Primary losing battle to survive
School close protest
Parents and pupils demonstrated against the closure plan
Plans to shut a primary school in Torquay are to continue going ahead, Torbay Council said.

Upton St James Primary School is earmarked for closure because pupil numbers in Torbay are expected to fall by 1,000 over the next five years.

There has been concern over the way the council consulted over the closure, but those fears have been overruled.

Upton is considered to be a good school, but its buildings are in a poor state of repair.

On the day the council recommended its closure in May, a large demonstration took place outside to show support for the school.
