Transpennine train services returned to normal on Monday

Routes from Cleethorpes to Doncaster, Hull to Manchester Airport, Leeds to Manchester, Newcastle to York and Middlesbrough to York were affected.

Transpennine Express said that while running the reduced timetable it had worked to improve train reliability.

It had also secured a deal with unions to allow drivers to work on rest days.

Maintenance boost

Transpennine Express managing director Vernon Barker said: "The decision to run a reduced service from 1 November was not taken lightly and we are sorry for the inconvenience that our passengers have experienced."

The company said it had worked with maintenance depots to improve train reliability and increase the availability of rolling stock.

"We are committed to reducing the number of delayed and cancelled trains and will be working hard to make further improvement," said Mr Barker.

The service reductions were also introduced after drivers' union Aslef withdrew its support for rest day working as the company attempted to introduce new working patterns.
