are being urged to ensure doors and windows are kept closed and properly secured, and to use timers on lights when they are out.
They are also being asked to keep valuables out of sight and to be aware of advertising new items by leaving empty boxes outside.
